Joseph’s Vision in the Grove

INSIDE: The Story Behind the Painting – p. 5 The Presidential Tour – p. 8 Your – p. 16 Our Epitome of Faith The statement below is a summary of our fundamental and foundational beliefs. It was originally presented by , Jr., in Volume III, No. 9 of Times and Seasons, pages 709-710, March 1, 1842.

We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in his Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression. We believe that through the atonement of Christ all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel. We believe that these ordinances are, first, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, repentance; third, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. We believe that a man must be called of God by “prophesy, and by laying on of hands” by those who are in authority to preach the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. We believe in the same organization that existed in the primitive church, viz.: apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, etc. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophesy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, etc. We believe the to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the to be the word of God. We believe all that God has revealed, all that he does now reveal, and we believe that he will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the kingdom of God. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes, that Zion will be built upon this continent, that Christ will reign personally upon the earth, and that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisaic glory. We claim the privilege of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul, “we believe all things, we hope all things,” we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is any thing virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. Respectfully, Joseph Smith, Jr.

Issue 77 | www.theremnantchurch.com | 3 Editorial Comment . . .

As the Remnant Church and its members enter a new year, the idea and yearly theme of Moving Forward to Zion has been selected to emphasize the fact that, even though we can be very pleased for all that has been accomplished by this relatively small band of saints in the past 18 years, we look forward with great anticipation to further the work of bringing to pass the cause of Zion. Remember that this year in April we gather together in Priesthood Assembly and Women’s Retreat and assemble in April 2020 for General Conference. It is always such a joyous time as we gather in fellowship, instruction, and worship. At such a time, we will be lifted up and perhaps gain an ever better understanding of what it means to Move Forward to Zion. Even as we understand that it is clearly our responsibility to “preach the fullness of the gospel to all who will listen,” our goal as a corporate entity, the Remnant Church, is to “prepare and gather a righteous people for the building of the Kingdom of God on earth, Zion.” The words of one of our zionic hymns comes to mind. The prophet Frederick M. Smith, in 1922 by the voice of inspiration, wrote words to a hymn we know as “Onward to Zion.” The first few words are thus: “Onward to Zion, faithful and strong, Zion the beautiful beckons us on, Onward and upward battle along.” The word beckon suggests a call or summons to some attraction or goal. Indeed, the concept and idea of the fulfillment of the kingdom is truly a beautiful thing. The word battle also brings to mind words of another of our hymns, “God is Marshaling His Army.” Many challenging words for us can be found in that hymn: “God is marshaling his army For the rescue of his truth.” The Remnant saints believe that through the prophetic office of the church, guidance and direction for the body of Christ has been provided in these latter days. The hymn continues: “He is calling now to battle Both the aged and the youth.” Again, the Remnant Church is being blessed with energized and devoted young people joining in the battle for the work, supported and guided by the aged giving guidance and direction to the vision to the kingdom, even Zion. Go to your hymnals and read and reread the words to these two hymns, and see if you do not grasp and sense the challenge of Moving Forward to Zion. We call your attention to two passages of scripture from latter day revelation: “Continue to be faithful, humble, and unified in your worship and service to me and, as promised earlier, my Zion will unfold before you. Thus saith the Spirit. Amen” (D&C R–47:6b). “l, the Lord, your Savior, await the coming forth of my Zion as a blossoming flower, beckoning for all to come and see the kingdom of God on earth” (D&C R–150:8b). May it be so. Amen.

The Story Behind the Painting on the Cover of this Issue of The Hastening Times

As the work progressed on our Remnant Church video during 2017 and 2018, we began to realize that there were visual images that we did not have and could not find on the internet image sources we were using. Most important was a picture of Joseph Smith in the grove. This event is so fundamental to the Restoration that we knew it had to appear on our screen. So, we began to look for someone to do a custom painting for us. Muriel Luedeman was the first person contacted, and she initially declined due to time constraints. However, she later did agree to take on the project, and the lovely painting that resulted thrilled us all! Here, in part, is Sister Luedeman’s own testimony: Sister Joan Vun Cannon and her son, Jim, approached me in late 2017 or early 2018 about doing a commissioned painting of Joseph Smith, Jr.’s, vision in the grove for the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I didn’t think I could do it justice without adequate photograph[ic] reference material for such a painting, and so I passed it up. However, that problem resolved itself in March and April. I agreed to take on the challenge. It seemed important for this painting to illustrate the Father and the Son together, yet separately in their relationship to each other and with Joseph. In one account, the Father said, “This is my beloved Son; hear him.” In addition, it didn’t seem out of line to depict God the Father with gray hair. I also wanted to capture an expression of love and compassion, even pity, in the faces of “Yehoshua [the Son] and Yahweh [the Father],” for they knew all of what was to happen in this young boy’s life after this experience. There is a smile, but there is also understanding, sorrow, and deep, loving regard for Joseph’s future sacrifice. Joseph recounted that an evil presence engulfed him as he began to pray. The pose I chose to capture was after Joseph saw the shaft of light and was engulfed in the loving presence of Jesus and the Father. He must have had great relief being delivered from the deadly evil presence. He raises his arms to God, as a child reaches for his earthly father, to be rescued from a menacing threat. Yahweh’s [the Father’s] right hand rests on Yehoshua’s [the Son’s] shoulder, showing the loving bond between them. For me, the painting personalizes for the viewer the LOVE God has for all of his children, and he instantaneously appears when we cry out in doubt and fear. He has compassion for what we all go through in life, and he is always, always with us, ready to receive us into his loving arms. Muriel Luedeman Truly, this is a work of heart. Sister Muriel’s depth of purpose is eloquently expressed on the canvas. The painting will hang in a place of honor in our new Visitors Center. Stop by and view it and stay for the movie! We have prints of this painting in the headquarters office for purchase. Contact headquarters at 816-461-7215 for more information.

