It should rather recall the image of a construction site with its scaffolding and piles of bricks, and with its plentiful uncovered pits. As on the building site of a medieval cathedral, every worker lays his pavement or polishes up his column knowing that one day a majestic edifice will rise and that it will be as accomplished and solid as is the least element of its structure. The reader can imagine the edifice as he reads through the articles collected under this cover, but in this age when syntheses abound it was not the editor’s aim to develop another one. The contributions to the volume are regrouped in five sections, some more united than the others. The first section is the most tightly knit presenting the results of a collaborative project coordinated by Vincent Déroche. It explores the different versions of a “many shaped” polemical treatise (Dialogica polymorpha antiiudaica) preserved—and edited here—in Greek and Slavonic. Anti-Jewish polemics flourished in the seventh century for a reason. In the centuries-long debate opposing the “New” and the “Old” Israel, the latter’s rejection by God was grounded in an irrefutable empirical proof: God had expelled the “Old” Israel from its promised land and given it to the “New.” In the first half of the seventh century, however, this reasoning was shattered, first by the Persian conquest of the Holy Land, which could be viewed as a passing trial, and then by the Arab conquest, which appeared to last. -

Donner University of Chicago Dear Friends and Colleagues, It is my distinct privilege to provide you with a copy of the eleventh Far- hat J. Ziadeh Distinguished Lecture in Arab and Islamic Studies, “How Ecumenical Was Early Islam?” delivered by Fred M. Donner on April 29, 2013. The Ziadeh Fund was formally endowed in 2001. Since that time, with your support, it has allowed us to strengthen our educational reach and showcase the most outstanding scholarship in Arab and Islamic Studies, and to do so always in honor of our dear colleague Farhat Ziadeh, whose contributions to the fields of Islamic law, Arabic language, and Islamic Studies are truly unparalleled. Farhat J. Ziadeh was born in Ramallah, Palestine, in 1917. He received his B.A. from the American University of Beirut in 1937 and his LL.B. from the University of London in 1940. He then attended Lincoln’s Inn, London, where he became a Barrister-at-Law in 1946. In the final years of the British Mandate, he served as a Magistrate for the Government of Palestine before eventually moving with his family to the United States. He was appointed Professor of Arabic and Islamic Law at Princeton University, where he taught until 1966, at which time he moved to the University of Washington. The annual lectureship in his name is a fitting tribute to his international reputation and his national service to the discipline of Arabic and Islam- ic Studies. -

AL-ʿUṢŪR AL-WUSṬĀ 25 (2017) THE JOURNAL OF MIDDLE EAST MEDIEVALISTS About Middle East Medievalists (MEM) is an international professional non-profit association of scholars interested in the study of the Islamic lands of the Middle East during the medieval period (defined roughly as 500-1500 C.E.). MEM officially came into existence on 15 November 1989 at its first annual meeting, held in Toronto. It is a non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Illinois. MEM has two primary goals: to increase the representation of medieval scholarship at scholarly meetings in North America and elsewhere by co-sponsoring panels; and to foster communication among individuals and organizations with an interest in the study of the medieval Middle East. −אء/Vefeyât/Obituary Patricia CRONE (28 Mart 1945-11 Temmuz 2015) İslâmî ilimler bilhassa İslâm tarihi alanında yaptığı şarkiyat çalışmaları ile bilinen Danimarka asıllı Ameri- kalı araştırmacı Patricia Crone, 2011 yılında teşhis ko- nulan akciğer kanseri sebebiyle 11 Temmuz 2015’te New Jersey, Princeton’da 70 yaşında öldü. Patricia Crone, Danimarka’nın Lejre kentinin Kyn- delose adlı kasabasında 28 Mart 1945’te dünyaya geldi. 1969 yılında Kopenhag Üniversitesi’nde lisans eğitimini tamamladı. Ardından Fransızca öğrenmek için Paris’e ve sonrasında İngilizceyi geliştirmek için Londra’ya git- meyi istedi. Londra’daki King’s College’da occasional student (misafir öğrenci) olarak kabul edildi. Medieval European History (Ortaçağ Avrupa Tarihi) okudu ve kilise-devlet ilişkileri alanında derslere devam etti. Londra Üniversi- tesi School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)’ta öğrenim görmeye baş- ladı. Burada Arapça, Farsça, Süryanice öğrendi. SOAS’ta Bernard Lewis danış- manlığında Emevîler döneminde mevâlî üzerine çalıştığı doktorasını 1974’de bitirdi. Doktorasını bitirir bitirmez yine aynı üniversitede Warbung Insti- tute’de araştırma görevlisi olarak çalışmaya başladı. 1977 yılında Oxford Üni- versitesi’nde İslâm tarihi alanında Öğretim Görevliliğine ve yine aynı üniver- sitede Jesus College’de öğretim üyeliğine başladı. Burada on üç sene ders ver- dikten sonra Cambridge Üniversitesi’nde Islamic Studies (İslâmî İlimler) ala- nında Yardımcı Doçent ve Gonville and Caius College’de öğretim üyesi olarak çalıştı (1990-1992). THE BAPTISM OF EDWIN, KING OF NORTHUMBRIA: A NEW ANALYSIS OF THE BRITISH TRADITION CAITLIN CORNING* George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon SINCE THE NINTH CENTURY, at the latest, two versions of Edwin's baptism have existed. The more familiar one, found in Bede's Historia Ecclesiastica and the Anonymous Vita Gregorii, claims that Edwin was baptized by Paulinus, a member of the papal mission.' The British sources, however, give a different version of events. The HistoriaBrittonum and the Annates Cambriae record that it was Rhun, son of Urien, who was the baptizer.' An attempt to assess the validity of the British claim is critical because it has important ramifications in the relationship between Northumbria and the Kingdom of Rheged in the early seventh century. -

contents 1 INTROduCTION Nicolai Sinai and Angelika Neuwirth The academic discipline of Qurʾanic studies today is most strikingly characterized, not by any impressive scholarly achievements of the field itself, which has been appropriately diagnosed by Fred Donner as being “in a state of disarray,”1 but by the large-scale interest of the media that the Qurʾan’s origin and interpretation have solicited dur- ing the last decade or so 2 Indeed, the lacunae of the field—impossible to overlook when confronted with the impressive list of what has been achieved in biblical or classical studies—have developed into a veritable litany: There is no critical edition of the text, no free access to all of the relevant manuscript evidence, no clear conception of the cultural and linguistic profile of the milieu within which it has emerged, no consensus on basic issues of methodology, a significant amount of mutual distrust among scholars, and—what is perhaps the single most important obstacle to scholarly progress—no adequate training of future students of the Qurʾan in the non-Arabic languages and literatures and cultural traditions that have undoubtedly shaped its historical context Yet the general public’s interest in Qurʾanic studies, oddly opposed as it may seem to the sorry state of the discipline itself, may not be an altogether negative thing; it holds out a vague promise of exciting discoveries that may attract younger scholars and inspire more senior 1 Donner, “Recent scholarship,” 29 2 The take-off point for this rather unprecedented rise
