STUDENT RECORDS (OSRs)

Reference: Min. of Education. The Ontario Student Record (OSR). 2000.

TRANSFER OF OSRs

Principals must NOT send any OSRs to another school or board in Ontario without a written and signed request form (signature of receiving principal/ vice principal or guidance head, in the case of secondary schools) Appendix H

Elementary schools must not forward any OSRs to secondary schools in June.

Secondary schools must not request OSRs until the students are present and enrolled after September 5th.

Before an OSR is transferred to the receiving school, the principal should review the contents to ensure that only that which is “conducive to the improvement of the student’s instruction” is left in the OSR.

This means removing notes for absences and tardiness; doctor’s notes; booklets produced in kindergarten etc. Report cards and special services files remain in the folder. Check that admit and demit dates for each year, the name of the school, signature of the teacher etc. are completed on the OSR folder before it leaves custody of the elementary school. Our former students depend on our accuracy in later years – admission to English schools in Quebec etc.

NOTE: The “Record of Accumulated Instruction in French As a Second Language” card must remain in the OSR throughout elementary and secondary school and must be forwarded inside the purged OSRs sent to the Archives and Records Management Department for microfilming and permanent retention.

The most secure method for transferring all OSR Folders is by Purolator Courier. This applies to both internal and external OSR transfers,

TCDSB schools may use internal courier service for transfer of records within the Board using approved Ministry of Education mailing envelopes. However, this method leaves no written record or proof of the transaction. Purolator Courier provides documentation so that these transfers can be monitored and OSR records retrieved if lost in transit.

Principals are invited to discuss any questions they may still have with: Shaaron Grogan-Sheahan Assistant Superintendent of Education, Corporate Services 416-222-8282, ext. 2162 [email protected]

NO EARLY DISMISSAL PRIOR TO SUMMER VACATION

There will be no early dismissal of students on the last day of school prior to the summer vacation.

The Toronto Catholic District School Board has completely harmonized School bus transportation services with the Toronto District School Board. This has resulted in significant savings for the TCDSB, but has taken away some of the flexibility we previously enjoyed.

The practice of early dismissal on the last of school before summer vacation and Christmas holidays is a practice of the TCDSB, which is not implemented by the TDSB. The TDSB will not be adopting this practice. Therefore, there will be no early dismissal on the Friday before Christmas or the last day of school in June.

What's the meaning of 'home'? A writing contest for grade 4, 5 & 6 students

From October 6 to November 14, 2008, students in grades 4, 5 and 6 can enter the Meaning of Home writing contest in support of Habitat for Humanity.

By entering, students have the chance to make a difference in their community – the winner will be part of the ultimate gift: A $60,000 contribution towards the building of a Habitat home in or near the winner’s community.

Teachers can incorporate the writing contest into their classroom activities and assignments. As you know, one of the key elements of language learning is to interact and connect with individuals. Here’s how the writing contest helps teachers meet some core requirements: • The writing contest provides students with the opportunity to produce an original piece of work that reflects their capacity for independent critical thought. • The contest is an activity that students will see as meaningful; one that challenges them to think creatively about a topic that directly impacts their lives–the meaning of home–and will ultimately improve their writing skills.

You can download a complete, ready-to-go Education Module – including a lesson plan, activity ideas, writing tips and a Habitat for Humanity fact sheet – and full contest details at www.meaningofhome.ca (French: www.sensdunchezsoi.ca) If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Kaltiainen, Corporate and Public Affairs x 864, Veritas Communications T 416.482.0864 www.veritascanada.com 370 King Street West, Suite 800, Box 46 Toronto, Ontario, M5V 1J9 Main phone number 416.482.2248 Toll free number 1.888.513.8733

Pope Paul School goes green May 29, 2008 LISA RAINFORD www.insidetoronto.com, Bloor West Villager

