BACKGROUND TO THE THEATRE ROYAL BATH (TRB)

The Theatre Royal Bath is one of the oldest operating in the country. Built in 1805, the theatre burned down on 1862 and was rebuilt in 1863. The TRB was the first theatre outside London to be granted a Royal Charter. In 1979, after several changes of ownership, the TRB was turned into a charitable trust, thanks to the generosity and foresight of the then owner, Jeremy Fry. Jeremy retained his links with the theatre as President of Bath Theatre Trust until his death in 2006.

The TRB was extensively refurbished in 1981/2 and emerged in the 80s and 90s as one of the country’s leading touring dates, presenting 46 weeks of varied , , dance, opera and musicals along with a six-week family pantomime over the Christmas period.

At the heart of TRB programming is high quality drama, for which it delivers the highest audience figures for any comparable theatre in the country. The Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre are regular visitors and pre and post West End productions make up the balance of the commercial strand of the theatre’s programme. TRB also presents Arts Council subsidised companies such as Northern Ballet Theatre and English Touring Opera. Other regular visitors include Carl Rosa Opera, Moscow City Ballet and Rambert Dance Company.

The TRB presents regular Festivals of national significance: the Bath Shakespeare Festival, Bath International Puppet Festival and the Wild and Wacky Festival of Theatre for Children.

In 1997 the TRB opened a second space, the Ustinov Studio. Seating 145 and equipped to a high specification, the Ustinov became the region’s leading venue for the presentation of innovative and cutting edge theatre, dance and physical theatre. The Ustinov Studio has recently undergone a spectacular refurbishment with improved auditorium, bar/foyer and technical facilities.

In 1998, the TRB established its own production company, Theatre Royal Bath Productions, to produce and co-produce work to present at the TRB, tour and when applicable, transfer into the West End and tour overseas. Theatre Royal Bath Productions has now produced in excess of 80 productions and the productions are a regular fixture on the Number One touring circuit and with recent productions transferring to London’s Vaudeville Theatre, Savoy Theatre, The Duke of York’s Theatre, the Duchess Theatre and the Old Vic. In addition, Theatre Royal Bath Productions has toured productions to the US, Hong Kong, and Australia.

In summer 2003 the Theatre Royal Bath mounted the first summer residency by the Peter Hall Company. The residency consists of three companies of actors presenting five plays. The Residency continued annually until 2012, when it was replaced by a 10 week repertory season.

In October 2005, TRB opened The Egg – a theatre for children and young people, situated in a Grade 2 listed building adjacent to the theatre. As well as a flexible auditorium, the egg has a foyer café, workshop spaces and a roof-top rehearsal space which have all been designed to make the building as accessible to children as possible.

The Theatre main house also underwent a major refurbishment in the summer of 2010, including a redevelopment of the main foyer, a new stalls bar, a re-vamp of the auditorium and a major renewal of technical facilities and equipment.
