Given by Mrs. John D. McIlhenny. REPORT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

To the Members of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art:

The report of the Board of Trustees for the year ending May 31, 1925, is respectfully submitted by the President. The Acting' Director of the Museum and the Principal of the School will present in detail reports of the operation of those depart- ments.

The Museum is becoming more of a factor each year in the art life of the community both in improvement in the character of the exhibits and in the manner of their display. Many demands are now made upon this Museum as upon other museums for advice upon art matters which should assist in the growing dis- crimination and taste of American collectors. The School con-

tinues its service to the City and State in providing trained young

people for the art industry, an essential service if this country

is to advance in greater general esthetic taste and if it is to produce better wares in competition with Europe.

The last legislature of the State of Pennsylvania allotted to

this Corporation $120,000 for the biennium beginning July 1, 1925, which amount was reduced by the Governor of the State to $85,000. This is unfortunate, as it cripples the School in its

constructive work for the art trades of the Commonwealth. It is difficult to understand why schools of industrial art should be less favored than those giving academic instruction. The City of has. however, granted the Corporation an additional

$10,000 in its yearly appropriation which is an encouragement to further usefulness.

Payment has been received during the year under the bequest of Miss Fannie S. Magee of $51,483.76 and under that of James R. Magee of $8195.23. There has also been received from the estate of John A. Crane the sum of $5743 for establishing a scholarship fund in the Textile Department to be a memorial to his wife. Emilie M. Crane.

1! The membership of the Corporation has been increased during the year by the addition of one Patron in Perpetuity, five Fellows for Life, one Sustaining Member, thirty-two Contributing Mem- bers and two hundred and ninety-one Annual Members.

The financial statement for the fiscal year ending May 31, 1925, will be set forth in the report of the Treasurer, the net cash operation showing a deficit of $4830.69.

During the year the Corporation has lost by death Mr. John G. Carruth, a Trustee appointed by the Council of the City of Philadelphia since 1903. As a member of the Executive and Finance Committees throughout that period and as a Vice-Presi- dent since 1912, he always manifested interest, particularly in the work of the School, and was valued for hislwise counsel.

Mrs. John H. Brinton also died during the year. She was a member of the Associate Committee of Women since 1904, and was for many years Chairman of its Committee on Scholarships.

Mrs. Rudolph Blankenburg has resigned from the office of President of the Associate Committee of Women, which position she has occupied continuously since 1904, and has been honored by that body with election as Honorary President. Mrs. Blank- enburg has been active also as a member of the Executive, Museum and Instruction Committees of the Corporation and her faithful- ness and sound judgment have contributed to the development of the Institution.

Mr. Huger Elliott. Principal of the School since 1920, has resigned that position to take effect July 1, 1925. in order to undertake important educational work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in . He has raised the standard and improved the efficiency of the School. The Trustees appreciate his valuable services, which they regret to lose and wish him abundant success in his new field of labor.

It is fitting to record in this report that one of the officers of the School, Mr. Edward W. France, has this vear completed 40 years of continuous connection with the Textile Department

12 As Director of that important work, he has reflected credit upon ihe School and has rendered notable aid to the Textile Industry of the Country.

The Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art was incorporated February 27, 1876. Its fiftieth anniversary will occur in 1926, and plans should soon be made for a suitable celebration of the event. This Institution has made a very great contribution to the development of Philadelphia during- its half- century of service, and the growing' list of members and contrib- utors attest its value. It is most earnestly hoped that more and more its scope may be increased and that by generous gifts it may be enabled to take its place among the great art institutions of the country. John D. McIlhenny, President.

REPORT OF THE ACTING DIRECTOR OF THE MUSEUM

To the President and Trustees of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art:

I have the honor to present to you the following" report

There has been a steady progress in the classification and installation of objects and in the higher specialization of the work of various members of the staff. The general aspect and physical condition of the Museum is markedly improved. Miss Reath and Mr. Jayne together worked out a decimal classification of hand- loom textiles based on weaves. This is the most notable scien tific achievement by the staff for a very long period. Our study collection of textiles, purchased this year from the Ozeas, Ram • borger, Keehmle Fund, is catalogued and labeled according to this system and the Museum Bulletin, containing the article on this classification received the most favorable notice.

