In protostellar clusters where most stars form, outflows impact the cluster environment by injecting momentum and energy into the cloud, dispersing the surrounding gas and feeding turbulent motions. Here we present several studies of very dense, active regions within low- to intermediate-mass Why: protostellar clusters. Our observations include interferometer (i.e. CARMA) and single dish (e.g. FCRAO, IRAM 30m, APEX) To recover flux over a range of spatial scales in the region observations, probing scales over several orders of magnitude. It is open to everyone that is interested, and if you are able to contribute notes, drawings, or photographs, we will be happy to include them in our monthly summary. Observing is not only a pleasure, but an art. With the main focus of amateur astronomy on astrophotography, many times people tend to forget how it was in the days before cameras, clock drives, and GOTO. Astronomy depended on what was seen through the eyepiece. Not only did it satisfy an innate curiosity, but it allowed the first astronomers to discover the beauty and the wonderment of the night sky. Before photography, all observations depended on what the astronomer saw in the eyepiece, and how they recorded their observations. This was done through notes and drawings and that is the tradition we are stressing in the observers challenge. By combining our visual observations with our drawings, and sometimes, astrophotography (from those with the equipment and talent to do so), we get a unique understanding of what it is like to look through an eyepiece, and to see what is really there. The hope is that you will read through these notes and become inspired to take more time at the eyepiece studying each object, and looking for those subtle details that you might never have noticed before. -

It consists of a humorous 24-minute show and educator’s package. The Orion Educator’s Guide is designed for Planetarians, Teachers, and parents. The information is researched, organized, and laid out so that the educator need not spend hours coming up with lesson plans or labs. This has already been accomplished by certified educators. The guide is written to alleviate the fear of space and the night sky (that many elementary and middle school teachers have) when it comes to that section of the science lesson plan. It is an excellent tool that allows the parents to be a part of the learning experience. The guide is devised in such a way that there are plenty of visuals to assist the educator and student in finding the Winter constellations. -

Also, Saturn is looking quite striking as the rings are now tilted at a nice angle allowing us to see the Casini Division and shadows on and from the planet. Don't miss it! I've been asked by BREC to make sure our club members are all aware of the Park Rules listed on BREC's website. Many of the rules are actually ordinances enacted by the city of Baton Rouge (e.g., No smoking permitted in public areas, No alcohol brought onto or sold on BREC property, No Gambling, No Firearms or Weapons, etc.) Please make sure you observe all of the Park Rules while at the HRPO and provide good examples for the general public. (Many of which are from outside East Baton Rouge Parish and are likely unaware of some of the policies.) Tsvetanov9, ABSTRACT We investigate the central regions of 23 spiral galaxies using archival NICMOS imag- ing and STIS spectroscopy. The sample is taken from our program to determine the masses of central massive black holes (MBH) in 54 nearby spiral galaxies. Stars are likely to contribute significantly to any dynamical central mass concentration that we find in our MBH program and this paper is part of a series to investigate the nuclear properties of these galaxies. We use the Nuker law to fit surface brightness profiles, derived from the NICMOS images, to look for nuclear star clusters and find possible extended sources in 3 of the 23 galaxies studied (13 per cent). The fact that this fraction is lower than that inferred from optical Hubble Space Telescope studies is probably due to the greater spatial resolution of those studies. Using R-H and J-H colors and equiv- alent widths of Hα emission (from the STIS spectra) we investigate the nature of the stellar population with evolutionary models. Under the assumption of hot stars ionizing the gas, as opposed to a weak AGN, we find that there are young stellar populations (∼10–20 Myr) however these data do not allow us to determine what percentage of the 1Centre for Astrophysical Research, STRI, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, AL10 9AB, UK.
