ATV excursions Whitewater rafting Bicycle touring henever i would hear “Oregon” and “vacation” in the same sentence, I’d always think of the state’s fabled shore, character- ized by dramatic cliff s, stretches of family-friendly sandy beach, and the endless aquamarine of the Pacifi c Ocean. But I found WI’ve been short-changing the state—and myself—by only hugging the coast when visiting Oregon. A splendid vacation bounty waits within the wild, high-desert beauty of inner Oregon and the gracious hospitality of WorldMark Running Y. Th e defi nition of “high desert” is fairly loose—it’s basically any terrain with a warm climate, sparse rainfall and an el- evation of more than 2,000 feet. By this classifi cation, more than half of Oregon’s landmass would be considered high des- ert, but Oregon’s high desert is actually more compelling and has greater variety than this label would suggest. It is a blend of craggy mountains, striking canyons, scrubby prairies, fi sh-fi lled streams, dense forests and vast stretches of wilderness. WorldMark Running Y, near Klamath Falls, is in mountain territory, situated in the heart of southern Oregon’s Cas- cade range. It’s a nearly 500-mile jour- ney from my home in the Seattle area,