The Bulletin has appeared regularly, being edited by Mr. King, and the type of articles apparently has improved as judged by the larger demand for the publication.

In November last a docent service was instituted. The Library has grown by the addition of 234 volumes, and we would be gratified to find it more widely known and used by those interested in the various collections. Two subdivisions of the Library have been gotten into usable order by the addition of a file for photographs and for illustrated post cards. The collection of photographs is the basis of a very good and much used sub- division of the Library.

Mr. Herbert Cescinsky, an English authority on woodwork, was invited to explain the furniture collections of the Museum, and the following afternoon lectured on the "English Half- Timbered House."

The Horticultural Society held three exhibitions in the Museum, attended in one case by 38,000 people in one afternoon.

15 The William L. Elkins collection of paintings, together with suitable furniture, ceramics and textiles from Memorial Hall, was installed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Fairmount. Later some of the pictures of the William L. Elkins collection were superseded by the George W. Elkins collection. The exhi- bition of City Planning and Architecture of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the T Square Club was installed in the neighboring gallery of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Periodically throughout the year, special exhibitions have been held in Memorial Hall, most notable being that of textiles, old and modern fabrics.

During the year our collections have been greatly enriched by the gift of the woodwork of the palladian window from the southern front of old St. John's Church, now destroyed, by the

overdoors and mantel from the Catawissa Railway office. The silver collection has received, from the Keehmle Fund, the very important porcelain bowl, mounted as a Monteith, by the Ameri- can silversmith Amory; a tankard by Philip Syng, II, 1750, the

gift of Roland L. Taylor, Esq. ; a sucket fork by John De Nise, c. 1700, the gift of Mrs. Alfred Coxe Prime, this latter probably

is unique. The furniture collection shows two Pennsylvania

German tables of a very early type, presented by J. Stogdell Stokes, Esq.; a butterfly table from New England, presented by Francis Hill Bigelow, Esq., in memory of the late Dr. Barber; a very splendid Philadelphia made Chippendale sofa and a wing chair, c. 1770, both with ball and claw feet. The Taylor Fund purchased the Portrait of a Chinese Gentleman of the Ming period. Daniel H. Farr, Esq., presented a small collection of

European textiles ; Horace H. F. Jayne, Esq., presented a cast iron head of Kwan Yin, Southern Sung Dynastv, and a small bronze figure of the Six Dynasties. From the Membership Fund we have purchased three notable Chinese paintings. Roland L. Taylor, Esq.. lent his collection of Wedgwood.

Samuel Rea, Esq., has enriched the silver collection by a very notable group of twenty-five pieces showing the development

16 of the craft in England from the 16th to the 19th centuries, including" pieces by Paul Lamerie, David Willaume, and other noted masters of the craft in England, Scotland and Ireland. Miss Lydia Morris presented a collection of watches and clocks, arms, Oriental jewelry, ceramics, etc., and five pieces of Phila- delphia made silver by the notable masters of the 18th century, which had long been in the possession of her family.

The Curator of Paintings reports making the catalogue of the William L. Elkins and George VV. Elkins collections of paint- ings in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Fairmount, and holding in the Print Room a number of exhibitions, most notable of which was Etchings and Engravings by Contemporary Artists of Hol- land, which had considerable success, attracting not only a great deal of publicity, but resulting in sales of over forty prints with a value of approximately $1000. This collection is now on circuit throughout the country under the auspices of this Museum.

In conjunction with the Art Alliance, the Circulating Gallery of Pictures was inaugurated with an exhibition at the Museum. The Curator arranged an exhibition of prints for the Philadelphia Print Club. The catalogue of the stained glass collection has been published. The department has been particularly active in helpful identification, expertisation and restoration of paintings and in assisting collectors. S. W. Woodhouse, Jr., Acting. Director.

sive training in June and August ; three weeks in the former month and four in the latter. The Principal gave weekly over- sight to the work during the Summer.

