Our GoalGoal………… To provide architecture access to our creative resources, materials, and technology, which are utilized in the design, engineering manufacture, and installation of electrical signs. From signage for a 150 foot tall, roadside high-rise to building-sized mural installations, AFX produces sculptural interpretations of graphic art using mass-customization techniques applied to a wide range of metals, plastics, and light sources. Manning Lighting “Busch Stadium” St Louis MO “Wind Palms”-Ned Kahn Here we engineered fabricated shipped and installed 7 kinetic art sculptures for the artist Ned Kahn in San Diego. Located on the bay, these sculptures required high level of attention when it came to the engineering aspect. The sculptures articulate head to wind and the pixels move in a wave motion. “““Wind“Wind LeavesLeaves””””----NedNed Kahn Same game with home field advantage. Our first project with Ned… engineered, fabricated, installed 7 kinetic art sculptures in Milwaukee. Located at the entrance of Discovery World and next door to the Calatrava Milwaukee Art Museum, these sculptures, unlike San Diego are interactive. With a 9in hand wheel, a small child has the power to rotate the entire weather veined head. Once again, required high level of attention when it came to the engineering. The sculptures articulate head to wind and the pixels move in a wave pattern motion, giving a visual shape to wind. “““Racine“Racine Art MuseumMuseum””””----Brininstool & Lynch The outside of the building features an exterior clad in translucent acrylic panels. The panels are an interesting architectural point of interest and create an aesthetic “exoskeleton” for the building. The acrylic facade is lighted from dusk until 10 p.m. AFX provided the structural design of the supporting truss system as well as custom connection methods, manufacturing and installation. Working hand in hand with Brad Lynch to achieve his vision with practical solutions. Product testing was also part of this project to gain the faith of the acrylic manufacturer and get the warranty of the product extended when used in this custom application. We have since worked with Cyro Degussa in several custom projects designing installation methods…Waukesha Public Library being one. “““Waukesha“Waukesha Public Library ExpansionExpansion””””----Waukesha,Waukesha, WI AFX Designed, fabricated and installed the acrylic curtain wall system. Engineered custom spring loaded brackets to support panel loads. We also designed custom panel closure caps to allow for venting of multi walled panels. Unlike past acrylic panel projects, these panel are hang vertical, adding some additional challenges to the engineering. "I had a design and fabrication challenge that needed outside perspective and I typically look for such guidance from colleagues. On the "taxonomy" project, AFX and Adam Brown stepped in as a creative partner in every stage of the design process. His commitment in supporting the artist's vision helps create something that has never been seen before.before.““““ ---Deborah Aschheim

“““Constellations“ConstellationsConstellations””””----DeborahDeborah Aschheim Under construction and design in collaboration with the artist and city. It is scheduled to be installed at the San Jose International Airport. This sculpture is a data-responsive, DMX controlled LED light installation, translating the daily rhythm of the San Jose Airport’s network of activity, and the experience of the individual traveler, into a continuously evolving, interactive "drawing in space." The sculptural network visualizes connections between San Jose and its destination cities as glowing orbs linked by luminous lines. Thermal formed Polyethylene tubes and rotary molded spheres along with aluminum fabricated icosahedrons and miles of RGB LED’s are the main elements Johnsen Schmaling Architects design- “Blatz Condominiums and House Offices”- Milwaukee, WI Hired to design, build and install 4 rotating door or space dividers, fabricated using Blatz beer bottles. #1 challenge was to not encapsulate the bottles. Customer wanted to touch and feel the bottles and have a way to change them if/when they break. They had single pivot 360deg. rotation, weighing in at approximately 1500# per door. “““NY“NY Street Light PolePole””””Skidmore Owings Merrill design-Top three finalist of a competition for redoing the street lighting for the city of NY. AFX was hired to build the prototype for SOM’s final Judging. Design took 2nd Place out of the 300 entries. Complexity…Arced, torqued, and tapered aluminum pole structure. Epoxy fairing compound and long board finishing. “““I“I now go to AFX Sign Effectz for almost all of my public art fabrication and installation. They bring engineering skills, creativity, and superb craftsmanship to every project. They work closely with me on all aspects of fabrication, and they make it fit within the budget and the time frame. Above all, they have integrity and commitment to solving problems in order to reach our goals.goals.”””” ---Janet-Janet Zweig

“““Maplewood“MaplewoodMaplewood””””----JanetJanet Zweig Two 28 foot long words constructed from parts of two houses that were demolished in Maplewood in 2006. Fiberglass layup processes, along with vacuum bagging techniques were used in the manufacturing of the substructure. Again LED lighting was used to create the “halo” glow around the letter. Additionally, some extensive engineering went on behind the scenes in regards to the attachment methods used. Primarily due to the fact of the letters location of install…a highly used Metro Rail overpass. This location drew concern from most of the city engineers. The eye raisers were all resolved using a collaborative effort with the city and the artist. “““Busch“Busch StadiumStadium””””Manning Lighting Manning Lighting hires AFX on an ongoing basis to provide design and fabrication services for their larger fixtures. Here is one of the projects consisting of fixtures with rotary molded baseballs, water jet cut logos and fabricated support structures. We at AFX want to thank you for taking the time and interest in our company’s capabilities. We look forward to developing a great working relationship with you in the near future.
