The Oldham-Ramona School District has been working hard on a Start School Safe plan which includes updated policies and procedures due to the pandemic. Please watch your email for this information. Also, please check your email often now, and throughout the school year for any updates as we navigate through these unprecedented times. Every Kid, Every Day, Michael Fischer, Superintendent ___________________________________________________________________________________ Welcome back to our returning families and a special welcome to those joining us for the first time! We are very excited to have students back in the building! Before I get too far into my newsletter, I would like to thank all of the parents and guardians of our district for entrusting the staff at Oldham-Ramona with their most precious gift. Please know that we take our job of educating and keeping your student(s) safe very seriously. With the new year and continued pandemic, comes new questions, policies, and faces. Please continue to watch your e-mail and look over handbooks for possible changes. I encourage everyone to attend activities, and contact me if you have any questions. The school’s phone number is (605) 482-8244 and my e-mail is [email protected]. If you are planning on coming to the school, please check our Start School Safe policies and procedures. Anyone who comes to the school must stop in the office and check in with Ms. Hyland. For the safety of our students and staff, we need to know who is in the building. Please check out the topics below as sources for additional information regarding the school and its activities: Campus Portal – This is an important tool for checking your student’s progress, attendance, schedule, and check and or add to their lunch accounts. The link is located in the top left corner of the school’s webpage. If you are experiencing problems, cannot access it, or need to be setup, please contact the school. Infinite Campus also has an app for parents and for students on the App Store. R-School – The R-School calendar is linked to the words “ORR RAIDERS ATHLETIC CALENDAR” on the homepage of the school’s website. This calendar is almost entirely for 7-12 athletic events. This will be the most up-to-date athletic calendar. Announcements – Ms. Hyland puts together announcements that cover the days’ activities as well as activities in the future. These announcements show up on the Campus Portal, but can also be e-mailed to you. If you would like to be on the announcements list, please contact Ms. Hyland ([email protected]). Calendars/Handbooks – All of the most current calendars are posted on the school’s website. Handbooks are in their final stage of review and should be on the school’s website the first or second week of August. If you have questions about something on the calendar or in one of the handbooks, please contact me. Parents sometimes ask me how they can help their student(s) have a successful school year. The good news is that the tips are simple. The bad news is that for these to be effective, they have to be done consistently, correctly, and sometimes without the appreciation of your student. Take a look at the tips below and consider how implementation of these tips looks at your home. In the famous words of Red Green, “Remember I’m pullin’ for ya – we’re all in this together.” 1. Get involved 8. Keep your student’s schedule manageable and 2. Communicate with your student and the school help them find a balance between work and play 3. Be consistent and have a routine 9. Praise hard work 4. Limit screen time and increase sleep 10. Create a positive learning environment at home 5. Be your student’s advocate 11. Speak positively to your student about education 6. Advocate for your student, but don’t make 12. Enjoy the school year with your child excuses 13. Be flexible, who knows what the year will bring 7. Promote independence and responsibility The ORR Raider athletic season is just about ready to get started. The Fall Sports meeting will take place in Rutland on August 6 at 6:00 PM. As with almost everything else, the pandemic will change a few things in our athletic seasons. This and other changes will be discussed by Mr. Hanson and myself at the Fall Sports meeting. Reminder – participating in these activities is a privilege. This privilege can be protected by staying eligible and following school and state rules. Parents can help their student-athlete by regularly checking their grades and help hold them accountable. Our teams feed off the positive feedback and the atmosphere that is created at events. We need to keep a positive experience for all and avoid cheering against other teams, individual athletes, officials, and coaches. Sportsmanship does not only apply to those wearing a Raider jersey. Lastly, I would ask that parents keep an eye on your children at games to keep everyone safe. If students do not want to sit with their parents, please sit in the student section and cheer loudly. We wish all Raiders a great season! Important upcoming athletic dates: August 3 – First allowable cheer practice. August 6 – Fall Sports meeting in Rutland at 6:00 PM. Go Raiders! SCHOOL NOTES *Registration packets were mailed out at the end of July this year due to COVID-19. There will not be in-person registration. Registration forms are due back to the school by Thursday, August 6. Although there will be Open House from 2:00-6:00 pm on August 12, there are scheduled times for elementary students to come into the building and 7-12 students can come in as well but we ask all to social distance and wait patiently as needed. There will not be any food served this year. If you are sick in any fashion, please arrange another time to come in. *School starts at 8:15 am and dismisses at 3:21 pm. Students should not come to school until 7:50 am, which is when breakfast is served, unless arrangements have been made with their teacher. We will be on a 4-day-week schedule. Most of the time, this will mean school is not in session on Fridays. But, if there is no school on a Monday, school will be in session that following Friday. Please pay close attention to the calendar in each monthly newsletter. Students need to go directly to their classroom in the morning. *In order to better serve each student and their family, we are asking that if your child is not going to be in school or running late please call and let us know by 8:30 am. The telephone number is 605-482-8244.
