Complexity in the Comic and Graphic Novel Medium: Inquiry Through Bestselling Batman Stories PAUL A. CRUTCHER DAPTATIONS OF GRAPHIC NOVELS AND COMICS FOR MAJOR MOTION pictures, TV programs, and video games in just the last five Ayears are certainly compelling, and include the X-Men, Wol- verine, Hulk, Punisher, Iron Man, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Watchmen, 300, 30 Days of Night, Wanted, The Surrogates, Kick-Ass, The Losers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and more. Nevertheless, how many of the people consuming those products would visit a comic book shop, understand comics and graphic novels as sophisticated, see them as valid and significant for serious criticism and scholarship, or prefer or appreciate the medium over these film, TV, and game adaptations? Similarly, in what ways is the medium complex according to its ad- vocates, and in what ways do we see that complexity in Batman graphic novels? Recent and seminal work done to validate the comics and graphic novel medium includes Rocco Versaci’s This Book Contains Graphic Language, Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, and Douglas Wolk’s Reading Comics. Arguments from these and other scholars and writers suggest that significant graphic novels about the Batman, one of the most popular and iconic characters ever produced—including Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley’s Dark Knight Returns, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum, and Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Killing Joke—can provide unique complexity not found in prose-based novels and traditional films. From Folktale to Fantasy A Recipe-Based Approach to Creative Writing Michael Fox ABSTRACT In an environment of increasing strategies for creative writing “lessons” with varying degrees of constraints – ideas like the writing prompt, fash fction, and “uncreative” writing – one overlooked idea is to work with folktale types and motifs in order to create a story outline. Tis article sketches how such a lesson might be constructed, beginning with the selection of a tale type for the broad arc of the story, then moving to the range of individual motifs which might be available to populate that arc. Advanced students might further consider using the parallel and chiastic structures of folktale to sophisticate their outline. Te example used here – and suggested for use – is a folktale which informs both Beowulf and Te Hobbit and which, therefore, is likely at least to a certain extent to be familiar to many writers. Even if the outline which this exercise gen- erates were never used to write a full story, the process remains useful in thinking about the building blocks of story and traditional structures such as the archetypal “Hero’s Journey.” Writing in Practice 131 Introduction If the terms “motif” and “folktale” are unfamiliar, I am working with the following defnitions: a motif, I teach on the Writing side of a Department in terms of folklore, is “the smallest element in a tale of English and Writing Studies. To achieve this, the study postulates two contexts in stand-up joking stories: context of the joke and context in the joke. The context of the joke, which is inflexible, embodies the collective beliefs of stand-up comedians and their audience, while the context in the joke, which is dynamic, is manifested by joking stories and it is made up of the joke utterance, participants in the joke and activity/situation in the joke. In any routine, the context of the joke interacts with the context in the joke and vice versa. For analytical purpose, the study derives data from the routines of male and female Nigerian stand-up comedians. The analysis reveals that stand-up comedians perform discourse types, which are specific communicative acts in the context of the joke, such as greeting/salutation, reporting and informing, which bifurcates into self- praising and self denigrating. Keywords: discourse types; stand-up comedy; contexts; jokes. 1. Introduction Humour and laughter have been described as cultural universal (Oring 2003). According to Schwarz (2010), humour represents a central aspect of everyday conversations and all humans participate in humorous speech and behaviour. This is why humour, together with its attendant effect- laughter, has been investigated in the field of linguistics and other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, sociology and anthropology. -

The two phenomena under scrutiny, K\SHUXQGHUVWDQGLQJ and PLVXQGHUVWDQGLQJ, categorize as responsive conversational turns as they connect to a previously made utterance. Whereas hyper-understanding revolves around a speaker’s ability to exploit potential weak spots in a previous speaker’s utterance by playfully echoing that utterance while simultaneously reversing the initially intended interpretation, misunderstanding involves a genuine misinterpretation of a previous utterance by a character in the fictional world. Both cases, however, hinge on the differentiation of viewpoints, yielding a layered discourse representation. A corpus study based on the British television series %ODFNDGGHU reveals which pivot elements can serve as a trigger for hyper- and misunderstanding. Common to all instances, it is argued, is a mechanism ofILJXUHJURXQG UHYHUVDO. Key words: interactional humor, hyper-understanding, misunderstanding, layering, mental spaces, figure-ground reversal 2 ,QWURGXFWLRQ Recent studies in pragmatics (see e.g. Attardo 2003) have shown a renewed interest in humor as a valuable topic of interdisciplinary research. More specifically, these studies have extended the traditional focus of humor research on jokes to include longer narrative texts (Attardo 2001a, Triezenberg 2004) and conversational data (Boxer and Cortés-Conde 1997, Hay 2001, Kotthoff 2003, Norrick 2003, Antonopoulou and Sifianou 2003, Archakis and Tsakona 2005). New data from conversation analysis, text linguistics and discourse psychology present significant challenges to linguistic humor theories like the General Theory of Verbal Humor (Attardo 1994, 2001a), and call for (sometimes major) revisions. -

The structure of pantomime has not changed in a hundred years, but allows for local creativity to work within its framework to be both family entertainment and social satire. This basic structure is founded on a children’s story like Puss’n’boots or Cinderella. The story and character types remain the same; but the community can add their own jokes and commentary to make the play relevant to themselves and their community. What is added by the community says a lot about who they are and what they care about. The company Price-Waterhouse-Coopers produces their pantomime as management training and team building while engaging the community. The Basel Swiss panto raises money for African Charities. The Maplewood, NJ panto raises money for the homeless and the Jaguar Charity panto in Birmingham performs to disadvantaged children and adults. The productions can be extravagant or threadbare, but share the same goal of raising cheer and goodwill to the benefit of the community. What is it, then, about panto that brings a community together in such civic mindedness? Women in Comedy
WOMEN IN COMEDY BACKGROUND: MAKERS: Women In Comedy tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of 70s sitcoms like Norman Lear’s Maude to the groundbreaking women of the 1980s American comedy club boom and building to today’s multifaceted landscape. Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and the women of Saturday Night Live are often more famous than their male counterparts, but it didn’t start out that way. Early breakout female comics had to keep their jokes within the safe context of marriage, motherhood, and a man’s world. But they still found a way to be subversive. As Joan Rivers puts it, “I was furious about having to get married… It all comes out on stage. So that’s what I do onstage. I really tell them the truth.” Soon comedy became a vehicle for women to take on some of the most sensitive and controversial issues of the day. On television in the 1960s, entertainers like Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore illuminated the core issues of feminism with humor that was both sly and truthful. But it took a powerful male producer to bring the most provocative feminist characters onto the screen. Maude, who Lear introduced to audiences in 1971, was a feminist firebrand on her fourth husband, strong and independent with a razor sharp wit. “When Maude was on the air,” Lear tells us, “I used to get letters from the First Lady, Betty Ford…. And she always signed every letter ‘Maude’s #1 fan’.” When Maude chose to have an abortion at 47, religious groups protested, but the episode was watched by 65 million Americans.
