>>Jocelyn Forest Selected as the 2006 NPF Championship Series MVP, Forest struck out seven batters over seven innings to give the New England Riptide a 2-0 victory over the Brakettes in the Championship game.

>>Vicky Galindo Chosen by the Chicago Bandits in 2005, Galindo was selected to the 2005 NPF All-Star team. Galindo hit .455 to lead the US National Team to the title game in the inaugural World Cup of Softball held in Oklahoma City in 2005 as well. She is currently an assistant coach at San Jose State University.

Golden Bears – Olympics Since softball’s inception as an Olympic sport in 1996, a Golden Bear player or coach has participated in each Olympiad. Cal players have also competed for various national teams during non-Olympic years. Michele Granger (USA), Gillian Boxx (USA) and Lisa Martinez (Puerto Rico) appeared in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta. In addition, former Cal assistant coach Kim Maher, a standout at Fresno State, played for the United States as well that summer. In 2004 Olympics in Athens, head coach Diane Ninemire, along with Lindsay James and Chloe Kloezeman, suited up for the inaugural Greek national team, while Nicole DiSalvio returned for a second stint with Italian national team.

>>Michele Granger A four-time All-American from 1989-93, Granger was a member of the USA Olympic team that won the gold medal at the 1996 in Atlanta. Granger squared off against former Golden Bear Lisa Martinez in the fi rst-ever Olympic softball game. Granger fi nished the Summer Games 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA and 25 strikeouts. Her wins came in the opener against Puerto Rico and in the gold medal game against China.

>>Others...Jennifer Deering was hired as an assistant coach at Boston University this season. A member of the 2002 national championship team, Deer- ing most recently served as the head varsity softball coach at Piedmont High School. Deering’s responsibilities as an assistant will include working with the pitching staff and spearheading BU’s recruiting efforts. End of the 2007 Season The ASA announced its 25 fi nalists (Sutton did not make it on the fi nalist ballot). A player did not have to appear on the initial watch list to be considered as a Top-25 fi nalist, but once the Top-25 is named the remaining fi nalist must be selected from that list. Just days before the start of post- season play, a list of 10 fi nalists will be named and released on May 9. The fi nal three fi nalists will be announced May 23 while the winner of the 2006 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2007 NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

The `07 Schedule The 2007 California softball schedule had the Golden Bears traveling throughout the country, facing 18 opponents that made postseason appearances in the 2006 season. Of those 18 opponents, 14 fi nished the season ranked in top 25 national polls (ESPN.com/USA Softball and USA Today/NFCA). The 2007 schedule also included 15 home games at Levine-Fricke Field, including 11 Pac-10 Confer- ence match-ups. In the Tuscaloosa Regional, Cal tangled with a Florida State team that had 44 wins, while facing an Alabama team that was ranked No. 1 in the country towards the end of the season.

The Golden Bears have a total of 761.5 points, trailing only Stanford, which has 997.5 points. Wisconsin is third with 753.5 points, followed by Michigan (731.25) and Penn State (704.33). During the winter sports seasons, Cal picked up points in seven of its programs that compete during the term. Women’s swimming & diving posted the highest finish with a third-place showing at the NCAA championships. Other programs to finish in the Top 10 nationally were men’s gymnastics, which took seventh, and men’s swim- ming & diving, which was eighth. In addition, the Bears were 15th in women’s indoor track & field, 19th in women’s gymnastics, 19th in men’s indoor track & field and tied for 33rd in women’s .