NON-RESIDENT PASTORS – by James A. Vun Cannon, Counselor to the First Presidency In the Book of Mormon we are given the instruction to take the names of the saints that they might be remembered and nourished by the word of God. “And their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith” (Moroni 6:5). Saints have this in our organized areas with local providing home ministry, preaching services, prayer services, and classes. However, in the unorganized areas, far from a branch or congregation, saints must rely on their own study and devotions to stay in the right way. A non-resident pastor is provided to give pastoral care to those saints who are not in an organized area. This person performs many of the duties of a pastor but without a physical church building. Instead, a non- resident pastor is assigned to a region. Those saints located in the region are in his care. He provides personal contact and ministry via phone, letters, email, or personal visits in an effort to heed the command from Moroni 6:5. Currently, we have designated two regions, an East Region and a West Region. Names of the saints in our church records who do not attend an organized branch or group will be moved to a region and be under the care of a non-resident pastor. The non-resident pastor for the East Region is High Priest Wayne A. Bartrow. We are in the process of selecting a pastor for the West Region. Please pray for this ministry as we hope to provide valuable ministry to those saints and possible missionary opportunities for the church.

6 | The Hastening Times | Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr 2019 Financial Update

by Presiding Bishop W. Kevin Romer

As we have done in the past, in an effort to keep the saints apprised of the financial condition of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we are once again taking this opportunity to share with you the overall income trends for the church with our four largest income areas. This year it is even more relevant as we have gone to a two-year budget cycle, and our next general conference is not until April 2020. Tithing As you will note in the following chart, our tithing income for 2018 was up 13% over the prior year with a 48% increase from 2013. We are grateful for all the dedication that has brought about this result. The increase at year end 2018 over expenses was $53,212, leaving a year-end total cash reserve balance on hand of $89,126. Oblation Oblation was down in 2018 as compared to the prior year by 14%. Our expenses were $55,987, compared to an income of $50,926. We, fortunately, had the reserves to cover the expenses, leaving a total cash reserve balance on hand of $57,528. Lunch Partners Lunch Partners income was down 7% when compared to the prior year, with income totaling $38,030 versus expenses that totaled $54,075. This was driven by repair and maintenance costs of over $12,000. Our Lunch Partners total cash reserve balance on hand ended the year at $75,681. Surplus Our income in 2018 was $273,387, up substantially compared to the prior year. After expenses, our year-end total cash reserves were $85,896. The expense side was driven by several factors, including extensive repairs to the headquarters roof along with the church video, the church Visitors Center, and a new church recording studio. Reserves Our total cash reserves on hand from all sources ended the year at $359,226.

by James Vun Cannon, Counselor to the First Presidency

Our church is a very busy place, and sometimes we do not realize that the church is working and providing ministry almost around the clock. The First Presidency desires to share the current direction of the church, different ministry projects, and all of the great things that are happening in the church with the Remnant Saints. In 2018 and early 2019, I, along with other general church officers, including Presiding Bishop Kevin Romer and President of the Twelve Apostles, Donald Burnett, visited all of the branches of the church in North America. I enjoyed immensely the opportunity to visit the saints and have been welcomed into many homes and churches. What a pleasure it has been to experience first-hand that we are a loving and inviting people. The saints shared so much with me: their personal testimonies, blessings and hopes, and desires for the kingdom. During the tour, I presented and reaffirmed the direction of the church, which is found in our mission statement: “The Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has been called into renewal to preach the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to all who will listen, and to prepare and gather a righteous people for the building of the Kingdom of God on earth, Zion.” We also covered the roadmap and strategy of the general church, which was followed by a discussion on each of the topics. Next, we covered some of the ministry/projects that the general church has undertaken. Then a special screening of the “Church Movie” was shown. The Visitors Center is located in the church headquarters building. The Visitors Center is an important aspect of the overall missionary work of the church. It is intended to be an ambassador for the church and to promote the fullness of the gospel. Along with the movie, there is a section of the Visitors Center that will promote the Book of Mormon with a life-sized projection of Nephi and Moroni telling visitors about the Book of Mormon. This follows the direction of the church “to preach the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to all who will listen.” When the Lord gave the Great Commission in Mark 16:14, “Go ye into all the world,” he set the goal for the church going forward. In order for us to reach the world with limited resources, social media is our first line of

