Annual Report 2013/14 the National Trust in Brief National Trust Annual Report 2013/14 The National Trust in brief What is the National Trust? We are a charity founded in 1895 by three people who saw the importance of our nation’s heritage and open spaces, and wanted to protect them for everyone to enjoy. More than 115 years later, these values are still at the heart of everything we do. We look after special places throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland for ever, for everyone. We look after coastline, forests, woods, fens, beaches, farmland, moorland, islands, archaeological remains, nature reserves, villages, historic houses, gardens, mills and pubs. We restore them, protect them and open them up to everyone. For the Trust, conservation has always gone hand-in-hand with public access. We welcome everyone to explore: • 742 miles of coastline • Over 247,000 hectares of land • Over 350 historic houses, gardens and parks, ancient monuments and nature reserves Many of our properties are unable to fund their own permanent preservation. The cost of caring for them is high: our property project expenditure was £91.3 million in 2013/14. Most of our property is held inalienably, so it can never be sold or developed against our wishes without the consent of Parliament. We rely on the support of our members, donors and volunteers, as well as income from grant making bodies and commercial activities such as retail and catering, to look after the special places in our care. The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest and Natural Beauty is a registered charity (no. 205846). It is incorporated and has powers conferred on it by Parliament through the National Trust Acts 1907 to 1971 and under the Charities (National Trust) Order 2005. Since 1 September 2005 the Trust has been governed by a Board of Trustees whose composition appears on page 62. A brief description of the Trust’s organisation is given on pages 20 to 23. Our bankers, investment managers and auditors are identified on page 59, and the contact details for our principal offices are listed on page 88. There were almost 20 million visits to our pay-for-entry properties, 5% up on 2012/13, and surveys show our visitors found their visits more enjoyable. We met demanding financial targets and continued our programme of capital investment which will reduce the backlog of our conservation work, core to our historic mission. The living is a rectory, with the perpetual curacy of Snelston annexed, valued in the King’s book at £15 16s. 0½d., now £700. The Rev. Clement F. Broughton, M.A., is patron and incumbent. The rectory, a large handsome mansion, with projecting eaves and a handsome conservatory adjoining, is situated on an eminence a little south of the church. There are 58A. 1R. 28P. of glebe. A National school was erected in 1832, by subscription, aided by a small grant from the National school society. It is a neat brick building with residences for the teachers; about 60 children attend, who pay a small weekly payment. The bequest of Thomas Williams, who founded a school, and endowed it in 1678 with land now let for £18 a year, is appropriated to the National school. The North Staffordshire Railway runs through the parish about 200 yards N. W. of the church, and has a small station here. The manors of Norbury and Roston are described in Domesday survey as held by one Henry, under Henry de Ferrars. Robert de Ferrars, son of Henry, gave the manor to the prior and convent of Tutbury, who in the year 1125, conveyed it to William Fitzherbert, in fee-farm rents, subject to the yearly rent of 100s. ROSTON is a considerable village, 5 miles S.W. from Ashbourn, and three-quarters of a mile S.E.

    Charles Paget Wade This is Charles Paget Wade, a gentleman I came across whilst on holiday in the Cotswolds in 2014 near the picturesque village of Snowshill in Gloucestershire, which is noted for its extensive lavender fields and for its Manor which is where Charles Wade spent much of his life. Its name may be familiar to National Trust members. So what did he do and why is he of local interest? Well first let’s have a look at his family tree: Wade Family Tree As a teenager, Wade’s paternal grandfather, Solomon Abraham Wade (1806-1881), moved with his family from St Martin, an island in the north east of the West Indies archipelago to St. Kitts, about 50 miles to the south. Solomon set himself up as a merchant and by the early1860s had built a thriving business with four stores on St Kitts. Initially it was as S. A. Wade & Co and then, with a trusted employee, Samuel Abbott, he formed the partnership of Wade & Abbott. Through his business as a supplier and increasingly as an agent for the island ‘plantocracy’, Solomon gained knowledge and profits he used independent of Wade and Abbott to diversify and acquire property (including sugar cane plantations) in St Kitts and in nearby Nevis and Montserrat. His success established the fortune of the family into which Charles Wade was later born. Between 1844 and 1855 Solomon had seven children with Mary James (1817-1914), his housekeeper, who was of Afro-Caribbean descent, finally marrying in 1855. I do not have full details of the family and their birth dates but the names shown here are correct.
