A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Dear Friar Family, Last year I thanked you for helping us lay the foundation for success in Friartown. This year we became champions. In November our women’s cross country team won the National Championship under the outstanding leadership of National Coach of the Year, Ray Treacy. Four months later our men’s basketball team took the floor at Madison Square Garden and captured the BIG EAST Championship for only the second time in the history of the College. There is tremendous excitement surrounding our programs and our success has brought national attention to Providence College. This can be seen through our partnership with Fox Sports 1 where every men’s basketball game is broadcast live on national television and on campus where in its first season since being renovated, Schneider Arena has become one of the toughest places in the nation to play. Championship people make championship organizations and none of this would be possible without your generous support. Thanks to you, we set a new fundraising record and used that money to provide our student-athletes with the resources to compete at the highest level. FRIARS FOREVER ANNUAL ATHLETIC REPORT 2013 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

On Friday, April 11, 2014, Providence College Athletics held a ribbon cutting ceremony to recognize the official opening of the track that is named after the legendary Friar head coach, Ray Treacy ‘82. The Ray Treacy Track is located on Hendricken Field and will serve as the home of the Providence College men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams. The new complex has a six-lane lane track with eight-lane straightaways, which encompasses a turf field. The turf field can be used for soccer, rugby and other intramural sports. The complex has seating for more than 300 fans, as well as a press box and a scoreboard. “The new track and field complex is an important addition to our program,” Providence College Director of Track and Cross Country Operations Ray Treacy said. “Not only will it benefit the track and field team, but the entire Providence College community will have use of this great facility. This track will allow us to continue competing at the highest level of NCAA competition.”

Guthrie, IV VISION CUP GOLF TOURNAMENTS 2014 COX SPORTS FRIAR GOLF CLASSIC On October 7, 2013 and May 15, 2014, the Providence College men’s The 2014 Cox Sports Friar Golf Classic raised over $130,000 for Friar basketball Vision Team held its Annual Vision Cup golf tournaments Athletics. The event serves as the athletic department’s primary fundraiser at Newport Country Club in Newport, RI and The Stanwich Club in and proceeds benefit Providence College’s 330 student-athletes through Greenwich, CT. The sold out events were both a tremendous success for academic scholarships and support. The funds from the event go to the the men’s basketball program, raising over $175,000. The funds from the Friars Forever Athletic Fund, which also seeks to improve Providence events will help to fund charter flights for the upcoming season. College’s athletic facilities.

1ST ANNUAL SOFTBALL AND VOLLEYBALL BOWLING CLASSIC The event took place at East Providence Lanes in Rumford, RI, where there were over 240 alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends in attendance. The event raised $13,000, a fundraising record for both teams. The Funds from the event will benefit both the softball and volleyball programs along with the Allan Baker ‘74 Student-Athlete Memorial Scholarship Fund, in honor of former Friar great Allan Baker ‘74, `06P.

2013 SHAWMUT DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION MEN’S ICE HOCKEY GOLF REUNION Over 115 golfers participated in the golf tournament at Pawtucket Country Club in Pawtucket, RI. The event raised a record $50,000 for the men’s ice hockey program.

1964 MEN’S ICE HOCKEY 50 YEAR REUNION Providence College honored the 1963-1964 hockey team that won the 1964 ECAC Championship and became the first in program history to advance to the NCAA Frozen Four. The team was honored at halftime of the men’s basketball game against DePaul and also had an on-ice ceremony between the first and second periods of the men’s ice hockey game against Notre Dame.

FRIARS VS. KENTUCKY AT THE BARCLAYS CENTER The Friar men’s basketball team traveled to Brooklyn, NY on Sunday, December 1, 2013, to take on the Kentucky Wildcats at the Barclays Center. For the Friars, it marked their second meeting all-time against the Wildcats. The Friars will travel down to Rupp Arena in Kentucky this upcoming season for a rematch with the Wildcats, who lost in the National Championship game this past year.

