OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS Lee Sternberger – [email protected] | Felix Wang – [email protected] Institute (CI) is a non-profit public educational organization affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, whose aim is to promote Chinese language and culture, support local Chinese teaching internationally, and facilitate cultural exchanges.

Official Objectives and Statistics Founded: 2004 Overseen by: (office of Chinese Language Council International) Objective: Due to increasing impact of Chinese economy, the worldwide demand in learning Chinese language and understanding has increased. As a result, Chinese government established a non-profit educational institution that facilitates cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and the rest of the world, in addition to promoting understanding of Chinese language and culture. Role: Provides instruction in Chinese language and culture, sponsors extracurricular activities (art, exhibitions, lectures, conferences, film screenings, and celebrations of Chinese festivals), sometimes funds research of local faulty of Chinese subjects. As of 2010 there are: 322 Confucius Institutes and 369 Confucius Classrooms in 96 countries.

They achieve their objective by offering programs that fall into following categories:

- University Initiatives o Campus programs and curriculums (majors, minors, concentrations) o Faculty and student exchange o Scholarships and fellowships - Community programs o Conversational and business Chinese courses (non-credit bearing), and culture courses (calligraphy, martial arts, etc.) - Cultural events o Exhibits, performances, parades, Chinese cultural holiday celebrations (ex. Chinese New Year) - K-12 o Chinese language teacher training o Scholarships o Language competitions o Chinese culture themed events for students - Visa application support - Offer other opportunities through partnerships with local and international organizations.
