“Contextualizing C. S. Lewis’ Christian Libertarianism” (Urban) CONTEXTUALIZING C. S. LEWIS’ CHRISTIAN LIBERTARIANISM: ENGAGING DYER AND WATSON AND BEYOND David V. Urban1 Abstract: Analyzes C. S. Lewis’ Christian libertarianism by engaging important recent scholarship on Lewis’ natural law-based political thought and by considering both Lewis’ place within Christian classical liberal/libertarian thought since the late eighteenth century and how his insights are germane to contemporary political and ethical controversies. Keywords: C. S. Lewis, classical liberalism, political philosophy, Dyer, Watson, libertarianism, NHS, Madison, Bastiat, Acton, Machen, Tocqueville, homosexuality I. INTRODUCTION The notion that C. S. Lewis was effectively apolitical has remained the conventional understanding of Lewis’ admirers. Such a belief is no doubt understandable in light of the words of his closest relatives. Lewis’ brother Warnie, acknowledging Lewis’ reputed “contempt for politics and politicians,” spoke of Lewis’ enduring “disgust and revulsion from the very idea of politics.”2 In his biography of Lewis, Lewis’ stepson Douglas 1 David V. COYNE Abstract The evolution from the state of nature to some form of social order has been a central question of political theory for centuries. Many writers begin their analysis of this situation by making pessimistic assumptions about man’s behavior in the state of na ture. In doing so, they conclude that a centralized government is the best possible outcome. We critically reconsider the models of the evolution of government, and the resulting social order, as put forth by Buchanan, and McGuire and Olson. In doing so, we analyze if the pessimistic assumptions prove that a centralized government is in fact superior to the state of nature. * Benjamin Powell (MA, George Mason University) is a Social Change Fellow at the Mercatus Center and PhD candidate in economics at George Mason University. This time the subject is the emergence of governance structures within online communities and the visions of political sovereignty shaping some of those communities. Ludlow views virtual communities as laboratories for conducting experiments in the Peter Ludlow construction of new societies and governance structures. While many online experiments will fail, Ludlow argues that given the synergy of the online world, new and superior governance structures may emerge. Indeed, utopian visions are not out of place, provided that we understand the new utopias to edited by be fleeting localized “islands in the Net” and not permanent institutions. The book is organized in five sections. The first section considers the sovereignty of the Internet. The second section asks how widespread access to resources such as Pretty Good Privacy and anonymous remailers allows the possibility of “Crypto Anarchy”—essentially carving out space for activities that lie outside the purview of nation-states and other traditional powers. The Crypto Anarchy, Cyberstates, third section shows how the growth of e-commerce is raising questions of legal jurisdiction and taxation for which the geographic boundaries of nation- states are obsolete. A Critical Commentary on Kukathas’s “Two Constructions of Libertarianism”1 J C Lester (As the text indicates in various places, a version of this essay is now a chapter in a book: Lester, J. C. 2014. Explaining Libertarianism: Some Philosophical Arguments. Buckingham: The University of Buckingham Press.) Abstract Kukathas’s alleged libertarian dilemma is introduced and the two key criticisms of it stated. The succeeding critical commentary then makes several main points. Kukathas’s account of libertarianism offers no theory of liberty at all, nor a coherent account of aggression. Consequently, he cannot see that his “Federation of Liberty” is not libertarian by a basic understanding of morals and non-invasive liberty, still less by a more precise theory of liberty. In trying to explain his “Union of Liberty”, Kukathas evinces considerable confusion about the nature of libertarianism. His argument that a monopoly legal system is inevitable, is also neither plausible nor libertarian. He has apparently overlooked the cogent arguments against Nozickian minarchy, and in favour of anarchy. It is concluded that the neglect of libertarian theories of liberty and anarchy is the underlying problem. Introduction Kukathas believes he has discovered a serious and unavoidable dilemma for libertarians.2 He claims we must choose between (1) strictly self-defensive communities in a ―Federation of Liberty‖ possibly with no libertarian communities in the federation, and (2) a centrally authoritarian ―Union of Liberty‖ that tolerates no dissent, possibly including that of self-styled libertarians. This article provides a critical commentary on Kukathas‘s relevant assumptions and arguments in the order in which he makes them. -
