By William Goodman 5.29.08 6:55 PM The Stills After teasing us with a promising set at this past fall's Pop Montreal festival, Canadian quintet the Stills have finally revealed their much-anticipated third record: Oceans Will Rise, the follow-up to 2006's sophomore set Without Feathers, will flood North America Aug. 19 via the band's new label home, Arts&Crafts. According to vocalist Tim Fletcher, the group felt "a raw energy of inspiration" during the new album's recording efforts that was absent in previous sessions; whether or not it was powerful enough to generate the kind of fire seen in the "Snake-Charming the Masses" music video is yet unconfirmed. Sure, it may have you feeling life is looking pretty grim as you contemplate how it's high time humanity quit choking itself to death on its wealth of snake oils while it continues to idle at consumption junction, but you just might smile because perhaps it's a sign that the angst- infused post-punk sound of The Stills is back. Following up their acclaimed post-punk 2003 debut Logic Will Break Your Heart with a grand shift to the 2006 heartland-rock effort Without Feathers, many fans felt betrayed. This time it appears from the early Internet release of the tracks “Rooibos/Palm Wine Drunkard”, “Being Here” and the video release “Snake-charming the Masses” that the band has returned to a much-loved angrier sound. PITCH Going home was never an option for single mother Lena Mahikan (Cara Gee). But when her 13-year-old, Peeka (Shay Eyre) overdoses in the streets of Toronto, she is forced to return home to her estranged mother and face a life-long legacy of shame and resentment. Empire of Dirt is a story about second chances and summoning the power of family to soothe the pain of cyclical damage. SHORT SYNOPSIS As in many Native families, Lena Mahikan (Cara Gee) grew up in the cycle of abuse. Her father, a residential school survivor, was an alcoholic until he killed himself when Lena was 10. Her mother, only 14 years her senior, turned to the slots and was consumed. By the time Lena was 15, she was pregnant and, before giving birth, was kicked to the curb by her mom. For 13 years Lena has been living, poverty stricken in Toronto, struggling to make ends meet, being chased by her own demons.

  • 2009 Polaris Music Prize Long List Announced Today
2009 Polaris Music Prize Long List announced today. For Immediate release Toronto, ON (June 15, 2009) The Polaris Music Prize Long List was revealed today by Steve Jordan, Prize Founder and Executive Director. This is the fourth year of the $20,000 Prize which is awarded to the best full-length Canadian album, judged solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre or record sales. This marks the second year Polaris has made the Long List public. The Long List consists of the top 40 full- length Canadian records released from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009, according to an initial vote by the 181 members of the Polaris Music Prize jury. The jury consists of music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada. No music industry personnel with direct financial relationships with artists vote for Polaris. “In just one year the Long List has become another integral tool for the Polaris mission of exposing great records to Canadian music lovers. Certainly this year’s list challenges the notion that quantity and quality are mutually exclusive,” said Jordan. Jordan also announced that the Long List is being presented by the Canada Council for the Arts. The Head of the Council’s Music Section, Russell Kelley, said, "the Polaris Prize is given to the best album of the year based solely on artistic merit. The Canada Council has a long history of funding projects based on artistic merit. This is a good very fit. We are pleased and proud to support this year's Long List." Jordan also announced a contest with Exclaim.ca where fans can offer their predictions on which of the 40 Long List titles will make the Short List.
