[1] Contents. Life [ edit | edit source ] Youth and education [ edit | edit source ] Siegel was born in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of Charlotte Lucille (Chance) and Frederick William Siegel. [1] After graduating from Arlington High School in 1957, he went to Dennison University for 2 years, then switched to Wheaton College, where he earned a B.A. in 1961. He then went to on a Gilman fellowship, and earned an M.A. in writing. [1] After a brief period chairing the English department at Trinity College, Siegel attended Harvard University, where he studied under Robert Lowell, and where he earned a Ph.D. in English literature. [1] Career [ edit | edit source ] Siegel was a professor of English at , , and Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. He directed the graduate creative writing program for 23 years at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, from which he retired as professor emeritus of English. [1] He lived in Maine, where he died of cancer in December 2012. [1] Recognition [ edit | edit source ] His poetry received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, Poetry , and Transatlantic Review , and was nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize.
