The Special Olympics World Games 2019 will be held in Abu Dhabi. The Games will be the world’s largest humanitarian and sporting event of 2019. This showcase event marks the first time the Special Olympics World Games will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In order for Special Olympics USA (SO USA) athletes to be successful at the Games they must train and prepare locally. In addition, SO USA athletes and delegation members must represent themselves, their families, their Programs, their states and the USA as ambassadors. As such, all delegation members must attend the SO USA Training Camp with the following goals in mind: GOALS OF TRAINING CAMP 1. To train and prepare athletes in their selected sport for competition against athletes from around the world. 2. To provide an opportunity for athletes to meet their teammates and coaches from around the country that will be traveling with them to Abu Dhabi. 3. To provide coaches the chance to determine the ability levels of the athletes so they can be placed in events that best reflect their abilities. 4. To help the coaches and management team assess each delegate’s capability of making the journey to Abu Dhabi. If, in the rare occasion, there is a person who cannot demonstrate the ability to be away from home, steps will be taken to help rectify the situation to allow the athlete the opportunity to compete at the World Games level. 5. To provide the management team an opportunity to test the medical and communication systems that will be in place at the World Games.
