The board’s approval comes as a result of the fund raising success to date for the project.

“On the strength of the financial commitment from ODAF, we are now able to proceed with the selection for services to design this state- of-the-art basketball practice facility,” says Dr. Wood Selig, athletic director. “In turn, this step will allow us to establish an overall project schedule, and we will begin the selection process for our design firm in early 2014.” “We are grateful to the donors who have contributed to this project, and especially to the Mitchum family. While we are pleased with our fundraising to date, we still have a number of prospects to visit in order to complete our fundraising,” adds Selig.

The basketball practice facility will be located behind the Ted Constant Convocation Center along Monarch Way and will be connected to the venue. The building will serve as the home for the men’s and women’s basketball coaching staffs, and will include a practice gymnasium, sports medicine and sports performance and enhancement centers, and NBA style locker rooms.

“One of the reasons I was attracted to ODU was the tremendous support of the program from our donors, corporate sponsors and season ticket holders. This complex is a “difference maker” for our program, and will distinguish us from others in Conference USA,” says head men’s basketball coach Jeff Jones. “Facilities such as this reflect institutional commitment to men’s and women’s basketball, and serves to further elevate our program.”

“With the addition of the Mitchum facility and its connection to the “Ted” and our student-athlete housing, we believe this building provides our student athletes the luxury to live, practice and play with a one-block radius, which is rare in college basketball”, says ODU women’s basketball coach Karen Barefoot. “We are extremely grateful to the donors who have made this project a reality.”

RECORD NUMBER OF MONARCH DEAN'S LIST STUDENTS TO BE HONORED AT FEB. 27TH

NORFOLK - A record number of Old Dominion University student athletes earned Dean’s List honors for the Fall, 2013 semester with Grade Point Averages of 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Thirty per cent, or 144 student athletes, achieved the honor and will be recognized on Feb. 27 during halftime activities of the Monarchs vs. Marshall basketball game at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

“I commend our student-athletes, coaches, and academic advising staff for the remarkable academic performances by our teams and student athletes during the fall semester. Not only are our student athletes dedicated to their sports, but they are truly committed to pursuit of academic excellence exemplified by the wonderful academic achievements of our 450 student athletes. Our coaches continue to do an excellent job in identifying strong academic performers in addition to being outstanding athletes,” says ODU director of athletics Dr. Wood Selig.

Of the 473 athletes enrolled at ODU last semester, 16 earned perfect 4.0’s, while 277 (or 58%) posted GPA’s of a 3.0 or higher.

Twelve of the Monarchs’ 18 teams, including all nine women’s sports, posted combined GPA’s of a 3.0 or higher, led by women’s golf (3.34), women’s swimming (3.30), women’s tennis (3.30), field hockey (3.26), women’s soccer (3.26), lacrosse (3.18), men’s tennis (3.12), women’s rowing (3.12), women’s sailing (3.07), women’s basketball (3.04), and baseball and wrestling (3.0). 2013 - 2014 MONARCH BASKETBALL OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY ODU TO PLAY IN 2014 VIRGIN ISLAND PARADISE JAM BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT The tournament directors at Basketball Travelers Inc. announced today that Old Dominion University will be in the 2014 fields of the Ezybonds Global Payments U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. The eight-team field in the 15th annual event include: Clemson, Gardner Webb, Illinois State, Louisiana State, Nevada, Old Dominion, Seton Hall, and Weber State.

The men’s tournament takes place annually the week before Thanksgiving and this year will be held November 21-24 at the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas, USVI. This will be the Monarchs third trip to this tournament.

Old Dominion reached the championship game in 2005, falling to Wisconsin. The Monarchs returned in 2010 and defeated Xavier in the title game. Clemson has been to the islands twice before placing 2nd in the inaugural men’s tournament in 2001 and 3rd in 2010.

“We are obviously very excited about competing in such a prestigious tournament,” said ODU head coach Jeff Jones. “We have a very strong tournament field which I think our fans will enjoy watching.”
