THEATRE & SHOW Promenade theatre (Eng.), Akershus Fortress, 10th – 12th August at 12 Walk through 700 years of history at Akershus Fortress! Professional actors as well as the audience move around on the fortress grounds. The performance is in English. Performance in Norwegian at 2 pm on the same day. Øya Festival, Tøyenparken, 10th – 13th August One of Oslo’s largest music festivals, with a lineup that always includes big international names, promising newcomers and everything in between. Nature and culture meet in the festival area in Tøyenparken for four days of concerts, food, stalls and activities. The Tuesday night before the outdoor festival starts is Øya club night, with concerts at numerous clubs and indoor venues in the city. For more information and confirmed artist, click here. Oslo Jazz Festival, 14th -20th August Annual jazz festival with an emphasis on quality and history. You will find practically every genre represented at Oslo Jazz Festival, from ragtime to rap via main styles swing, bop and modern electric and acoustic forms. Oslo Jazz Festival was held for the first time in 1986, and presents about 80 events every year. After 30 years the festival has built a strong reputation among performers, their agencies and audiences alike for being a warm and professionally executed festival. The Stone Carving Festival, Steinhoggermuseet, 12th -14th August Stone carvers from all over the world gathered to display their skills. During this three day event participants will be carving Norwegian stone using only hand tools. On Sunday, the carvers will lay down their tools, and then their pieces will be auctioned off to the public. You have the chance to see the work from start to finish, as well as take home your very own unique piece of craftsmanship. The Festival takes place on the grounds of the Steinhoggermuseet på Grorud (The stone carving museum at Grorud). Free entrance to the festival and museum, including lots of activities for the whole family. The museum is well worth a visit. You will have the opportunity to try your hand at stone carving with real granite tools. Some of the activities include excursions to the old quarries nearby, chats on geology and history as well as film viewings. Also many activities aimed at children of all ages. MARKETS Farmers’ Market Majorstua, 13th August at 10-16 Market where you can buy fresh, unique foods directly from the farmers themselves. Buy local food from the people who grew and made it! Farmers’ Market Oslo is held on alternating Saturdays at Valkyrie plass (Vibes gate/ Bogstadveien), Birkelunden, Aker Brygge and Youngstorget. For more information click here. CONCERTS

Jan Garbarek Group feat. Trilok Gurtu, Den Norske Opera & Ballett, 14th August at 18 Oslo Jazz Festival presents Jan Garbarek Group featuring Trilok Gurtu as the opening concert at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet, marking the festival’s 30th anniversary in 2016. Garbarek played at festivals in Warsaw and Prague with Karin Krogh as far back as 1966. With his own quartet consisting of Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen, they recorded and toured clubs and jazz festivals. He also worked with the American jazz musician George Russell who stated that Garbarek was “the largest European-style creator since Django Reinhardt”. Jan Garbarek has never been at a standstill musically, but the “Garbarek sound” is easily recognisable no matter what musical context he explores. He has listened to and been inspired by the greatest jazz, classical and folk music from various regions of the world and constantly worked purposefully with his own expression. Chestnut, Williams & White, Nasjonal Jazzscene Victoria, 14th August at 21 This year’s edition of Oslo Jazz Festival kicks off with a super trio consisting of Cyrus Chestnut, Buster Williams and Lenny White. The concert is based around the 2015 release Natural Essence, a beautiful collection of classic trio material. Click here for tickets. Praxis Performing Arts Festival, Into the Body Into the Wild, Dansens Hus, 13th – 14th August This year’s edition of Praxis Dance Festival is entitled Into the body into the wild. The festival focuses on the body through workshops, seminars and performances. To shed light on this year’s topic, the organisers have invited the following festival artists: BodyCartography Project/Olive Bieringa (NZ) & Otto Ramstad (USA) and Alix Eynaudi (FR). The weekend of 13th and 14th August, they and the festival offers seminars, mini workshops and showings at Dance House Norway. The events are open to anyone who is interested in experiencing and talking about how the performing arts approach and work with the body as a theme. DAY/ EVENING TRIP Summer evening cruise, Oslo Fjord, Monday-Sunday at 19-22 Evening fjord cruise on a traditional wooden sailing ship on the inner Oslo Fjord, passing a maze of green islands and sounds, Akershus Fortress, the Opera House, Hovedøya island and several lighthouses. The tour lasts for three hours, and included in the price is a traditional Norwegian prawn buffet with prawns “au naturelle”, lemon, mayonnaise, bread and butter. Drinks for sale on board. Children’s theatre: Dyrene i Hakkebakkeskogen, Until 21st August at 11 & 14 The well-known Children’s theatre “Dyrene I Hakkebakkeskogen” is performed throughout August in Frognerparken, a play that is a lot of fun for children. Where:Sirkusteltet,by Monolitten How to get there: Tram 12 to Frognerparken Photo: Nationaltheateret SPORT Death Plunge World Championship, Frognerbadet, 13th August at 16 Death plunge diving or “dødsing” is a strange Norwegian sport where contestants jump off the diving board at 10 metres, try to hold a dangerous looking pose for as long as possible, and then curl up just before hitting the water. “Dødsing” is not for the timid, or those with a low pain threshold, but the stands are open for all. Address: Middelthuns gate 28 Photo: VisitOslo EATING OUT Beer tasting (Eng.), Ølakademiet, until 20th August at 16.30 Join a beer tasting in Oslo and sample Norwegian craft beers while learning about the Vikings’ relation to this fabulous beverage! The tasting is held in English. Ølakademiet (‘the beer academy’) invites you to join an hour-long beer tasting session. While tasting a selection of Norwegian beers of today, you hear about the Vikings’ relation to ale, mead, and intoxicants in general. You will also learn about how significantly alcohol consumption impacted the Norwegian Constitution of 1814 and other tidbits of Norwegian beer history - including the story of the oldest brewery in Norway still in operation, and of the recent Norwegian craft beer revolution. Beer tastings in July and August take place in Ølakademiet’s basement at Grünerløkka. Tastings must be booked in advance, and require a minimum of eight registrered participants to take place.
