1576–James Burbage built the first public theater and called it the Theater Other theaters–the Rose, the Swan, the Globe The Globe is the most famous because it was the theater most closely associated with Shakespeare. Admission cost one penny. Held about 3,000 spectators Painted brightly with colorful tapestries Authorities closed the theaters during plague epidemics. The Globe burned down in 1613.
