The Church has been involved in the Christian burial of people for centuries upon centuries and it is amazing to think this is the first time Church of England clergy and laity have come together to discuss the final word. This is a wonder what we do in funeral ministry and that the church can offer in funeral share our experiences and good ministry, beyond that of the practices. Although one might think increasingly popular secular it a morbid subject, the conference celebrants. was an excellent one and brought to light much upon which we can That said, we must all acknowledge ponder – but fear not, I won’t bore that for those of us left behind you to death with the whole once those we love have died, grief content of the conference (pun is a very real thing. There is a intended!) tendency these days for much of a funeral to focus on a celebration of One thing that was clear is that for the life of the deceased and while us as Christians, death is not this has its place, it needs to be entirely the morbid subject we tend balanced by a real and honest to think it is. Indeed our very faith recognition of the bereavement of is founded upon the death of one family and friends. This is where very unique man, who was also the church again has a special God, Jesus Christ. But crucially place in funeral ministry, as we Christ was raised from the dead have the wonderful folk in our and as a result, as we sing so often congregations who will offer their at Eastertide, ‘death hath lost its love and support to those who sting’. And why is it that death has come to us in their need. And who lost its sting? Because through is to say when that need will arise. Christ we have the hope that A month later? A year? And this is not just be there whenever we are called some nebulous soul floating about upon and I know that there are in heaven, but much, much more. those in our congregations now This is the resurrection of the body, who have experienced the warmth as a new heaven and a new earth of fellowship that has and is are recreated and we are helping them in their grief. But reconciled fully to God and one don’t ever assume it has gone another. What a hope to look away and do ask people every now forward to and why death is not and then how they are. Every Sunday We must not be afraid to talk about death – indeed it is the one 8.00 am Holy Communion inevitable thing about life (more so (in Church every week) even that taxes, as we have recently heard how many people 1st Sunday of Month have found ways to avoid those!) So we hope to encourage some of 10.00 am Family Service our groups in the church to talk (in Church) openly about death so that it may lose yet more of its sting. We also 6.00 pm Holy Communion hope to build on the excellent (in Church) pastoral work we already do and make a more conscious effort, as a Subsequent Sundays whole church, to be there for those we have served in the funerals of 10.00 am Family Service their loved ones. In this way they (in Church Hall) may know that we really do care and offer a hope that goes beyond 10.00 am Holy Communion the graveside. Ordinations in June We are pleased to congratulate Rev Dr Ed Bampton on his Priesting in Leicester Cathedral on Saturday 27th June at 5.30 pm. Ed has been in the benefice for the last year following his ordination in June. We look forward to him continuing his contribution to our worship and church life in the future. We are also pleased to congratulate Noel Colley on his Ordination as Deacon in Leicester Cathedral on Sunday 28th June at 10.30 am. Noel will serve as Deacon in the Parish of St Mary’s Nanpanton. We wish him well in his calling having worshipped at St Botolph’s for nearly seven years. Page 5 St Botolph’s Mother’s Union Report—May (Unfortunately did not arrive in time for the June Magazine) Instead of our usual meeting last month we went to Southwell in Nottinghamshire for a guided tour of the Minster; but first of all we enjoyed a delicious meal at the ‘Hearty Good Fellow’ pub where several of us also partook of liquid refreshment. Before our tour began we watched a film about the everyday running of the Minster with contributions from the Dean, Choirmaster, Head Steward and a few others.
