Wickramasinghe, W.W.M.E.G.P.M.B.Wickramasinghe Supervised by Mr. S.C.Thushara Abstract Countries differ from one country to another country by their identical characteristics which are coming under their own national culture. People behaviors are respectively linked to cultural values of the country and this association is based on the framework of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. The study indicates the cultural differences of the countries among the world according to a four dimension which are Power distance, Uncertainty avoidance, Individualism vs. collectivism and Masculinity vs. femininity. Power distance means the extent to the nations which accept the power in organization or anywhere is distributed unequally without further justifications. The extent to which the members of a culture feel threatened by ambiguous or unknown situations and have created beliefs and institutions that try to avoid these is reflected by the Uncertainty avoidance. The third dimension is Individualism vs. collectivism which reflect the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members, and the fourth dimension, Masculinity vs. femininity indicates that the society will be driven by competition, achievement and success, with success being defined by the winner / best in field – a value system that starts in school and continues throughout organizational behavior. The purpose of this study is comparing the national culture in Asian countries and identifies what factors affect to association with the Hofstede’s cultural dimension studies. -

It explores modes of cross-cultural communication and textual culture conditioned by the Chinese script, including gloss-reading techniques, “brush talk,” and biliteracy; surveys shared political and social institutions and literary practices, sustained by the flourishing book trade; and touches on the rise of vernacular literatures, the dynamic between Literary Chinese and local vernaculars, and the role of women. With the recent death of Literary Chinese as the lingua franca of East Asia we are facing a new phase in world history. American International Journal of Contemporary Research Vol. 5, No. 5; October 2015 Past, Present and Future of Hallyu (Korean Wave) Kim Bok-rae Professor Andong national University I. Introduction Hallyu refers to the phenomenon of Korean popular culture which came into vogue in Southeast Asia and mainland China in late 1990s. Especially, hallyu is very popular among young people enchanted with Korean music (K-pop), dramas (K-drama), movies, fashion, food, and beauty in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, etc. This cultural phenomenon has been closely connected with multi-layered transnational movements of people, information and capital flows in East Asia. Since the 15th century, East and West have been the two subjects of cultural phenomena. Such East–West dichotomy was articulated by Westerners in the scholarly tradition known as “Orientalism.”During the Age of Exploration (1400–1600), West didn’t only take control of East by military force, but also created a new concept of East/Orient, as Edward Said analyzed it expertly in his masterpiece Orientalism in 1978. Throughout the history of imperialism for nearly 4-5 centuries, west was a cognitive subject, but East was an object being recognized by the former. Accordingly, “civilization and modernization” became the exclusive properties of which West had copyright (?!), whereas East was a “sub-subject” to borrow or even plagiarize from Western standards. In this sense, (making) modern history in East Asia was a compulsive imitation of Western civilization or a catch-up with the West in other wards. Thus, it is interesting to note that East Asian people, after gaining economic power through “compressed modernization,”1 are eager to be main agents of their cultural activities in and through the enjoyment of East Asian popular culture in a postmodern era. -

Asia stretches from Europe in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east and from the Indian Ocean in the south and the Arctic Ocean in the north. Asia covers 30 per cent of the Earth’s total land area and 8.7 per cent of the planet’s surface. The continent, which has long been home to the majority of the human population, now has 60 per cent of the world’s population. That is 6 out of every 10 people live in Asia – a total population of 4.5 billion people. Asia is home to several of the world’s oldest civilizations and the birthplace of its great religions. The climate ranges from very cold in the north to hot and wet in the south. The interior of the continent is mostly dry. Much of southern and southeast Asia is affected by the monsoon, a seasonal reversal of wind direction. When the wind blows from the warm oceans onto the land it brings large amounts of rainfall. When it blows from the dry interior of Asia the winds are dry and there is little rainfall. As a result, much of mainland Asia is seasonally wet and dry. -
