ALFRED SHARP First edition, 1921 PREFACE Canon Overton, in his Life in the English Church, 1660- ' 1714, says that there is no doubt that John Wesley intended his Societies to be an exact repetition of what was done by Beveridge, Horneck, and Smythies sixty-two years before.' ' He continues : How it was that the Methodist Societies took a different course is a very interesting, and, to a church- man, a very sad question.' In this book I have given descrip- tions of the first Rehgious Societies, and have shown their development under the influence of Dr. Woodward and John Wesley. From those descriptions my readers wiU be able to judge the accuracy of Canon Overton's statement concern- ing John Wesley's intentions. There can be no doubt, how- ' ' ever, that the relationship between the Religious Societies ' ' and the United Societies of the People called Methodists was so close that the latter cannot be understood without an intimate knowledge of the former. In writing this book, I have kept the Methodist Church in view. My eyes have been fixed on John Wesley and the England in which his greatest work was done. We can never understand the revival of religion which glorified the eighteenth century until we see Wesley as he wls, and get rid of the false impressions created by writers who have had an imperfect acquaintance with him and his evangelistic work. -

Kelly). The collection represents the convergence of British Victorian interests in Methodistica and scrapbooking. To the original scrapbooks Bishop Frederick DeLand Leete added materials by and about ten additional twentieth-century Conference presidents. It is now all in ruins ; only a small dwelling-house is built on one part of it. The situation of it is exceeding fine, on the side of a steep mountain, hanging over a river, from which another mountain rises, equally steep, and clothed with wood. At a little distance is the chapel, which is in perfect preservation, both within and without. I should never have thought it had belonged to any one less than a sovereign prince ! the inside being far more elegantly wrought with variety of Scripture histories in stone-work, than I believe can be found again in Scotland ; perhaps not in all England. The article described the experiences of Zechariah Y ewdall (who laboured as a Methodist preacher from 1779 to 183o), as recorded in the two volumes of his manuscript diary. The courtesy of the Connexional Editor has enabled me to peruse these interesting volumes at leisure. They have been of interest :to me chiefly on account of the record they give of Yewdall's labours in Scotland, and particularly in connection with the origin of the Society at Dalkeith. -

260 book reviews Paul Kléber Monod Solomon’s Secret Arts: The Occult in the Age of Enlightenment, New Haven and London: Yale University Press 2013. x + 430 pp. isbn 978-0-300-12358-6. This is an ambitious book. Monod’s subject is the occult, by which he means ‘a type of thinking expressed either in writing or in action, that allowed the boundary between the natural and the supernatural to be crossed by the ac- tions of human beings’ (p. 5). Although he cites the work of Antoine Faivre, Wouter Hanegraaff and others, readers of Aries will doubtless be interested to learn Monod’s reasoning for using the term occult in preference to West- ern esotericism. In short, while acknowledging the important contribution of the ‘esoteric approach’ he also highlights its perceived ‘shortcomings’, namely a tendency to regard relevant texts as ‘comprising a discrete and largely self- referential intellectual tradition, hermetically sealed so as to ward off the taint of other forms of thought, not to mention social trends and popular practices’. Moreover, ‘scholars of esoteric religion’ apparently ‘have a tendency to inter- pret whatever they are studying with the greatest seriousness, so that hucksters and charlatans turn into philosophers, and minor references in obscure eso- teric works take on labyrinthine significances’ (p. 10). In practice, what Monod understands here as the occult is largely restricted to alchemy, astrology and rit- ual magic; a maelstrom which, among other things, pulled in readers of Hermes Trismegistus, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, Paracelsus, Jacob Boehme and the Kabbalah, outwardly respectable scientists and anti-Trinitarians (sometimes one and the same); Philadelphians; French Prophets; Freemasons; students of Ancient Britain and the Druids; cunning folk; authors of popular Gothic novels; certain followers of Emmanuel Swedenborg; Neoplatonists; advocates of Ani- mal magnetism; and Judaized millenarians. -

The thesis describes empirical, exploratory research into the nature, operant practice and understanding of superintendency which was focused on the Newcastle upon Tyne District of the Methodist Church during 2011-2012. -