Teaching Staff

It is with sincere sorrow that I mention the death, in Feb- ruary, of Virginia Lois Ralston, head of the course in Costume Design. Mrs. Ralston's unusual abilities, her unique training, her broad vision and her personal magnetism made her a leader without equal in her profession and her untimely death was a blow to the School and a great personal loss to her co-workers and pupils. Nineteen new instructors were added to the faculty in 1924-

25. These were: J. Robert Buffler, Instrumental Drawing; John

J. Dull, Water Color ; Ralph Dunkelberger, Cast Drawing

Elizabeth Shippen Green Elliott, Costumed Model Class ; H. W.

Field, Weaving, Weaving Formations and Cotton Yarns ; Mae

Fogarty, Costume Design ; Frederick Jennings, Wool Grading and Sorting ; Paul C. Keys, Weave Formation and Fabric Anal-

ysis ; Louise Landenberger, Costume Design ; Milton E. McCros-

son, Cotton Carding and Spinning : Truman Matthews. Cast

Drawing ; Helen Padley, Costume Design : Herbert Pullinger.

Pen and Ink Lithography ; William H. Stuart, Instrumental Drawing; Dana Yaughan, Design; H. D. Ware. Poster and

Stage Setting for the Philadelphia Orchestra

One of the notable achievements of the School during the past year was the painting of a setting for the Philadelphia Orchestra, the design and execution of which was a gift to the Orchestra from Mr. Elliott and the instructors and students who worked upon it.

During the winter of 1923-24 Mr. Elliott worked over the scheme with Mr. Stokowski ; the final study, on paper, being 12 by 15 feet. In the summer Mr. Elliott made the full-color scale- drawings and full-size studies of the various flowers and leaves used in the decoration. The work of painting the enormous canvases was, by careful management, completed in twenty-one days. This was necessitated by the fact that the School did not open until September 17th and the first concert was on the 10th of October. As the sides of the set are 34 feet high at the front, and 44 feet long, and the back section 30 by 28 feet, it will be seen that sure and rapid work was imperative. Five of the instructors—Mr. Adolph, Mr. Copeland, Mr. McLellan, Miss Meehan and Mr. Warwick—and about forty students worked day and night at this labor of love; the highest praise is due them for their splendid accomplishment.

Gifts

Among the many generous gifts made to the School the following should particularly be mentioned : from Mr. Mcllhenny, seven illustrations and six sketches by the late F. Walter Taylor a most interesting group which is a splendid addition to our collection of original illustrations ; also from 1 the same donor some pieces of modern French peasant slip-decorated ware, which will be most useful in the Pottery Class. From Mr. John F.

Braun, three pen-and-ink illustrations by Joseph Pennell ; another notable addition to the collection of originals. To this collection, at the urgent insistence of Mr. Oakley, Miss Jessie Willcox Smith

35 and Elizabeth Shippen Green (Airs. Huger Elliott) have each added one of her illustrations. Mrs. Ellis Ames Ballard has given us more than fifty lantern slides of notable engravings and etchings, and the recent publication of the French Government on the History of French Engraving, containing 908 plates of facsimile reproductions — a number in color — of the Master Works from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. These gifts have already been extensively used.

Museum Study Material for the Schools

During the summer half-tone reproductions of objects in the Museum were prepared for use in the Public Schools. The examples were selected by Mr. Dillaway, Supervisor of Art in the Public Schools, and Mr. Elliott. A set consists of six sheets, containing in all, 48 half-tones, each selected to illustrate some principle in design, with notes subjoined. Five hundred sets were presented to the Schools, with the half-tone plates ; a number of sets retained to be sold at cost by the Corporation.

The distribution of these reproductions has given to 'the teachers excellent illustrative material for classroom use and will greatly increase the use of the collections in the Museum. Showing of Modern Costumes

In May the students of the class in Costume Design gave at the Manufacturers' Club their third annual exhibition of coats and dresses designed and made by the members of the class.

The showing was even better than that of the previous year ; the gowns were distinctive and original without being in the least "freakish." The afternoon and evening exhibitions were well attended ; many manufacturers and designers were present. The hall was given through the generosity of Mr. William H. Richard- son and his Committee. The majority of the costumes were made from material donated by the following firms : F. A. .Bochmann & Company, The Cleveland Worsted Mills Company, Folwell Brothers & Company, Goodman and Theise, William Iselin & Company, William F. Read & Son. Shelbourne Mills, Walther Manufacturing Company.

