Strong circumstantial evidence is presented for a case of predation of a Grey Goshawk Accipiter novaehollandiae by a Powerful Owl Ninox strenua along Cattai Creek in the Mitchell Park section of Cattai National Park in the Greater Sydney region, New South Wales, in October 2017. Evidence includes the feathery remains of a Grey Goshawk originating from a plucking post on the forest floor, located within an active Powerful Owl roosting site indicated by Powerful Owl feathers, pellets and whitewash. Although the Powerful Owl is known to prey on large birds, our observations constitute the first evidence of predation of a Grey Goshawk by a Powerful Owl. Introduction On 15 October 2017, among the spiderwort on the forest floor, we detected pluckings over an area of ~50 cm diameter The Powerful Owl Ninox strenua predominantly feeds that contained many diagnostic feathers (Figure 1). on arboreal mammals and, to a lesser extent, birds (e.g. No larger remains such as claws, wingtips or breastbone Higgins 1999; Debus 2009; Fitzsimons & Rose 2010; were present. The spiderwort had already formed new Olsen et al. 2011; Bilney 2013a,b). Birds included in its shoots, ~10 cm long, growing through the layer of feathers, diet are typically mid- to large-sized birds (50–1000 g), with suggesting that these remains had been present on the known prey including several cockatoo and corvid species forest floor for at least 1 week. -

Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. AUSTRALIA: TASMANIA AND THE ORANGE- BELLIED PARROT 24 – 29 OCTOBER 2020 24 – 29 OCTOBER 2021 The handsome Orange-bellied Parrot is the primary target on this tour. www.birdingecotours.com [email protected] 2 | ITINERARY Australia: Tasmania and the Orange-bellied Parrot Adjoined to the mainland until the end of the last glacial period about ten thousand years ago, Tasmania is both geographically and genetically isolated from Australia. Through the millennia this island has developed its own unique set of plants and animals, including twelve avian endemics that include Forty-spotted Pardalote, Green Rosella, and Strong-billed Honeyeater. Beyond the endemics Tasmania also harbors several species which winter on the mainland and breed on Tasmania, such as Swift Parrot and Orange-bellied Parrot. These two breeding endemics are globally Critically Endangered (IUCN) and major targets on this tour. Forty-spotted Pardalote is one of the Tasmanian endemics we will target on this tour. Our search for the endemics and breeding specialties of Tasmania is set within a stunning backdrop of rugged coastlines, tall evergreen sclerophyll forests, alpine heathlands, and cool temperate rainforests, undoubtedly enriching our experience here. In addition, due to the lack of foxes many marsupials are notably more numerous in Tasmania, and we should be able to observe several of these unique animals during our stay. For those wishing to continue exploring Australia, this tour can be combined with our set of Australia tours: Australia: from the Outback to the Wet Tropics, Australia: Top End Birding, and Australia: Southwest Specialties. All four Australia tours could be combined. We can also arrange other extensions (e.g., sightseeing trips to Sydney, Uluru, etc., and pelagic trips). -

Cooper c aDepartment of Zoology, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-7617, USA bDepartment of Zoology, University of New England, Armidale, NSW 2351, Australia cDepartment of Biology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0406, USA Received 4 April 1998; received in revised form 22 October 1998; accepted 5 January 1999 Abstract We attempted to identify the mechanisms responsible for adverse eects of habitat fragmentation on brown treecreepers (Cli- macteris picumnus) inhabiting eucalyptus woodland in northeastern New South Wales, Australia by comparing demography and foraging ecology of birds in highly fragmented and relatively unfragmented landscapes. In particular, we investigated three possi- bilities, disrupted dispersal due to patch isolation, reduced fecundity due to elevated nest predation, and reduced food availability due to habitat degradation. Nesting success was high in both highly fragmented and less fragmented habitat. Of ®rst nests, 88% were successful, and 60% of successful groups attempted a second brood. However, there were many more groups in the more fragmented habitat than in the less fragmented habitat that lacked a female for most or all of the breeding season, and thus did not attempt nesting (64% vs 13%). In both the more fragmented and the less fragmented habitat, both males and females spent about 70% of their time foraging and 65% of their foraging time on the ground. We reject reduced fecundity in fragmented habitat as an explanation of adverse eects of habitat fragmentation on brown treecreepers. -

