Der Brite James Corner, ge- boren 1961, zählt weltweit zu den renommiertesten Landschaftsar- chitekten. Er studierte Landschaftsarchitektur in England und in den USA an der University of Pennsylvania, wo er 1986 seinen Master- abschluss erwarb. Nach erfolgreicher Mitarbeit in international führ- enden Landschaftsarchitekturbüros wurde er 1988 als Professor an die renommierte University of Pennsylvania berufen und leitete von 2000 bis 2012 als Dekan das Department of Landscape Architecture an der School of Design in Philadelphia. Corner ist Gastprofessor an zahlreichen internationalen Universitäten und stellte seine mehrfach ausgezeichneten Arbeiten bereits in vielen Museen aus. Er ist Autor, Co-Autor und Herausgeber von vielen Fachpublika- tionen, die in Fachkreisen höchste Wertschätzung erfahren, weil sie weitsichtig das Wirken der Landschaftsarchitektur im Anthropo- zän untersuchen. Zu den erfolgreichsten Veröffentlichungen zählt Recovering Landscape: Essays in Contemporary Landscape Architecture (Princeton 1999), in welchem wichtige Erkenntnisse zum Umbau und zur Revitalisierung ehemals industriell genutzter Landschaften zusammengetragen und weiterentwickelt werden. Research was performed on three former iron and steel works areas located in the Ruhr region in Germany: one of the Thyssen's ironworks in Duisburg – Meiderich, the area of steelworks complex Gute-Hoffnungs-Hütte in Oberhausen and the area of the iron and steel works Phönix in Dortmund - Hörde. Methods were applied specific to urban morphology. For each object of study a comparative analysis of the town plan was carried out. Town plans were compared before and after the revitalization process and special attention was paid to land use. This allowed us to observe morphological and functional changes which occurred as a result of the revitalization of the study areas. The research showed that the revitalization of post-industrial space may be conducted in many different directions but irrespective of that it has a huge impact on the evolution of urban space in both a morphological and a functional way.

Feedback has been solicited on a range of topics including park uses, park themes, challenges, opportunities, and the site. Results from 435 surveys and approximately 200 community members who attended the open house are summarized below. Data analysis and comprehensive additional comments can be found in a series of appendices attached to this summary report. Uses A clear majority of both survey respondents and workshop attendees envision Palisades Garden Walk as a place for passive recreation with “Areas for Picnicking, Lounging, Sitting, Reading, Relaxing and Viewing” as the primary use. Survey respondents rank “Pathways for Walking, Running, and Cycling” and “Areas for Cultural Events” as second most desirable uses, while workshop attendees favor “Horticulture and Display Gardens,” “Public Art,” and “Cafes.” For Town Square, both survey respondents and workshop attendees identify “Areas for Organized Civic Events and Activities” as the park’s most important use. The design team will develop alternative design schemes, which all support passive recreation for Palisades Garden Walk and flexible civic event space for Town Square. Various ratios of additional uses will also be explored.

Postmodern theories, philosophy influenced the language of the postmodern landscape architecture and got materialized in the use of narratives, eclecticism, the Rhizome-principle. Postmodern landscape composition can be associated with anti-hierarchy, unusual structures, landforms, and playful moods. Oct. 2020 When urban greening becomes an accumulation strategy: Exploring the ecological, social and economic calculus of the High Line Natalie Gulsrud and Henriette Steiner University of Copenhagen, Denmark Abstract The canonical design project the High Line is built on an abandoned elevated freight- rail structure that winds through some of New York City’s largest post-industrial districts. With over 80 million visits since its opening in 2009, the High Line is one of the world’s most visited urban parks. The product of a collaboration spearheaded by landscape architect James Corner, it has become one of the most celebrated symbols of landscape urbanism. Despite its enormous success and widespread acclaim, the High Line has also been criticized for its inattention to issues of equality. Our contribution is to unpack how the neoliberal logic implicit in the High Line effect is delivered as a process of socioecological subtraction that ultimately leads to the accumulation of capital for a select few, and to ask how urban designers might rethink the High Line model to take into account more redistributive principles of justice.

Heritage Adrift: Designing for North Brother Island in the Face of Climate Change Abstract The smaller islands of the archipelago of New York City (NYC) have built heritage that reflects the history of quarantining undesirable and vulnerable populations in institutions such as hospitals, asylums, and prisons. North Brother Island (NBI) in the East River is one such place, home to Riverside Hospital and other institutions from 1885-1963. The NYC archipelago is vulnerable to multiple effects of climate change including sea-level rise, shoreline erosion, increased flooding, and storm surge. In order to confront the dangers that climate change presents to the built heritage on NBI, a hybrid approach of preservation interventions and landscape architecture strategies are needed. Using a values-based preservation approach as the foundation, I developed a projective design to address shoreline erosion, building stabilization, selective deconstruction, and public access to NBI, which is currently managed as a bird sanctuary.