Instead of looking for shade under the play structure like they did to last summer, students from Pope Paul Catholic School will be able to seek refuge under 17 mature trees that were planted Wednesday around the perimeter of their school. When GreenHere, a not-for-profit community environmental group that works to improve the urban forest in the Davenport neighbourhood, approached the staff and advisory council at Pope Paul about greening the school yard, they thought it was a "fantastic" idea. According to principal George Vincente, Pope Paul had a typical inner yard- barren with a lot of concrete, surrounded by a chain link fence. "GreenHere has been fabulous," said Paula Abelha, co-chair of the Catholic School Parent Advisory Council. "They're incredible, they've done most of the work - 80 per cent. We're very supportive of the work they've been doing." The greening project, which began last year, involved the costly endeavor of removing a portion of the asphalt, a task funded by the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority and made possible by GreenHere. A celebration of the school's playground make-over will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Additional planting of bushes and shrubs will take place during the celebratory event. "We want to plant a vegetable or herb garden for the kids to use," said Abelha. "They'll take care of it. We're going to start a gardening club." The children will not only tend to the garden, but to the watering and mulching needs of the new trees, which were planted by a contractor because at 500 pounds each were far too heavy for the community to plant itself. "In the beginning, the trees require a lot of watering to make sure the roots take," Abelha, a mother of two children - one in JK and another in Grade 3, who both attend Pope Paul, said. "GreenHere came to the school and taught the kids what to do." It's been quite an extensive project, Abelha said. GreenHere secured corporate donors, including FedEx, Tree Canada and Tim Hortons while the school applied for money and received $15,000 from the Toronto Catholic District School Board's Environmental Initiatives Fund. "On Saturday, it's for the community," Abelha said. "We're very, very excited about this. This is a nice treat for us to see that something great is happening. There's so much negativity in the area." Abelha is especially happy about the health benefits that the greenery will provide not just as a parent, but a respiratory therapist. "My daughter, she's had issues with asthma since she was one-year old."

Scarborough soccer squads at OFSAA June 3, 2008 03:37 PM www.insidetoronto.com

Scarborough will be well represented at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial championships in the top quad-A level. The playdowns are being held June 9-11, the boys in Windsor, the girls in Hamilton.

In girls play, Scarborough schools won their respective finals in both the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) playdowns.

Pope John Paul II won its TCDSB city final on Monday 2-0 over North York's St. Basil. Goal scorers were Angela Sullivan and Laura Kimoto.

Birchmount Park won its TDSB city quad-A final last Wednesday 6-0 over North York's .

In boys play, Agincourt lost the TDSB city final 5-1 to East York Collegiate last Wednesday.

But Agincourt earned the TDSB's second berth to OFSAA when it defeated cross-town rival Birchmount Park 2-1 on Monday in a special OFSAA qualifier match.

McLuhan sweeps rugby titles Teams advanced to this week's OFSAA championships June 4, 2008 10:11 AM Norm Nelson City Centre The Mirror – www.insidetoronto.com

Marshal McLuhan Catholic Secondary School was the undisputed power in rugby this year in their local Toronto league, the Toronto District College Athletic Association. The midtown Toronto school, at 1107 Avenue Rd., had both its senior men's and women's rugby teams win their respective playoff championships, with both qualifying for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations provincial championships, which are slated to wrap up Friday, June 6. The senior women's team won 15-0 over Scarborough's Cardinal Newman. "It was much tighter a game than the score looked," said coach Rob Brohman, who spoke to The Mirror Tuesday, June 3, just prior to boarding a bus for OFSAA. "It was only 5-0 at half and then 20 minutes into the second half we scored a second try to go up 10, and then we scored on the last play of the game to go up 15." Brohman also coaches the senior men's team and their game - 17-14 in overtime to North York's Senator O'Connor - was as close as the score indicated. Gordon Verok was an instant hero when he sailed a penalty kick through the uprights to break the 14-14 deadlock. He also converted trys by Simon Burke and Jahmar Speid. The local school came through at the right time as they avenged two previous losses to Senator O'Connor, 28-14 and 17-10. "I think we played better as a team, the guys understood what we were trying to accomplish on defence a lot better. We built for the playoffs - we do that every year," Brohman said. The senior men's team seem to be establishing a strong local reputation in rugby with three Toronto District College Athletic Association titles in the last four years. "But we've never been favourites, the three years we won, all three were upsets," he said. While the Marshall McLuhan team may be gaining a reputation as a giant killer in Toronto, Brohman cautioned not to expect a David versus Goliath outcome at OFSAA, which is being played in Durham Region. In fact, in almost unprecedented candor for a coach, when asked if his team has any chance to pull off the upset at OFSAA, he replied bluntly: "No." For the opening game, he elaborated, "we're playing Brantford who's ranked No. 1 in the province and they're killing everybody ... "I'm not being disrespectful to my team. It's just that team's very good." The expected outcome against Brantford (which went beyond The Mirror's press deadline Thursday), can't take away from the fact that for his team it's been "a great year". "They played with a lot of heart and courage. It was excellent." In the senior women's playdowns in Ottawa, Marshal McLuhan, on paper at least, had a much easier opening matchup, drawing seventh-ranked Philip Pocock. Marshal McLuhan's success at rugby made for a difficult decision for Brohman, given he's head coach for both teams. In the end, he accompanied the senior women's team to Ottawa. With the senior men's team is Jeff Ferguson, "another teacher and an alumni who played for me a few years back."

