NSW Tides 2019 – 2020
NSW Tides 2019–2020 Tidal predictions for Sydney Harbour with moon phases July 2019 – June 2020 Tidal predictions are calculated by the Tidal Unit, Bureau of Meteorology from daily tide recordings made at Fort Denison in Sydney Harbour. Tide heights refer to zero on the Fort Denison Tide Gauge, being approximately the level of the Lowest Astronomical Tide. Times are in local standard time (UTC +10:00) or daylight savings time (UTC +11:00) when in effect. Tide heights are quoted in metres. Tide heights of 1.7 metres or more, and 0.3 metres or less, are highlighted for trip planning and risk awareness. Users of these tables should be aware that the heights shown in this publication are predictions for average meteorological conditions only and that the actual water level height may vary due to meteorological conditions (including barometric pressure, wind effect and storm surges) and seasonal variations. Copyright in the Tidal Predictions is owned by the Commonwealth of Australia represented by the Bureau of Meteorology. This product is based on Bureau of Meteorology information that has subsequently been modified. The Bureau does not necessarily support or endorse, or have any connection with, the product. Newsletter – Autumn 2017 CLARENCE ENVIRONMENT CENTRE 31 Skinner St, South Grafton 2460 Phone / Fax 66 43 1863 Email: [email protected] Website www.cec.org.au ____________________________________________________________________ Chaffin Creek drying up Some of those involved with the Upper Coldstream Biodiversity project will recognise the log crossing that we used to cross Chaffin Creek waterholes on the crown land at the northern end of Firth Heinz Road, home to the very healthy Giant Dragonfly population. As you can see there was no need for the 'bridge' when this picture was taken in mid February. The creek had ceased to flow, but I had never seen the waterholes so depleted. I know there was a major drought in the Clarence, and none worse affected than Pillar Valley, but I was still surprised at the dramatic drop in the level of water in these permanent waterholes. It so happens that the crown land is right next to the Pacific Highway upgrade As can be see there was no need for a 'bridge' when this picture (forest now cleared right up was taken in mid February. Email: [email protected] Abstract The semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera-Heteroptera, infraorder Gerromorpha), comprising water striders and their allies, are familiar inhabitants of water surfaces in all continents. Currently, the world fauna has more than 1,900 described species classified in eight families and 165 genera.A phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony was performed on a dataset comprising 56 morphological characters scored for 24 examplar genera covering all families and subfamilies of Gerromorpha. The phylogenetic relationships found concur with those presented by Andersen (1982) except that the relationships between some subfamilies of Veliidae andGerridae are unresolved. The Australian fauna of Gerromorpha comprises six families, 30 genera, and 123 species. One third of the genera and more than 80% of the species are endemic to Australia. Previously, we have covered all Australian species of the families Gerridae, Hermatobatidae, and Veliidae. The present paper deals with the families Hebridae, Hydrometridae, and Mesoveliidae. We offer redescriptions or descriptive notes on all previously described species, describe Mesovelia ebbenielseni sp. nov. (Mesoveliidae), Austrohebrus apterus, gen. et sp. nov., and Hebrus pilosus sp. nov. (Hebridae), and synonymise Hebrus woodwardi Lansbury, syn. nov. (Hebridae) and Hydrometra halei Hungerford and Evans, syn. nov. (Hydrometridae). We present keys for the identification of genera and species, and map the distribution of all species. -
Overcoming Obstacles to Improving Fish Migration at Coastal Weir and Road Crossing Barriers
10 YEARS ON: OVERCOMING OBSTACLES TO IMPROVING FISH MIGRATION AT COASTAL WEIR AND ROAD CROSSING BARRIERS M Gordos 1, S Nichols 1, C Lay 1 1NSW Department of Primary Industries – Fisheries Abstract The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI Fisheries) has been actively improving migration at priority fish passage barriers along coastal NSW for over 10 years. The culmination of these efforts was the recent completion of the award winning Bringing Back the Fish project in 2010 that resulted in improved fish passage at 10 priority weirs and 22 road crossings, thereby improving native fish access to over 1,235 km of additional waterway. The success of the BBTF project is attributed to lessons learned from earlier projects that allowed high priority fish passage barriers to be addressed, despite remediation options at many of these sites being discussed since the 1980’s. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate solutions to common obstacles experienced by DPI Fisheries when attempting to improve fish passage at priority barriers through the use of case studies. Site examples will cover the removal of an obsolete structure (Manyweathers Weir – Richmond River), the redesign of an existing barrier (Coral Avenue, Brunswick River), and fishway installation (Locketts Crossing – Coolongolook River; Clarksons Crossing – Wallamba River). Case studies will be discussed from concept through to completion, including site promotion. With respect to these sites, common obstacles that were experienced and overcome include a lack of stakeholder support, inadequate funding, unrealistic timeframes, heritage significance, poor planning, a lack of suitable surveys, and concern regarding the presence of platypus. With this information in hand, stakeholders including local councils, state agencies, and landholders can strategically address remaining priority fish passage barriers in order to make more fish naturally. -
