Romeo and Juliet are in love; however, Juliet is a volatile lover. The more Romeo expresses his infatuation for Juliet, the more she runs away. Interestingly enough, when Romeo is demoralized by Juliet's lack of emotion, Juliet is then suddenly attracted to Romeo. Romeo, in comparison, desires Juliet when she shows interest in him and becomes disinterested when Juliet no longer shows him attention. Let R(t) = Romeo's love/hate for Juliet at time t J(t) = Juliet's love/hate for Romeo at time t Note that positive values for R and J signify love while negative values signify hate. This behavior of the relationship between Romeo and Juliet can be express as the following system of differential equations: dR = aJ dt (1) dJ dt = −bR where a and b are both positive real numbers. Note: You may use the MATLAB codes found in the Appendix as a template for the code needed for some of the problems in this project. For more on using Matlab to numerically solve differential equations, see [1]. Exploration of the model 1. Why do the right hand sides of the equations have different signs? 2 2. Aside- Words spoken, usually in an undertone not intended to be heard by all characters Hyperbole-extreme exaggerations Puns- Humorous use of a word with two meanings. We model this emotional situation using simple, linear differential equations in the style of Strogatz [1, 2]. Using geometric and computational approaches, we observe that this situation results in the never ending cycle of ardor and indifference. 2 1 Problem Statement Love and lovers are fickle and moody creatures which both crave and flee from pur- suit.     ROMEO AND JULIET - The plot W. Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet - Summary - 5 days / 5 acts Act I Romeo is infatuated with Rosaline. In order to see her, he takes a risk and, on the Sunday evening, he goes to a party [the Masque] given by Lord Capulet, the enemy of his family, the Montagues. There he meets Juliet, Capulet's daughter. The two young people fall in love at first sight. Whole day: Sunday - Courtly concept of love: melancholy / holy devotion idealization of the object of desire Act II After the party Romeo enters the Capulets' garden and, seeing Juliet at her balcony, admires her beauty. Juliet, not knowing Romeo is below, confesses that she loves him despite the fact that he is a Montague. Romeo speaks to her, they exchange vows of love and plan to be married. The following day, Monday, they are happily married by Friar Laurence, their confessor, who consents to celebrate the marriage in the hope that it will bring their families to a reconciliation. Sunday night – Monday - Dialogues: theme of love: from courtly convention (in this context Juliet stands for innocence) to earthly, concrete, realistic love. This makes Juliet a REAL woman The same plot drives her towards this atypical attitude: being in love with Romeo creates obstacles because of the NAME which does not correspond to the REAL Romeo. Reflection on LANGUAGE and its symbolic value leads her to the REALITY of things. Act III Later in the day Romeo is involved, against his will, in a fight in which Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, kills Mercutio, Romeo's best friend.

    SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information. Hopefully you will find everything you need to prepare you for your audition-if not please feel free to call CHRISTINE DUFF DIRECTOR ON 0412 112 486 or PRODUCER PETER UNIACKE on 02 6058 6381 (BH) or 0435 961 239 (AH). (Even if you are just running late on the day!) There are a number of main roles here for both males and females and we will be flexible in age ranges. Our audience will have expectations of the play, for some it is the only Shakespeare they know, so we are keeping our casting fairly traditional but with a few surprises if we get the right people. What we’re saying to you is, don’t rule yourself out of auditioning for any of the roles. If you are looking at auditioning for the ensemble or one of our smaller parts (line wise that is) then be aware you may end up playing a number of scenes and may be one or two (or more) characters. (Verona was a crowded place) SO please, if you are auditioning for a main role, please consider also doing some ensemble work – it will give you at least one cameo role, if not two. (we don’t want you sitting around) SO read the list of roles for the ensemble as well.
