Jay Sorg MSU Head Coach

Jay Sorg is entering his fourth season leading the Morehead State Eagles baseball program. Sorg is a former Eagle standout and veteran professional baseball player and coach.

Sorg has made an immediate impact in his short time at the helm of the Eagle program. In his first season with the Eagles (2008) the team made significant improvements both defensively and offensively, raising the team’s national rankings in several categories including ERA, fielding percentage, home runs per game, double plays per game and win- loss percentage. Sorg’s second season saw continued improvement for his young ballclub; the team ranked in the top 25 nationally in home runs per game (14th), home runs (19th), slugging percentage (14th), double plays per game (6th) and double plays (1st). Last season the Eagles once again dominated several offensive categories nationally; the team ranked in the top 25 nationally in batting average (18th), scoring (13th), home runs per game (3rd), home runs (12th) and slugging percentage (5th). The Sorg File The Eagles have also made significant strides in improving their competition with Sorg at the helm. The team has improved in RPI each of his three seasons and the team has raised its RPI 88 spots from 2008-10. 2008-Present Head Coach Morehead State Several Eagles players have been nominated for numerous awards and accolades both athletically and academically since Sorg was named head coach at Morehead. Last season, Eagle seniors Drew Lee and J.D. 2006-07 Ashbrook were named to First Team All-OVC squad, as well as being named Third Team All-Americans by Bench Coach Ping!Baseball. Michael Bottoms was also heralded for his performance during his senior season garnering Second Team All-OVC honors and was named a quarterfinalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the 2001-03 Year Award. Lee and Bottoms were also honored for scholastic achievement and were selected to the ESPN Coach The Magazine Academic All-District First and Second Teams respectively as selected by the College Sports Billings Mustangs Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Six Eagles have been named player or pitcher of the week since Sorg’s arrival and two players Lee and Cameron Flynn were named National 2000 Manager Players of the Week last season. Eagle baseball recruiting has seen resurgence under the guidance of Sorg and his talented staff of young evaluators. The Eagles signed Kentucky Male Athlete of the Year Aaron Watts and Louisville Slugger TPX High School All-Americans Duran Elmore and Caden Cleveland to a National Letter of Intent last offseason. The influx of talented student-athletes has not stopped there, as the Eagles inked several high caliber student-athletes to join the club next season.

Sorg played three seasons as a third baseman at MSU (1992-94) before being selected in the 15th round of the 1994 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. During his MSU career, he was a member of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champion team (1993), served as the Eagle captain, was named the team’s most valuable player and earned First-Team All-OVC accolades (1994).

Sorg played five years in the Reds minor league system, before being hired by the club as a baseball instructor in their player development area. He held numerous positions in the organization over the next five years including: manager of the Class A Clinton (Iowa) and Advanced Rookie League Billings (Mont.) minor league teams, hitting coach for Class A Rockford (Ill.) and Billings minor league teams, bench coach for the AAA Louisville Bats, and minor league spring training camp coordinator. While with Clinton, he led the team to the playoffs as the youngest professional manager (26) in the nation. He also led Billings to a Pioneer League Championship. While coaching in the Reds minor league system, Sorg had the opportunity to coach both of the 2010 Major League Baseball’s Most Valuable Players in Josh Hamilton and Joey Votto.

Sorg left the Reds organization in 2003 to be closer to his family, taking a position as director of baseball operations for Champions Sports Complex in Louisville, a position he held for three years.