Respectfully submitted, Hunziker & Company. CCH/MG per Chas. C. Hunziker, Certified Public Accountant. July 17, 1925.

To the Board of Trustees, The Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Gentlemen : The Auditing Committee of the Board of Trustees reports that it has examined the Securities deposited with the Land Title and Trust Company and finds them in agreement with the records in the offices of the Secretary and Treasurer, making a total, as set forth in the foregoing Report of the Treasurer, of $665,704.45. John S. Jenks, William M. Elkins.

Supplementing our report of June 5, 1925, we wish to state that the list of Investments which were examined and found cor- rect by Messrs. John S. Jenks and W. M. Elkins, as of June 2, 1925, were compared by us with the Investments as shown on the Ledger and found correct. The totals as shown by the list sub- mitted calls for $700,275.00 which the books show as $665,704.45. 50 REPORT OF THE ASSOCIATE COMMITTEE OF WOMEN To the President and Board of Trustees: I herewith present the thirty-eighth Annual Report of the Associate Committee of Women. The Annual Meeting of the Associate Committee of Women held on Friday, May eighth, coincided with the eightieth birthday of Mrs. Blankenburg, who has for so many years been the wise and liberal leader of the Committee. As Mrs. Blankenburg was unswerving in her determination to re- fuse re-election as active President of the board, she was unani- mously elected honorary President of the Associate Committee of Women.

It is with profound sorrow that we record the death of Mrs. John H. Brinton, one of the senior members of the association,' and up to the time of her death the faithful and devoted chairman of the Scholarship Committee. It was with sincere regret that the Committee found it necessary to accept the resignation of a valued member : Mrs. H. Norris Harrison. The Costume Committee, Mrs. Henry Brinton Coxe, Chair- man: The School suffered an irreparable loss in the death of Mrs. Ralston, who stood at the top of her profession. More than ordinary credit is due to the students of her class in Costume Design, whose exhibits at the Fashion Show at the Manufac- turers' Club on May 19 were worthy of the foremost Parisian designers, thereby proving how well they had profited by their previous instruction. The Students' League House, Miss Ewing, Chairman : The sixteenth year of the League House in the opinion of the Com- mittee has been most successful. The only serious illness was one case of measles, and owing to the good care of the house- mother, Miss Harshberger, who isolated the student and called in a trained nurse, none of the other students contracted the disease. Miss Harshberger has taken pride in meeting all the running expenses the of house, making repairs, and putting in

51 : :

coal without calling upon the Committee—the board received from the students having been sufficient to meet these obliga- tions. The House Committee, Mrs. William H. Walbaum, Chair-

man : The restaurant, owing to Mrs. Patterson's untiring ef- forts, has been most successful and has added to the health and comfort of both students and teachers. Entertainment Committee. Mrs. C. Stewart Wurts, Chair- man : A card party was held at the Bellevue-Stratf ord, the pro- ceeds of which were donated to the fund for sending teachers of the School to Europe. A sum of $1,550 has been raised by the Associate Committee of Women toward sending teachers of the School to the Decorative Art Exhibition in Paris. Museum Committee, Mrs. Frank T. Patterson, Chairman The Associate Committee of Women has served the interests of the Museum most faithfully, being present at all the receptions given at the Museum, helping to collect money and lending ob- jects of value. To the younger members special thanks are due for their help in caring for the guests of the Museum at the receptions. Two associations have used the Museum for ex-

hibitions and receptions : the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society with a Flower Show, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance with an inaugural exhibition of a Circulating Library of Pictures. Detailed reports from each Committee Chairman were pre- sented under the following captions Mrs. Frank T. Patterson, for the Course in Wrought Iron. Mrs. C. Stewart Wurts, for the Course in Textiles. Miss Margaretta S. Hinchman, for the Course in Furni ture and Woodwork. Mrs. Robert R. Logan, for the Course in Pottery. Mrs. C. Shillard-Smith, for the Course in Illustration. Mrs. Robert R. Logan, for the Committee on the Library. Respectfully submitted, Amy Oakley, Corresponding Secretary.