FROZEN FENWAY The No. 4/5 ranked Providence College men’s hockey team skated to 1-1 overtime tie against Merrimack in a non-conference game at Fenway Park on Saturday, Jan. 4 as part of Citi Frozen Fenway 2014. Playing in the third installment of Frozen Fenway, the Friars and Warriors each made their first appearances in the event. Providence debuted throwback uniforms in honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1963-64 Friar squad that won the ECAC Championship and advanced to the Frozen Four, marking the first Providence team to win a conference title and advance to the NCAA Tournament. FRIARS FOREVER ANNUAL ATHLETIC REPORT 2014 BIG EAST CHAMPIONS The Providence College men’s basketball team was crowned the BIG EAST Tournament Champion by defeating No. 14 Creighton, 65-58, in the Championship Game, on Saturday, March 15 at Madison Square Garden. Senior Bryce Cotton was named the BIG EAST Championship’s Most Outstanding Player. It was Providence’s second BIG EAST Tournament Championship in the 35-year history of the BIG EAST. The Friars also captured the title in 1994, when they defeated Georgetown on March 13, 1994. With the Championship win, the Friars earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament as the No. 11 seed where they took on sixth-seeded North Carolina in San Antonio, Texas. The Friars made their 16th appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament and its first appearance since 2004.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY YOUTH CLINIC MEN’S LACROSSE HELPS OUT AT NORTH The Providence College men’s ice hockey team hosted its third annual KINGSTOWN YOUTH CLINIC outdoor youth clinic at the Providence Rink at the Bank of America City The Providence College men’s lacrosse team volunteered their time at the North Center in downtown Providence on Sunday, Jan. 12. Head Coach Nate Kingstown Youth Clinic on Friday, November 22, 2013. Head Coach Chris Leaman and the team instructed over 50 participants. Gabrielli and the team instructed over 40 participants at the clinic that day.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK VOLUNTEERS WITH THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SWIM ACROSS AMERICA Members of the Providence College The men’s and women’s cross country and track teams volunteered at the swimming and diving program, Coach John O’Neill and wife Cindy all St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor 5k. ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS 163 Providence College student-athletes were named to the annual BIG EAST All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the honor, a student must have competed in a BIG EAST sponsored sport while attaining a minimum GPA of 3.0. 14 Student-athletes from the men’s and women’s ice hockey programs were named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete had to achieve a GPA of 3.0 or better to be named with this honor.

10 Friar volleyball players were named to the America East Fall Honor Roll. Student-athletes had to earn a GPA of 3.0 or better.

9 Programs finished with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above during both the Spring and Fall semesters.

FRIARS FOREVER ANNUAL ATHLETIC REPORT SCHNEIDER ARENA

Providence College Athletics celebrated the grand re-opening of Schneider Arena on Friday, September 27. The renovation project of 40-year old Schneider Arena was completed in just less than eight months and has transformed the home of the Friar men’s and women’s ice hockey teams into one of the finest on-campus hockey facilities in the nation. The renovation and 30,000 square-foot addition include a new atrium, ticket office, concession stands, coaches offices, shooting room, locker rooms, meeting rooms, athletic training room, press box, five luxury suites, dasher boards, glass, video board, video ribbon boards, scoreboards, a renovated Friends of Friar Room and a strength and conditioning facility. “It has always been my goal for our student-athletes and coaches to compete in the finest athletic facilities in the nation,” Athletics Director Bob Driscoll said. “We have been working towards that goal for the last 10 years. Through the generous support of Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P ‘80 and our wonderful donors we have been able to enhance the experience of our student-athletes and transform Friartown into a top-notch Division I athletic institution.” “The new building is tremendous,” Providence College men’s hockey Head Coach Nate Leaman said. “In renovating Schneider Arena, we wanted to create the best building possible in which to develop our players. We also wanted to provide a great fan experience and we have exceeded those goals.”

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY NCAA TOURNAMENT RUN The Friars returned to the NCAA Tournament this year for the first time since 2001 and were seeded third in the East Regional bracket. Providence faced off with second-seeded Quinnipiac on Friday, March 28th at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. The Friars advanced to the East Regional final by beating Quinnipiac 4-0 in dominating fashion. They fell to the eventual national champion, Union College, 3-1 in the regional final. WORLD SERIES TROPHY AT THE DUNK’ The Providence College men’s basketball team honored the Boston Red Sox and the Pawtucket Red Sox as Boston captured the 2013 World Series this past year. Providence College held a special presentation of the World Series Trophy at halftime of the Friars versus Boston College men’s basketball game on Friday, November 8. The halftime presentation included a tribute to the Pawtucket Red Sox, who are a long-time sponsorship partner of Providence College athletics. The ceremony also included former Friar and Boston Red Sox player John McDonald ‘10. McDonald was a member of the 2013 Red Sox team.
