The honor is a first for both coaches and represents just the second tie in the award’s history. In 1966, Amo Bessone of Michigan State and Len Ceglarski of Clarkson shared the honor. Brad Berry was also selected by his peers as the top bench Leading a Cornell team that was ranked No. 1 in the country man in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, winning the for large portions of the season, Mike Schafer put together one NCHC’s Herb Brooks Coach of the Year award for the second of the best seasons in Big Red history. Cornell finished 2019-20 time in his five years as head coach.     News from the AMERICAN HOCKEY COACHES ASSOCIATION For immediate release: Tuesday, March 30, 2020 Finalists Announced for Spencer Penrose Award Given to CCM/AHCA Men’s Hockey Division I Coach of the Year Ten coaches who have enjoyed on-ice success in 2020-21 have been named finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the CCM/AHCA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year. Selected by the nation's 61 NCAA Division I head coaches, the winner will be announced on Tuesday, April 6. The nominees represent any coach who won or shared Coach of the Year honors in his conference this past season, as well as coaches whose teams have advanced to the 2021 NCAA Frozen Four. The only coach who has done both is Minnesota State's Mike Hastings. Of this year's finalists, six are past recipients of this award: Brad Berry of North Dakota (2020), Greg Carvel of UMass (2019), Mike Hastings of Minnesota State (2015), Rand Pecknold of Quinnipiac (2016), Scott Sandelin of Minnesota Duluth (2004) and Jerry York of Boston College (1977.)     News from the AMERICAN HOCKEY COACHES ASSOCIATION For immediate release: Tuesday, April 6, 2021 Minnesota State’s Mike Hastings Is Voted CCM/AHCA Division I Men’s Coach of the Year Second Spencer Penrose Award for Mavericks’ Coach For leading Minnesota State University into the 2021 Frozen Four, Mike Hastings has been chosen the recipient of the 2021 Spencer Penrose Award as Division I Men’s Ice Hockey CCM/AHCA Coach of the Year. The honor is the second for Hastings, who was also the recipient in 2015. The 2020-21 Mavericks have enjoyed tremendous success this season and look to extend that when they take on St. Cloud State Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in the first NCAA Semifinal in Pittsburgh. They were able to advance to the Frozen Four by virtue of two victories at the NCAA Regionals in Loveland, CO. In the first game, the Maver- icks trailed Quinnipiac, 3-1, late in the third period but rallied to tie the game and win it in overtime, 4-3. In the Regional Final, MNSU rode the goaltending of Dryden McKay to down the University of Minneso- ta, 4-0. The Mavericks, who bring a record of 22-4-1 into the weekend, captured the WCHA regular season title this past season, going 13- 1-2 in league play. It was the sixth MacNaughton Cup in Hastings’ nine seasons with Minnesota State. Overall, MNSU leads the NCAA in team defense with a 1.52 goals allowed average. They are also averaging 3.56 goals per game, fifth best in the NCAA.
