First Reading: The Pastor’s Keyboard - Msgr. Richard Huneger 66:10-14c Responsorial: July 4, 1776, marked the proverbial "beginning" of the Revolutionary War, which led, on the Psalm 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20 basis of the Declaration of Independence (from ), to our Independence and Sovereign- Second Reading: ty as a nation. Well, almost, because it took awhile, and a failed experiment, for the "former colo- Galatians 6:14-18 nies" to figure out how to become these "United States" of America. The government was estab- : lished with a keen distrust toward any "national" or "centralized" power, and with the hopes that the :1-12, 17-20 limited powers invested in the national governing institutions would be used in order to maintain and enhance the flourishing of the several States. Restrictions were placed on the federal govern- ment (and indirectly on the State governments) with respect to individuals (Bill of Rights), and some

restrictions on the federal government (such as "no establishment of religion") over time were also “Let the peace of Christ applied to the states. For almost half a century after our Constitution, it was still permitted at the control your hearts; state level to have an "official" religion in order to qualify for full citizenship rights and opportunities. Let the word of Christ dwell Massachusetts was the last to "disestablish" its State Church, and those who opposed this were in your body.” called "disestablishmentarians" and their line of thinking "disestablishmentarianism," and that of those who opposed them “antidisestablishmentarianism.” arguably the longest word in English (when I was in grade school), although the favorite word for Anagrams was "grandiloquence," in virtue of having all 5 vowels. In Our Parish Our religious liberty experiment, born of the passionate desire of the original pilgrims and colo- nists for freedom to express their own religions (different in each colony) has led to a kind of official respect and tolerance, but also marginalization to the level of the personal and private, of religious discourse and action. And our own religious liberty as Catholics (as well as that of others) has suf- Baptism—Rite of Christian fered a certain erosion in recent years. Benedict XVI back in 2012 asked the US to Initiation make it a primary goal to uphold the autonomy of religious individuals and institutions from govern- Adrian Xavier Saenz ment encroachment, and to avoid the silencing of the religious voice in public discussion. It only Allison Katherine Garibay makes sense in a Democracy, where the ultimate compass for society is the conscience of the Wedding—Rite of Christian people, who decide whether elected officials or legislation is "moral" or "fair," and on the basis of Marriage conscience, vote to change the rules of our common life. Without some consensus on where the Miguel A. Lopez Tenis North Pole is, we are in trouble, for then, there is no basis we hold in common for critiquing what is & going on. If whatever the majority decide on is "right," no matter what their decision is, then there is Manuela Franco Guzman no standard by which our laws can make "moral progress" and become "better" in terms of guiding a society justly. When our country was founded, the Fathers were told we would fail, because the "whim of the populace" was too uncertain a rudder to guide the ship of state. James Monroe ar- Funeral—Rite of Christian gued that we did indeed have a chance of success because 99% of Americans held to the same Burial ethical vision (these were Protestants, with the remaining 1% consisting of Jews, Catholics, and a Christine “Chrissy” Weston Marie Mailliard few Muslims). With the fracturing of that consensus comes an uncertain trumpet in the body politic, in its ability to succeed.