8 | The Hastening Times | Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr 2019 contact for most people. However, most people who are seeking the gospel find our website. After they have spent time researching the website for our beliefs, they decide to contact the church on social media. Currently, we are in the process of rebuilding our church website into a repository of all the doctrinal beliefs of the church. Another project that we have completed is the church video studio. The studio is located on the third floor in the headquarters building. The purpose of the studio is to create missionary and doctrinal messages that can be seen on the website, social media, and video tracts. The studio will also be used for movie production, online classes, and the missionary preaching channel. Video tracts are another way of getting missionary doctrinal messages to the public instead of relying totally on printed tracts. A video tract is accessed by using a smartphone to scan a Quick Response Code (QR code) located on a paper tract (or anything that can be printed) to access the video tract movie or website. A QR code is a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode) developed in 1994 and has become widely used as a way to share information quickly. Along with the other technologies the church has been adopting to help in the ministry is Realm, the new church management software (CMS). Realm is a type of CMS software that helps with church administration, accounting, electronic giving, and communication. Members and priesthood are provided with a mobile app to send messages to the church, stake, district, congregation, branch, group, or members. Realm helps church staff manage their jobs, run reports, and accept all types of contributions from members. All of these features help with automating office and administrative tasks. The last things that were discussed were our “Great Things Happening” ministry efforts, both missionary and in the church. Home ministry is a vitally important part of ministry to the saints. The Center Place of Zion completed 225 home visits for 2018 which, according to the Bishopric, is five to six times more than we have ever done in the church. Our missionaries have been charged with growing all branches of the church to at least 50 members. The missionaries currently have four active missions: Florida, North Kansas City, Idaho, and Iowa. Southern Indiana Branch has added approximately 25 people in attendance to their branch. Some of the social media firsts include virtual cottage meetings, member affiliations, and a baptism. Brothers and sisters, we have been truly blessed this past year with all of the ministries that have occurred. Many saints and priesthood have made this possible through their holy desires, sacrifice, and holy works. May we yield our hearts to God so that 2019 will be even more fruitful.

Call for Sacrificial Offering

by Presiding Bishop W. Kevin Romer

Last April, during General Conference, we set a goal to open the church’s Visitors Center to the public in June of 2018. We have not met that goal due to various expenses that were not planned, including $35,000 for roof repairs to the headquarters building and an increase in property and casualty insurance costs of over $40,000. As we attempt to be fiscally responsible, it is our belief that to draw down our total cash reserves to complete the Visitors Center is not wise at this time. We have, however, been directed by revelation to spare no expense in our media outreach as this will become the face of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is time that we start telling our own story of God’s unique call and mission of this church.

“The Presidency, along with the Order of Bishops, would like to call for a special sacrificial offering to complete the church’s Visitors Center. Our goal is to raise $60,000 to complete the addition of a parking lot on the north side of the headquarters building. This will allow visitors off street parking, making their visit a better experience. The parking also allows for handicap access to the building for office staff, membership, and visitors.”

We would like to raise the funds by April 1, 2019. We would then look to begin work installing the parking lot during the months of April and May, allowing for a grand opening in June of 2019. We do not take lightly a call for a sacrificial offering over concerns about how such an offering could impact the other income areas of the church as well as the impact such a sacrificial offering has on the membership and their ability to be responsible stewards of God’s blessings. As is the practice of the church, any funds received beyond the goal would then become part of the storehouse account of the general church.

Planting Harvest

In May of 2018, I met with the young children who The harvest for each child varied: live at Bountiful, teaching them that God is a God of abundance. I met with the children and explained to them the value of the seed. I explained how God is a God of abundance and asked if they would be willing to each plant a seed and take care of it until the plant was fully grown. They all agreed. I then went on to explain that, if they took good care of it, one seed would grow into a plant that would grow from one to three ears of corn, and each ear could have over 200 seeds. That equates to a 200 to 1 return! Banks only offer .02% to 1% return at today’s rates. Whose plan is more abundant?

They would then give the remaining surplus, perhaps as much as 50% of what was left over after their “just wants,” to the storehouse to help those in need as well as the church. The 50% given to the church as seed will be used in the farming operations at Bountiful. To God be the glory as we learn to see God’s infinite abundance and learn to live as stewards over his creation.

