    2012 Summer Symposium, presented by Faculty Biographies Division Coordinators and Educational Consultants Mark Buselli Jazz Band Division Coordinator Mark Buselli is Director of Jazz Studies at Ball State University. Awards include a 2010-2011 BSU College of Fine Arts Dean’s Creative Arts Award, a Creative Renewal grant from the Indianapolis Arts Council in 2005, a teacher of the year award in 2004 at Butler University, a Creative Vision award from NUVO in May of 2007, a top 10 CD release of 2009 (December 2009) in JAZZIZ magazine for “An Old Soul,” and a top 100 CD of the decade (January 2010) in DownBeat magazine for the Buselli/Wallarab release of “Basically Baker.” Mr. Buselli has over 40 arrangements published for big bands, brass ensemble and piano/trumpet. He has nine recordings out as a leader on the Owlstudios and OA2 record labels. He has written/arranged/performed for numerous artists.Mr. Buselli currently serves as Education Director of the Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra/Midcoast Swing Orchestra in Indianapolis, where he has created numerous educational opportunities for over 10,000 students. Mr. Buselli graduated from the Berklee School of Music in Boston and received his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University.     Broward County Public Schools SECTION 3: SMART Program Music & Art Equipment Deployment For the Bond Oversight Committee Quarter Ended June 30, 2016 BROWARD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SMART PROGRAM QUARTERLY UPDATE MUSIC EQUIPMENT DEPLOYMENT DISTRICT EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES PLAN FUNDING Prior to the SMART Initiative and the voter approved general obligation bond (GOB), a musical instrument replacement project was initiated as a part of the 2013-14 District Education Facilities Plan. The premise of the project was to bring targeted schools up to minimum standards (quantity and type) of musical instruments and equipment. Working with the Office of Academics; it was determined that middle schools were the primary focus of this project, along with their feeder High Schools. This is necessary in order to assist with the articulation and growth of the current 6-12 music program. Middle schools were directed to provide data showing deficiencies in equipment, based upon the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) middle school “Basic Equipment List”. Schools were ranked based upon (1) equipment needs, (2) years since last major funding and (3) commitment to their music program. Adequate funds were provided to fulfill most or all of their requirements to bring these schools up to “basic equipment” levels. The plan substantially funded a block of schools with the idea that each year additional schools, that have not been serviced will also be brought up to basic equipment levels with additional funding. The first year, $1.5 million was allocated for this project. Six middle schools and four high schools were targeted with this funding. When funding became available during the 2014-15 school year, the procurement process was initiated.

    GETTING STARTED IN PERCUSSION by Cynthia Coy How to Become a Skilled Percussionist My Experience As a Beginner Percussionist When you first get started with your musical career, you’ll never know where it might take you! I spent my entire career as a percussionist, but when I first signed up for band, my plan was to play the trumpet. My braces wound up being an issue, so when I was offered a choice between the trombone, alto saxophone, and percussion in sixth grade, I decided to pursue the latter and haven’t looked back since! At first, I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of being a percussionist. At that time gender roles were still a big influence on which instrument you wound up playing, but it didn’t take long before I found my inspiration in Karen Carpenter (of The Carpenters). A critically acclaimed drummer, she proved that you could be both a girl and a skilled percussionist! Our high school went through three different band directors in four years, each one offering their own specialty. It wasn’t until my first high school band director (a trumpet player) was replaced by a percussionist that I realized how important it was to have a specialist providing one-on-one feedback regarding technique and play style.