John Wesley - Evangelist: Chapter 3 Oxford: University Life Of this time Wesley writes, 'In the year 1729, I began not only to read, but to study the Bible, as the one, the only standard of truth, and the only model of pure religion. Hence I saw, in a clearer and clearer light, the indispensable necessity of having the mind which was in Christ, and of walking as Christ also walked; even of having, not some part only, but all the mind which was in Him; and of walking as He walked, not only in many or in most respects, but in all things. And this was the light, wherein at this time I generally considered religion, as a uniform following of Christ, an entire inward and outward conformity to our Master. Nor was I afraid of anything more, than of bending this rule to the experience of myself, or of other men; of allowing myself in any way the least disconformity to our grand Exemplar.' In obedience to the summons he had received from Dr. Morley, Rector of Lincoln College, Wadelt returned to Oxford to take pupils, eleven of whom were at once placed under his care. Here he found a nascent Methodist society, though as yet without the definite name, consisting of Charles and two companions, to whom he immediately joined himself, and by whom he was speedily recognized as their spiritual leader. Under his guidance the little community soon became the instrument of a spiritual propaganda, and gradually increased in number and influence—a little seed that afterwards was to become a great tree. -

···------- Methodist History, 30:3 (April 1992) JOHN BENNET: "SERVANT OF JESUS CHRIST IN THE WORKE OF THE GOSPEL" S. R. VALENTINE Many scholars, particularly those within Methodism, have either ig nored John Bennet or dismissed him as being "an incorrigible Dissenter." 1 Mainly because of his involvement with Grace Murray, a woman appar ently already engaged to John Wesley himself, those with a denomina tional axe to grind have branded Bennet as "a treacherous, unfriendly man."2 Others, sometimes in a highly romanticized fashion, have presented Bennet as a cowardly figure, suffering from a "sensitive nervous tempera ment," in contrast to John Wesley, "in all his virile frame." 3 After almost two hundred fifty years of neglect by ecclesiastical scholarship, Bennet is still regarded by some as "the first authentic Methodist agitator. " 4 However, if we peer through the considerable mist of prejudice which has gathered around the name of Bennet since his death in 1759, it becomes clear that this traditional image hardly does credit to the historical details of Bennet's life. As certain writers have stated, not only was he "one of Wesley's most responsible helpers in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Derby shire," 5 but :Bennet has also been described as "the most outstanding of Wesley's young preachers." 6 His usefulness as an itinerant evangelist is further evidenced in a remark made by Charles Wesley when he stated concerning Bennet: "there is not one of all our labourers whom I esteem and love or with whom I am more united." 7 Such a weight of both con temporary and recent testimony supports the designation of Bennet as "the apostle of the Northwest. -

BOWMER, M.A., B.D., Ph.D. Volume XXXIX October 1973 CAPTAIN THOMAS WEBB RETURNS To John Street Church, New York N Sunday, 3rd June 1973, Captain Thomas Webb returned to John Street United Methodist church, New York, in the 0 form of two physical trophies closely tied in to the concluding years of his life. The first was the memorial tablet which had been mounted in Portland Chapel, Bristol, soon after his death. The other was the original pastel portrait executed by Lewis Vasiet a few years before the Captain's decease.1 During his last years Thomas \V ebb lived in Bristol. He and his wife were very active in Methodist affairs-members of the society at John Wesley's chapel in the heart of the city-" The New Room in the Horsefair ".2 They appear to have resided in or near Portland Avenue, in the south·western sector of the city. The Captain be came convinced that a strong new society should be organized in the vicinity, and that a chapel could be provided for their worship. He gave himself sedulously to the project, securing an excellent site and erecting a chapel in Portland Place, although he himself could no longer make the financial contribution that his heart could have wished.8 Captain Webb died on 2oth December 1796, and was buried in Portland Chapel-in a vault below the recess in the sanctuary where stood the communion table. Kids today have no shortage of heroes. From Hollywood celebrities, to music artists and sports figures, it would seem that there are plenty of heroes to go around. However, the heroes offered by popular culture are teaching children that physical perfection, financial success, and fame are the most important goals in life. The morals and values presented are often in direct opposition to the standards parents want to pass on to their children. So, while there is no shortage of heroes, there is a dreadful shortage of heroes worth emulating.
