Waiting for the Barbarians (film) - Wikipedia There is a peace within The Magistrate's small and unspecified corner of the empire, one that emanates from the quiet way he carries himself and chooses to help the nomads instead of locking them up. He even spends his nights trying to understand more of their language. If any colonizer could create a harmonious Waiting for the Barbarians, built on empathy but still following hierarchy, The Magistrate has done it. That this one good apple is flabbergasted at how many bad apples are around him—the moment is meant to Waiting for the Barbarians a bold filmmaking choice, but instead it's ridiculous. The Magistrate, despite the heartfelt way he approaches the world, is a novelty. He is protective of her, especially as she details the cruelty she experienced. But the movie, which has J. You can admire what the movie and Rylance alike are doing, but the film continues to ring false. Robert Pattinson is also in this movie, and appears in this review in a similar fashion: toward the end, and barely of any importance. He plays an Waiting for the Barbarians officer to Colonel Joll who sometimes scowls and sometimes screams, and Waiting for the Barbarians little else. But there is a clear sense of the movie trying to squeeze him into shots with Depp, or include cutaways shots despite Pattinson having nothing to say. Working again with the kind of indie auteur he gravitated towards before his year run as a blockbuster star, the actor makes a meal of some of his lines here, but he seems positively relaxed next to Pattinson, playing a variation on the diabolical theme. Pattinson is Waiting for the Barbarians puzzle. Such a revelation in Good Timeand charismatically enigmatic in The Lost City of Zhe just Waiting for the Barbarians often looks uncomfortable. His performance here is somehow both stiff and overarticulated. His deepening affection for her leads him into the desert to return the girl to her people, and some of the widescreen compositions Waiting for the Barbarians this section — of stucco parapets silhouetted against a darkening blue sky, of riders ringed by bands of sun-gold at dusk — have a startling beauty. His rejection by the woman he loves but failed to protect presages a more pointed reckoning, and the magistrate is left, in the end, holding the bag. The barbarians are us, and the wait is over. • The Films of Ciro Guerra and the Making of Cosmopolitan Spaces in Colombian Cinema
The Films of Ciro Guerra and the Making of Cosmopolitan Spaces in Colombian Cinema Maria Luna and Philippe Meers Abstract: This article proposes to use the concept of “cosmopolitan cinematic margins” to analyse the paradoxical meeting of the cosmopolitan meaning and discourses of Ciro Guerra’s Colombian films and the spatial restrictions and immobility of the rural and remote places in which they are set. Such areas as seen on screen are usually interpreted by urban audiences as exotic locations, independently of their actual distance from cities. The article explores how films that, at first sight, show images of marginal and remote places like the Colombian Amazonian Jungle, when inserted into a global context—such as the hierarchical system of international film festivals—become symbols of cosmopolitan cinematic margins, and represent a country in the global spaces that legitimise the importance of that country’s film production. The cosmopolitan cinematic margins in the films of Guerra are then strategically situated in environments of global mobility and international prestige. Introduction The three feature films directed thus far by Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra— Wandering Shadows (La sombra del caminante, 2004), The Wind Journeys (Los viajes del viento, 2009) and Embrace of the Serpent (El abrazo de la serpiente, 2015)— were all produced by the independent production house Ciudad Lunar. They show the dynamics and tensions in the making of a cosmopolitan cinematic space within a peripheral cinema or “small cinema”, expressions that will be used in this article to remark the particular position of the cinemas of the “remaining countries” beyond the dominant production of Argentina, Mexico and Brazil—also known as “the big three” (Falicov and Middents 115).

  • Around the World in 14 Films: the Berlin Festival of Festivals
Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media no. 17, 2019, pp. 270–274 DOI: https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.17.27 Around the World in 14 Films: The Berlin Festival of Festivals Claudia Kotte There is no shortage of film festivals in Berlin. From the Arab Film Festival, Alfilm to filmPOLSKA and the Jewish Film Festival to the ZEBRA poetry film festival, the city hosts more than eighty film festivals every year—not to forget the Berlinale, a cinematic marathon with almost four hundred films in ten days. While that choice may be overwhelming for most, Berlin has a smaller and lesser known festival that is possibly even more worth attending: a global cinematic trip called Around the World in 14 Films. Established in 2006, the festival aims to wrap up the year’s cinematic output with a selection of fourteen films from fourteen different countries. The festival’s 13th edition, held between 22 November and 1 December 2018, ended with a record number of six thousand visitors. For the first time in its history, the festival’s title proved slightly misleading, for in addition to the fourteen films selected from international festivals, the organisers presented a German film not yet released in Germany (A Winter’s Tale [Wintermärchen], Jan Bonny, 2018), a Sundance night featuring The Tale (Jennifer Fox, 2018) and Wildlife (Paul Dano, 2018), homages to Jean-Luc Godard and Yorgos Lanthimos as well as four films from the Berlinale World Cinema Fund. Seven out of the fourteen plus thirteen films were made by women. All of them stood out at the festivals in Cannes, Venice, Locarno, Sundance and Toronto.

Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Whenever I looked at a map of my country, I was overwhelmed by great uncertainty. Half of it was an unknown territory, a green sea, of which I knew nothing.

The film stars Academy Award Winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Academy Award Nominee Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean and Finding Neverland), Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse and the up-coming Tenet), Gana Bayarsaikhan (Ex Machina), and Greta Scacchi (The Girl in the Fog). The Magistrate (Mark Rylance) of an isolated frontier settlement on the border of an unnamed empire looks forward to an easy retirement until the arrival of Colonel Joll (Johnny Depp), whose task it is to re- port on the activities of the ‘barbarians’ and on the security situation on the border. Joll conducts a series of ruthless interrogations, which leads the Magistrate to question his loyalty to the empire. WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS was directed by Ciro Guerra and written by Nobel Prize winning au- thor J.M. Coetzee, who adapted the screenplay from his own novel. Two-time Academy Award winner Chris Menges was the cinematographer.