1 Hollow Using Species List & Nest Box Designs For the High Country Bushfire Zones Compiled by Alice McGlashan Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nestboxtales/ Website: www.nestboxtales.com Sharing stories and knowledge about nest boxes for Australian native animals to encourage everyone to improve habitat for wildlife. 2 Background Studies across Australia have found that fire tends to reduce the number of hollows in an ecosystem for the short to medium term (0-50+ years). The hotter and more damaging the fire, the greater the loss of tree hollows. Consider an old, large, wizened, partially dead tree with many small to large sized hollows, being somewhat of an apartment block for hollow using wildlife. Trees such as these do not tend to survive very destructive bushfires, such as those that have occurred during this bushfire season (summer 2019-20) These same studies have found that hollow using species don’t initially return to badly burnt areas, and when they do, the numbers are extremely low compared to before the fire. By comparison, non-hollow using species generally bounce back relatively quickly and in a few years are similar in numbers to those pre-fire. This provides an indication that it is likely to be the lack of hollows, rather than food sources and habitat other than tree hollows, that are the limiting factor for the return of hollow using species to recently burnt areas. Aside: the studies to date have been on smaller patch burns or areas that are dwarfed in size by the vast expanses of forests burnt, particularly in the Eastern states of Australia during the bushfire season of 2019-20. -

Water is a precious resource in the Australian deserts, so watering holes like this one near Georgetown are incredible places for concentrating wildlife. Two of our most bird diverse excursions were on our mornings in this region. Photo by guide Doug Gochfeld. Australia. A voyage to the land of Oz is guaranteed to be filled with novelty and wonder, regardless of whether we’ve been to the country previously. This was true for our group this year, with everyone coming away awed and excited by any number of a litany of great experiences, whether they had already been in the country for three weeks or were beginning their Aussie journey in Darwin. Given the far-flung locales we visit, this itinerary often provides the full spectrum of weather, and this year that was true to the extreme. The drought which had gripped much of Australia for months on end was still in full effect upon our arrival at Darwin in the steamy Top End, and Georgetown was equally hot, though about as dry as Darwin was humid. The warmth persisted along the Queensland coast in Cairns, while weather on the Atherton Tablelands and at Lamington National Park was mild and quite pleasant, a prelude to the pendulum swinging the other way. During our final hours below O’Reilly’s, a system came through bringing with it strong winds (and a brush fire warning that unfortunately turned out all too prescient). -

On Part II of our Grand Australia tour, we were joined by six new participants. We had a magnificent start finding a handsome male Koala in near record time, and he posed well for us. With friend Duncan in the “monster bus” named “Vince,” we birded through the Kerry Valley and the country towns of Beaudesert and Canungra. Visiting several sites, we soon racked up a bird list of some 90 species with highlights including two Black-necked Storks, a Swamp Harrier, a Comb-crested Jacana male attending recently fledged chicks, a single Latham’s Snipe, colorful Scaly-breasted Lorikeets and Pale-headed Rosellas, a pair of obliging Speckled Warblers, beautiful Scarlet Myzomela and much more. It had been raining heavily at O’Reilly’s for nearly a fortnight, and our arrival was exquisitely timed for a break in the gloom as blue sky started to dominate. Pretty-faced Wallaby was a good marsupial, and at lunch we were joined by a spectacular male Eastern Water Dragon. Before breakfast we wandered along the trail system adjacent to the lodge and were joined by many new birds providing unbelievable close views and photographic chances. Wonga Pigeon and Bassian Thrush were two immediate good sightings followed closely by Albert’s Lyrebird, female Paradise Riflebird, Green Catbird, Regent Bowerbird, Australian Logrunner, three species of scrubwren, and a male Rose Robin amongst others.