The Canadian leg of the 2010 qualifier series against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will take place on Friday, June 20, 7:30 p.m., at Stade Saputo in Montréal. De Guzman is not only the first Canadian ever to play in Spain's La Liga, considered by some as the top league in the world, but he was just recently accorded a prestigious honour, being named player of the year for his team, Deportivo la Coruna. Last year was also a good one at the national team level as well, capped with a three goal performance and a tournament MVP at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. A talented family, to state the obvious, de Guzman's younger brother, 20-year-old Jonathan, also plays first division soccer in Europe, for Rotterdam-based Feyenoord. Prior to his stunning entrance as an 18-year-old rookie, Jonathan had played in the club's youth system since he was 12. That, in part, prompted him to apply for his Dutch citizenship, which he very recently acquired, and to indicate that he will suit up for the Netherlands in international competition. He was not chosen by the Dutch for Euro 2008 but is expected to suit up for the Dutch at this year's Beijing Olympics, which features U-23 competition in the men's division. Both brothers suited up for the North Scarborough Soccer Club where their father, Bobby, was a former coach. Julian, now 24, played with them until he was 16, including an Ontario Cup championship. At that point the former honours student at Cardinal Newman Catholic High School was given an opportunity by his family to head over to Europe for tryouts, which were ultimately successful. Jonathan, whose last school in Scarborough was St. Rose of Lima elementary school, suited up with North Scarborough teams from four until 12 years. By that time he was playing with 16 year olds, and his family was able to also send him over to Europe for tryouts, which were also ultimately successful. FINAL KICKS Julian de Guzman doesn't have to come back to Scarborough to feel at home. The national team currently includes two other regulars from Scarborough who also suited up against Brazil - Dwayne De Rosario, one of Major League Soccer's top stars who plays for Houston Dynamo; and Adrian Serioux, one of the MSL's staunch defenders who currently suits up for FC Dallas. Serioux just recently got himself fined $1,000 in addition to $250 for a red card for an aggressive tackle of David Beckham, late in a game on May 18 that Serioux' team was losing 5-1. Also taken in consideration by the MSL commissioner was a comment Serioux had made in an interview in a British paper the previous year. "His salary and lifestyle has a lot of players thinking, 'We've dedicated our lives to the game and will have nothing to retire on.' He's great for MLS, but me and a few others are going after him. He's made us feel unappreciated. If Beckham can't handle it, he can play ping-pong or tennis. ... There'll be no line to cross with him, I don't have a line. If he's on the ball, he's there to be hit hard." De Rosario, meanwhile, who anchored the Houston's MLS playoff championship win last season (in a 2-1 win, he set up the first goal, scored the second goal and was named game MVP), almost drew Canada even with Brazil at 3- 3. However, his rushed but open kick from within the penalty area in the 80th minute shot over the crossbar and into the stands. De Guzman and de Rosario, who are both former Robbie soccer tournament champs, split Canadian Soccer Association top awards this past winter, De Rosario winning his third straight player of the year award and De Guzman winning the CSA's fan favourite which was determined by a cross country vote.

Meagan’s “Mini-Walk” at St. Raphael Catholic School

Students at St. Raphael Catholic School have been gathering together to send a message of ‘Kids helping Kids’ through their support of Meagan’s Walk.

Meagan's Walk was named for Meagan Bebenek, a former student at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School, who passed away in 2001 from brain stem glioma. In Meagan’s memory, Denise established an annual Mother’s Day walk to help raise funds for the Meagan Bebenek Endowment Fund for Brain Tumour Research.

Students at St. Raphael were introduced to Meagan’s story and, through readings, they learned about other courageous children sending out messages of hope and love in times of hardship. The students began to think about what they can do to help. It began as a simple gesture of creating paper cranes as a sign of hope, the same cranes that Meagan was given by her classmates at Our Lady of Sorrows when she fell ill. These cranes were brought to the Hospital for Sick Children on the Launch of Meagan’s Walk three years ago. This message was empowering the students to take responsible actions demonstrate their will to help.

The following year, students at the school began asking in September if they can be part of Meagan’s Walk again. The enthusiasm spread throughout the school and soon, teachers began asking about the event. Last year, St. Raphael formed a team of over 40 staff and families who participated in the walk on Mother’s Day. It was a powerful moment when they gathered in front of Sick Kids, and joined hands with other children, mothers, fathers, siblings, friends. All gathered had been touched by the powerful message of hope from an angel named Meagan. and looked towards the hospital, knowing that the children in there all needed their show of support, and raised their arms in a unified hug. Now in the third year and the school community has continued to learn that they send a powerful message. Staff and students are listening, parents are listening, the community is listening, and all are learning from each other.

