REACH HIGH - STRIVE FOR KNOWLEDGE - LIVE WITH ALL YOUR HEART

Kia ora koutou te whanau Dear Parents and Caregivers, I hope you managed to have some enjoyable family time with your children over the holiday break and that your children are refreshed and ready for a busy and exciting Term 3.

At the end of last term I was fortunate to be able to support our Rippa Rugby Team who competed in the regional finals in Havelock. Four schools were involved – Richmond, Springlands, Renwick and Henley. Our team was coached by Aaron Honey and Cade Armstrong and was unbeaten on the day winning the final against arch rivals Richmond by 8-6. The team now have an all-expenses paid trip to the national finals in Wellington in early September!! A fantastic result to beat a strong Richmond team who have won it for the last 4 years and well done to all the team and coaches. It was clear from watching the games that Henley played as a team and utilised all members in the squad – the rotation policy used by the coach Aaron Honey did not seem to affect their performance as it did the All Blacks a few years ago. There is a photo later in the newsletter. A warm welcome to the following new students; Talei Kinzett (Rm 17), Emma Baken (Rm 19), Kaylee Douglas (Rm 4), Samantha Douglas (Rm 4), Sami Geddes (Rm 12), Natalie McCall (Rm 14), Jake Roderique (Rm 17), Jamison Shutkowski (Rm 17), Isabelle Thirkettle (Rm 3), Zayla Squires-Gordon (Rm 20), Tayla Doyle (Rm 17), Katlyn Doyle (Rm 11), Ella Singh (Rm 19a), Emi Rodley (Rm 9), Ben Elliot (Rm 19) and Hayley Palmer (Rm 19).

We also welcome Mrs Donna Elkington as teacher in Room 18 for Term 3 while Mrs Shearer is on her sabbatical. We are currently hosting two student teachers from the University of Canterbury – Chloe Harris in Room 4 and Erin Beamish in Room 13.

Welcome also to Police Education Officer, Constable Evan Garland, who will be working in the school for the next few weeks covering the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme. Thank you to those parents who attended the information evening last week and to the

Health Team led by Mrs Mercer-Hall who organised the event. We were also supported by Child Youth and Family, a Detective from the Police Child Abuse team and Public Health. For those who were unable to make the evening there is a wealth of information about the Keeping Ourselves Programme on the Police website http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community- advice/school -portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping Also at the evening I spoke about the cybersafety aspects and the controls we have in place in school surrounding internet safety. The Netsafe website http://www.netsafe.org.nz/ is highly recommended to parents as it has many practical tips about filtering and monitoring access for children to the web in the home environment. At the conclusion of the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme, our health team will be seeking feedback via an online survey as part of our Health Consultation. This week we welcome students from Tai Hang Tung Shiaolin Rugby Club in Hong Kong. The 11 students are billeted out and will experience life with a Henley School family as well as taking part in our school for the week. A game against our champion Rippa Rugby team is also a highlight for them. This experience also gives our students valuable exposure to children from another country and culture and raises our awareness of Asia. We hope they enjoy their stay in our beautiful region and thanks to those families hosting the students and to Jan Lynch for coordinating with the Tai Hang Tung Shiaolin Rugby Club. Thank you to those parents who attended the parent teacher interviews at the end of last term – one of the CONFIRMATION OF UPCOMING DATES most significant factors in student achievement is the Week 2 Middle Syndicate daily SwimMagic programme involvement of the parent in the education of their Week 2 Tai Hang Shiaolin Rugby Club visit child. Henley School welcomes our visitors from the Tai Hang Tung Shiaolin

Rugby Club in Hong Kong

Henley wins Rippa Regionals!

On 2nd July, the Henley Rippa team journeyed to Havelock to contest the Trophy along with Richmond, Renwick and Springlands Primary Schools.

The ground conditions were a bit boggy and the wind had the feel of snow in it, but the Henley kids got straight into their work in their first game against Renwick. Under the watchful eye of coach Aaron Honey, they defended well and scored some great tries to win 7-4. Next up was the old nemesis, Richmond School, who had beaten us in the final of the Nelson Bays tournament. This time however, Henley retained possession on attack and created turnovers on defence, eventually winning a nailbiter 6-5. That was Richmond’s first defeat in Rippa since 2010!

The final game against Springlands would decide who went to the final – Springlands needed to win but it was Henley who made all the play, easily taking the match 11-5.

Onto the final and who else but Richmond School. Could they be beaten twice in one day? Yes they could. Henley controlled the match from the start, racing out to a three-try lead, which they maintained almost till the end. Final score 9-7 to Henley. Special thanks must go to Aaron Honey who has coached them to this win. Thanks also to the parents and supporters who came over to Havelock for the day – it was worth it wasn’t it?

Your winning team is: Alex Honey, Luke Brown, Macy Kappely, Aimee Lynch, Dylan Restall, Dylan Irvine, Hayley Gardner, Coby Springer, Rosie Mirfin and Brooklyn Collett. The team is now entered to represent Tasman in Wellington at the National Champs, in term 3. Exciting!

Congratulations team, Mr A.

MEMO FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Welcome back to Term 3. The board continues to meet monthly to oversee the governance of the school and I am pleased to report that Henley is in great shape. At our last meeting we received an informative report from Finn Deeley on the Literacy initiatives within the school and how we are tracking against our annual targets. On the financial front The Ministry of Education confirmed receipt of our Annual Audited Accounts for 2013. It was noted by the auditors the high standard of financial records kept by the school and the board would like to acknowledge John and Tracey for the outstanding job they do on this front. In July, three board members went to the NZSTA conference in Auckland to better understand the role of Governance and how we can help improve student outcomes. It was a busy couple of days with lots of knowledge gained which we will bring back and share with the rest of the board. We wish you well for what promises to be another busy term. Gus Shirley

Year 5/6 Hockey Tournament report by

Kate Sturm and Samantha Harman Year 5/6 Hockey Tournament report by Kate Sturm and Samantha Harman

On Monday the 23rd of June, Henley School sent

some hockey teams along to a Year 5/6 competitive and social tournament at the Saxton Fields Turf. Miss Chippendale was the coach of our team, the Henley Hurricanes. We were in the competitive draw and we all play hockey outside of school. We arrived at the Hockey turf at 9.20am. Firstly, all the participating teams had their photo taken by the organiser, Craig. Then 5 minutes later the hooter went and the first games began. We played one of the teams first and won that 7-nil. We won the game after that and then came up against the previous trophy winners, and that finished in a draw. We had to win our last game by 5 goals to knock Brightwater out and we won that game 5-nil. So this meant we had made the final against Ranzau. We won the finals 3-nil. YAY! Another trophy for the Henley trophy cabinet. This day was the greatest day of Hockey ever. We had such a fun day and worked really well as a team to enjoy the tournament.
