Spotter Guide NEWGARDEN AIMS FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT WIN: After winning the last two Verizon IndyCar Series races, Josef Newgarden (pictured) finds himself atop the series point standings. Newgarden, who leads his Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves by 7 points and Scott Dixon by 8 points, will try to become the fifth driver since 2012 to win three consecutive races this weekend at Pocono. Will he add another milestone to his 2017 season? Joe Skibinski/INDYCAR PHOTO WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: • ANOTHER FIRST-TIME WINNER AT TRICKY TRIANGLE?: A different driver has won the four previous races at Pocono with Scott Dixon, Juan Pablo Montoya, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Will Power visiting victory lane since the series returned in 2013. Will one of those drivers conquer the Tricky Triangle again? Or can another new winner be crowned? • ANDRETTI LOOKS FOR BREAKTHROUGH WIN AT HOMETOWN TRACK: Marco Andretti will compete in a virtual hometown race at Pocono. Andretti can lean on family ties for some advice as Pocono is one of two tracks where all three generations of racing’s most famous family have had success. Andretti’s grandfather, racing legend Mario Andretti, won the 1986 Pocono race, the same year that Marco’s father, Michael, won the pole. Marco claimed the pole for the Pocono race in 2013. • FANTASY FOCUS: Looking for a fantasy favorite? Try a Team Penske driver. Josef Newgarden and Will Power have finished in the top five in three of their four Pocono starts. Scott Dixon—along with Newgarden and Power—has finished in the top 10 in every Pocono start. Need a value pick? Carlos Munoz has finished in the top seven in all three of his starts at Pocono. • SATO AIMS FOR 500-MILE SWEEP: After winning his first oval race in the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 in May, Takuma Sato looks to add another 500-mile win to his resume. The Japanese driver used a combination of speed and strategy to win at Indy. Can he conquer another test of man and machine this week? • The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500
The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. Baker Department of Geography School of Liberal Arts IUPUI We thank Terri Talbert-Hatch and Pete Hylton for their comments and support of Motorsports Studies. Please direct correspondence to Robert White ([email protected]), Professor of Sociology and Director of Motorsports Studies, or Andrew Baker ([email protected]), Lecturer, Department of Geography, School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 425 University Boulevard, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46202. 1 The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Abstract Over the course of its lengthy history, the popularity of open-wheeled automobile racing in the United States has waxed and waned. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

Simon Pagenaud took control of the championship standings following a torrid start to 2016 with five finishes of first or second in the first five races and carries a 43-point advantage over Will Power into the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