Bountiful Prayer of Blessing and Dedication The following is a transcription of the prayer by Patriarch Carl VunCannon, Jr. “Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” Father, we have desired and dreamed for this day for many years. We gathered together on this spot early on in the Remnant Church to dedicate this land unto you and the building of this community. This day we not only dedicate this land, but we also dedicate this building unto you and the opportunities that we will have to meet you here and to allow your Spirit to teach us and to bring us to that spiritual height that we might someday be able to find ourselves in the midst of those heavenly beings that shall come as we have prepared ourselves on this earth to find ourselves worthy of that experience. Father, we come to bring a benediction upon this service, and pray that which has transpired here this morning might be written upon our hearts and upon our minds. We pray that there will be nothing that would stand in the way of fulfilling the purpose of this community, that our hearts might be open to each other and to thee, that we might find the true expression of brotherly love. May we be more concerned about our brothers and sisters and the children in this community than we are of ourselves, that we will work diligently to become of one heart and one mind and dwell in righteousness, that we might find the true meaning of “there are no poor among us.” Our Father, may your Spirit seal this day the dedication of this place upon all those who enter the doors to worship here. May they always find you here because of this dedication, as well as the preparation we make to come into this place to be in your presence. Father, we look upon these young families with young children, and with teenagers. We would offer a blessing upon them, that your Spirit might bless them with understanding and patience and love beyond anything they’ve ever known. May the children know that you are in their midst, and have the opportunity to sit at your feet and to learn of thee and thy love. May they rely heavily upon thee as they grow and mature, and have the opportunity to give themselves unto thee and present their gifts and talents to your people in Zion. Father, as a blessing of your love and your peace, of your joy of knowing that this community is accomplishing that which you have placed us on this earth to accomplish, may they prosper in those spiritual conditions and qualities that will allow this place to be a light shining upon a hill out over all mankind unto thee. This is the desire of our hearts, and this is the blessing that we pronounce and seal upon this congregation and upon this community. For we ask it all in the precious and worthy name of your son, Jesus, who came to save the world. May we also have that as our objective. In his name we pray. Amen.

Issue 77 | www.theremnantchurch.com | 29 Children’s Pages by Cindy Patience A Change of Heart

As they left for church, Ellie and her brother, Nathan, quarreled about who would ride up front with their mom. Sitting up front somehow made them feel important and special. But Mother told them to both sit in the back seat and to think about how they were behaving toward one another. They still were feeling angry and hurt all through the morning worship, and later they sat as far away from each other as they could during Sunday School.

Their class was studying the Book of Mormon. Their teacher told them about Ammon and his brothers who had taught the gospel to the Lamanites. Thousands of them changed their hearts and remained strong—firm in their faith in Jesus Christ. Because God forgave them, they did not want to commit sin again. They would rather die than kill another, so they chose to bury their weapons of war for peace. Not wanting to be like the Lamanites, they changed their name to the Anti-Ne- phi-Lehis.

The Lamanites started to attack them with swords because they had chosen to follow Christ. But the Anti-Nephi-Lehis did not fight back because they had buried their swords. Thousands were killed, but because the Anti-Nephi-Lehis had stood for what was right, the Lamanites repented and laid down their swords for peace, and many were converted. They had a “change of heart.” They no longer wanted to do evil but to do good, as others had before them. (Read Mosiah 3:3.)

After the story, the teacher talked to the children about the importance of having a change of heart when rebellious and angry thoughts become stronger than the love and forgiveness that Jesus taught us to have. She gave them each a paper sword on which to list the things that they knew they must get rid of to be as God wanted them to be. Then they were to bury their swords in a large pot of sand that the teacher had brought to the class. Afterwards, she gave them each a heart to write on about how they could change.

Ellie and Nathan thought about each other; they were ashamed and looked down at their feet. They didn’t want to be like the unrepentant Lamanites. They knew that it would not be an easy thing to keep from hurting each other again, but they also knew that they really loved each other. It was painful, but they wrote down their bad feelings on their swords and thoughtfully went to bury them in the sand pot.

On the way home, the car was peaceful. They both felt glad to sit together in the back seat and share the good things they had written on the hearts which they had made. What they had written made them feel so much happier than the bad things listed on the swords. But the swords were gone and buried. They both felt so relieved to have new and changed hearts!

Trace this heart onto white paper. Color the heart lightly if you wish or make a heart of your own with red construction paper. Use a paper punch to punch out the holes. Print at least one thing on each of the three sections that you can do to remember that you can always change your heart to become more like Jesus. Ex: Love, Forgive, Obey, Be Kind. Cut the heart into three pieces at the lines. Put short lengths of string, ribbon, or yarn through the holes and through the top. Now loosely tie the pieces together with a little space between pieces. Hang the mobile in your bedroom as a reminder of how God wants you to be.
