Junior Parent/Student College Information Night – Lake Braddock Student Services is hosting a panel of 5 College Admission Representatives to present on the following topics. College Partnership Program is accepting applications now through March 18. The goals of College Partnership are to increase the academic achievement of underachieving students and to increase the number of students, particularly first generation and minority students, who enroll and succeed in college. The CPP creates opportunities for students to successfully navigate the home, school, and college continuum. Members attend monthly meetings at Lake Braddock and have access to a robust county program which includes parent support and college visits. Registered Apprenticeship and Career Fair - The Office of Counseling and College and Career Readiness (CCCR) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) are teaming up with the Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) to host an event for high school students, parents and/or guardians and the community to learn about exciting new opportunities through work- based learning experiences. Work-based learning provides students with a continuum of career-related experiences that extend classroom learning to support the development of career goals in preparation for education and employment beyond high school. This event will focus on providing an inside look at how to prepare high school students for a promising future by taking advantage of work-based learning opportunities such as apprenticeships.

Students in grades 9 - 12 are requested to bring a parent and/or guardian to learn all about the Youth Registered and Registered Apprenticeship work-based learning experiences which can meet high school graduation requirements through CTE classes. Information will be provided about career-related opportunities and potential employers will be on-site to answer questions and provide insight on what is needed to prepare for a promising career. FBI 2020 Future Agents in Training Program Our Future Agents in Training - Teen Academy program allows high school students an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI. Generally, each course iteration is a minimum of eight hours but can be a week-long program with blocks of instruction and demonstrations at a local field office. Students are provided with several presentations on topics including terrorism, cybercrime, public corruption, polygraph exams, evidence response, SWAT, and the day-to-day operations of a typical FBI office. Students also learn from special agents, intelligence analysts, language specialists, and professional staff about investigative tactics that include gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assisting with cases.

2020 VA-10 Academy Day The Office of Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District would like to invite all high school students that have interest in attending any of the five Service Academies, or have an interest in a future in the US military, to participate in the 2020 VA-10 Academy Day, to be held on Saturday April 4th, from 10:00am-1:00pm. This will be an outstanding opportunity for your students to meet with staff, alumni, and current cadets from the four nomination required academies (USNA, USMA, USAFA, and USMMA) as well as the Coast Guard Academy and representatives from ROTC and Military Colleges from across the state.

Fourth Circuit Sponsors 2020 High School Essay Contest - 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, extending the right to vote to women and expanding on the principle of equality. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit is seeking submissions for its 2020 essay contest. Students are invited to consider and share their thoughts on the question: “What barriers remain today in exercising the right to vote? What changes, if any, would you make to protect or expand voting rights?" The contest is open to all students currently in grades 9 through 12 from Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Essays are limited to 1,000 words and must be submitted by Wednesday, April 15, 2020. Students can win one of three cash prizes: first place, $2,000; second place, $1,500; and third place, $1,000. Winners will be announced in July, and travel will be provided to the court’s Essay Awards Program in September 2020. BRIDGING BRUINS CLASS OF 2020 A 2 to 3 week out of school internship at the end of May 2020. Qualifications: 1) 2.5 overall GPA for the 1st Semester of your Senior year AND a grade of “C” or higher in each class at the end of the 3rd quarter. 2) No more than five excused absences – including Bruin Block – during any quarter prior to the start of your internship excluding school-sponsored activities and college visits. 3) No significant disciplinary infractions during your senior year. 4) Must have completed all graduation requirements including AP, online, dual enrollment, and state mandated tests. Further information is attached. Page one lists the internship partners from last year -- this is not an exhaustive list of available opportunities; rather, it provides food for thought when considering your own internship. While you still have much to accomplish in the classroom before graduation, a Bridging Bruins internship will provide a phenomenal culminating activity to your high school career.

FINANCIAL AID - The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will be available for completion beginning October 1, 2019 for students graduating in June of 2020 and attending college in the fall of 2020. The FAFSA must be submitted in order for your student to be eligible for financial aid and many scholarship opportunities. In addition, the CSS Profile (required by about 400 schools - including several in Virginia) became available on October 1. For those who are ready to complete the FAFSA, one-on-one FREE FAFSA Completion Clinics will be held at the following locations. Registration is required for all Seminars and Completion Clinics. Burke Lake Baskets and Bunnies - This year will be the 4th annual Baskets and Bunnies event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 11th. Volunteer opportunities for Baskets and Bunnies include arts and crafts assistants, registration assistants, moon bounce monitors, egg hunt assistants, costumed greeters, train and carousel assistants and mini golf assistants.

MULCH SALE ADULT & HIGH SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED PTSA needs lots of adult and student volunteers to help on March 21st and 22nd. Underclassmen can earn service hours. Red Cross VolunTeen Program American Red Cross we will be offering a summer program for teens ages 14 to 17 beginning in July. It is a six-week program and VolunTeens must complete 5 of the 6 weeks in order to obtain credit. Application requirements include a minimum of four hours per shift and a minimum of eight hours a week, each week. They must also complete an immunization screening with our Occupational Health Department. Teens must also provide a letter of recommendation from a coach, teacher, employer etc... Hospital policy also mandates that all staff and volunteers must be a U.S. Citizen. Applications are available now and must be picked up at the Ft. Belvoir Red Cross Office and returned by March 23rd. Although we are located on a military facility, the program is open to everyone. Copy of the flyer is attached.

Springfield Music Club 2020 Volunteer Opportunity The Springfield Music Club is looking for volunteers for its yearly Spring Festival. Volunteers are called pages and are an integral part to making this event successful. Students from 4th – 12th grade may volunteer for as little as one hour or as many as twelve hours. Ward Scholarship -Mr. Ward was a former Lake Braddock parent to three Scholar Athletes, this scholarship has been established in memory of our Dad. He was awarded a full athletic scholarship to play football (linebacker) at Penn State University and University of Maryland. He was member of the Peach Bowl Team and a recipient of the All ACC Academic Team.

Mr. Ward was an enthusiastic supporter of Lake Braddock sports, and valued high academic standards in the classroom therefore we can’t think of a more fitting way to honor our Dad’s memory than to create a scholarship at Lake Braddock to help hardworking and involved students begin their college careers.
