Calendar2 019 of Events How to Use Media Group Online’S Annual Calendar of Events CALENDAR2 019 OF EVENTS HOW TO USE MEDIA GROUP ONLINE’S ANNUAL CALENDAR OF EVENTS The Annual Calendar of Events is found in the Special Reports and Broadcast Planning Sections of the Media Group Online Website. This calendar provides a list of holidays and other designated special-event occasions, which can be used to pursue new advertising revenue opportunities. Within each month’s listing, you will find three classifications of events: monthlong, weeklong and designated days. Some events are national in scope while others are more local. To receive the maximum benefit from the Annual Calendar of Events, we suggest the following: • Schedule a staff meeting to discuss those special events that are two to three months in the future. Allow everyone to contribute ideas as to what events might serve as catalysts for revenue-generating station promotions. Determine which advertisers would be the prime prospects for these special promotions. Assign one person to guide these promotions from inception to fruition. • Instruct each member of your sales staff to select one event each month he or she thinks is the best opportunity to achieve added sales revenue. Ask for suggestions about how the event should be announced, implemented and assessed for results. Again, assign one salesperson to manage the promotion from beginning to end. • Use the calendar to prepare a list of community-event opportunities for your station to sponsor. Hosting a local event, such as the “KXXX-TV Have-A-Heart Walk” not only shows your support for the community, but also generates publicity for your station. • Look for events that could help your salespeople make connections with unique or small businesses. For example, National Bagel Day (15th) and National Croissant Day (30th) occur during January, which are excellent for a local bakery to promote itself. • Explore the calendar for events that are related to a theme. June and July are Fireworks Safety Month, so record and post a video from a local accident/fire prevention specialist. September is Hunger Action Month. Find advertisers who would like to help promote/support local food pantries. • Share this calendar with your programming department. Various events can serve as sources of potential talk-show subjects. Schedule a segment with a veterinarian or other expert during National Dog Bite Prevention Week (April 14–20). • Programming can also look for opportunities to run a series retrospective or special program marathon by searching for special events related to a specific program. For example, March 2019 is the 55th anniversary of the premiere of “Jeopardy” and November 2019 is the 50th anniversary of “Sesame Street.” Generate events to support these classic programs and others. • Assign one person to keep track of the details and the outcome of each event from the Annual Calendar of Events. Create success stories of how you helped various categories of advertisers gain traffic and/or added revenue, and then share these stories with advertisers in other categories, so they can benefit from the sponsorship of a special event. It is a day to share romantic deeds or expressions. Ten states and parts of two states observe Sweetest Day: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Washington and areas of both New York and Pennsylvania, west of the spine of the Appalachian Mountains. Sweetest Day has also been referred to as a “concocted promotion” created by the candy industry solely to increase sales of sweets. Origin The first Sweetest Day was on October 10, 1921 in Cleveland. The Cleveland Plain Dealer's October 8, 1922 edition, which chronicles the first Sweetest Day in Cleveland, states that the first Sweetest Day was planned by a committee of 12 confectioners chaired by candymaker C. C. Hartzell. The Sweetest Day in the Year Committee distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy to "newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor" in Cleveland, Ohio. The Sweetest Day in the Year Committee was assisted in the distribution of candy by some of the biggest movie stars of the day including Theda Bara and Ann Pennington. There were also several attempts to start a "Sweetest Day" in New York City, including a declaration of a Candy Day throughout the United States by candy manufacturers on October 8, 1922.

  • Wright Brothers Day, 2013
Proc. 9071 Title 3—The President Proclamation 9071 of December 16, 2013 Wright Brothers Day, 2013 By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation On December 17, 1903, decades of dreaming, experimenting, and careful engineering culminated in 12 seconds of flight. Wilbur and Orville Wright’s airplane soared above the wind-blown banks of Kitty Hawk, North Caro- lina, pushing the boundaries of human imagination and paving the way for over a century of innovation. On Wright Brothers Day, our Nation com- memorates this once unthinkable achievement. We celebrate our scientists, engineers, inventors, and all Americans who set their sights on the impos- sible. America has always been a Nation of strivers and creators. As our next gen- eration carries forward this proud tradition, we must give them the tools to translate energy and creativity into concrete results. That is why my Ad- ministration is dedicated to improving education in the vital fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We are working to broaden participation among underrepresented groups, and through Race to the Top, we are raising standards and making STEM education a pri- ority. Last year, we announced plans to create a national STEM Master Teacher Corps—a group of the best STEM teachers in the country, who will receive resources to mentor fellow educators, inspire students, and cham- pion STEM education in their communities. As we remember the Wright brothers, let us not forget another Wright who took up the mission of powered flight. Orville and Wilbur’s sister, Kath- arine, used her teacher’s salary to support the family and ran the Wrights’ bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, while her brothers worked in Kitty Hawk.