This year, St. Raphael held its first Meagan’s Mini Walk. Over 550 students, teachers, and parents gathered in a sea of pink and purple (Meagan’s favourite colours), and walked around St. Raphael as Meagan’s song “Goodnight My Angel” carried them forward. The group formed a circle facing the school and joined hands to form a complete chain, “hugging” the school. Silvia Kennedy, a retired principal of Our Lady of Sorrows and a Meagan’s walk committee member, was present at this event

The month of May was officially recognized by the Government of Canada in 2002 as Asian Heritage Month. Submitted by Bernice Peacock

The TCDSB and TDSB have once again jointly organized the Secondary Student Asian Heritage Month Symposium, which was held at OISE on May 8th. The co-chairs of this event were Bernice Peacock from the TCDSB and Karlo Cabrera from the TDSB.

The Symposium consisted of inspiring and fascinating workshops, speakers and performers (with a delicious lunch for nearly 400 people). Five teachers from Blessed Mother Teresa C.S.S. conducted informative and lively workshops on various topics that included: My Secret Identity, Asian Youth in Leadership Positions, Stereotypes in the South Asian Community, Exploring the Filipino Canadian Identity. Volunteers for this event consisted of students from Blessed Mother Teresa.

The richness of the cultural contribution that people of Asian descent have made in this city and our learning communities is hard to imagine and we were able to celebrate and share our teachers’ experiences with hundreds of enthusiastic students representing a wide range of many diverse backgrounds.

Our school was also privileged and honoured to have our Vice Principal Mrs. Bernice Peacock as co-emcee with Superintendent Peter Chang from the TDSB at the Asian Heritage Month “Celebrating Asian Heritage Through the Arts. This event was attended by 1000 students from the TCDSB and TDSB at on May 23/08. Students from a myriad of cultures participated and performed as well as entertained dignitaries, staff and students from the TCDSB and TDSB.

Brebeuf Jazz Hits High Note

2008 has been an exceptional year for the Brebeuf Jazz program. In February, both groups participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival. Fear of Romance, the jazz combo, left the adjudicator speechless with their original compositions and excellent musicianship.

BC Jazz, the stageband, dominated the category scoring an amazing 90% to take first place. Two weeks later, they were awarded the Francis Arrigo scholarship for best in jazz.

Later that month both groups competed in the regional finals of MusicFest Canada. The many hours of hard rehearsal were rewarded as both groups were given award winning invitations to the all Canadian Finals in Ottawa. After several weeks of scrambling to make travel arrangements, the bands were set to travel to Ottawa for four days in May.

Fear of Romance was the first to perform and received glowing reports from all four judges, not only on their talent and musicianship, but their ability to write all original material. For their efforts they received a silver metal.

BC Jazz performed several hours later and amazed the judges with their skilled articulation and jazz interpretations. Much to everyone’s delight the band took home a gold metal. We look forward to next year’s jazz season as all band members are returning to Brebeuf.

A Strength-Based Approach to Assessing and Building Resiliency in High Risk Children and Youth

Featuring: Dr. Wayne Hammond Dr. Wayne Hammond is the president and executive director with Resiliency Canada in Calgary, Alberta. Over the past twenty years, he has primarily worked with high-risk youth and their families with a focus on comorbid, sexually acting out, substance abuse and violence issues as well as other related mental health concerns. He has served in clinical supervisory capacities, worked in a comprehensive residential treatment centre and has provided clinical services in an inpatient/outpatient forensic setting as well as an adolescent comorbidity program based in a hospital setting. He has published several scientific articles and has been an active lecturer with regards to various mental health concerns and the implications of strength-based practice related to working with adolescents and families as well as First Nation youth and their families.

Overview of Session The practical goal of this presentation is to introduce the participants to strength-based model of intervention practice. As opposed to the traditional model of trying to protect and fix the problems of high-risk children and youth, the presentation will highlight the concept of resiliency, a strength-based model of assessment and practice, an exploration of the role of protective factors, and outline the implications for preventative programming and evaluation. The workshop will explore how adult care providers, community care agencies and preventative programs can identify and nurture the protective factors and capacities of children and youth that allow them to cope effectively with everyday challenges, bounce back from adversity, develop realistic goals and treat themselves and others with respect.
