African dancehall artists may very well represent the most exciting (and least- r e c o g n i z e d ) m o vement happening in dancehall today. Africa is so huge, culturally rich and diverse that it is difficult to generalize about the musical happenings. Yet a recent musical sampling of the continent shows that dancehall is begin- ning to emerge as a powerful African musical form in its own right. Aotearoa NZ is no exception to this trend wherein the direct action message that Bob Marley preached to ‘get up stand up’ supported the radical engagements in the public sphere prompted by Black Power.1 In many ways, Marley’s message and demeanour vindicated the radical oppositional strategies that activists had deployed against the Babylon system in contradistinction to the Te Aute Old Boy tradition of tactful engagement. No surprise, then, that roots reggae was sometimes met with consternation by elders, although much of the issue revolved specifically around the smoking of Marijuana, the wisdom weed.2 Yet some activists and gang members paid closer attention to the trans- mission, through the music, of a faith cultivated in the Caribbean, which professed Ethiopia as the root and Haile Selassie I as the agent of redemption. And they decided to make it their faith too. -

Créolité and Réunionese Maloya: From ‘In-between’ to ‘Moorings’ Stephen Muecke, University of New South Wales An old Malbar is wandering in the countryside at night, and, seeing a light, approaches a cabin.1 It is open, so he goes in. He is invited to have a meal. No questions are asked; but he sings a ‘busted maloya’ [maloya kabosé] that speaks of his desire to open his wings and fly away, to accept the invitation to sleep in the cabin, to fall into the arms of the person narrating the ballad, and to weep. The whole company sings the ‘busted maloya.’2 Malbar is the name for Tamils descended from indentured labourers from parts of South India including the Malabar Coast and Pondicherry, where the French had another colony. Estimated to number 180,000, these diasporic Tamils had lost their language and taken up the local lingua franca, Creole, spoken among the Madagascans, French, Chinese and Africans making up the population of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Creole, as a language and set of cultural forms, is not typical of many locations in the Indian Ocean. While the central islands of Mauritius, the Seychelles, Rodriguez, Agalega, Chagos and Réunion have their distinct varieties of French Creole language, Creole is not a concept that has currency in East Africa, Madagascar or South Asia. Brown As we approached the vicinity of the tent we heard the wailing voices, dominated by church women, singing old Jamaican spirituals. The heart beat riddim of the drums pulsed and reverberated, giving life to the chorus. “Alleluia!” “Praise God!” Indecipherable glossolalia punctu- ated the emphatic praise. The sounds were foreboding. Even at eleven years old, I held firmly to the disciplining of my body that my Catholic primary school so carefully cultivated. As people around me praised God and yelled obscenely in unknown tongues, giving their bodies over to the spirit in ecstatic dancing, marching, and rolling, it was imperative that I remained in control of my body. What if I too was suddenly overtaken by the spirit? Julian Henriques Sonic Bodies: Reggae Sound Systems, Performance Techniques & Ways of Knowing Preamble: Thinking Through Sound It hits you, but you feel no pain, instead, pleasure.1 This is the visceral experience of audition, to be immersed in an auditory volume, swimming in a sea of sound, between cliffs of speakers towering almost to the sky, sound stacked up upon sound - tweeters on top of horns, on top of mid, on top of bass, on top of walk-in sub bass bins (Frontispiece). There is no escape, not even thinking about it, just being there alive to, in and as the excess of sound. Trouser legs flap to the base line and internal organs resonate to the finely tuned frequencies, as the vibrations of the music excite every cell in your body. This is what I call sonic dominance.2 This explodes with all the multi sensory intensity of image, touch, movement and smell - the dance crews formations sashaying across the tarmac in front of the camera lights, the video projection screens and the scent of beer rum, weed, sweat and drum chicken floating on the tropical air. The sound of the reggae dancehall session calls out across the city blocks, or countryside hills to draw you in. It brings you to yourself, to and through your senses and it brings you to and with others sharing these convivial joys - out on the street under the stars in downtown Kingston, Jamaica. Such a scene is literally the dance of the sonic bodies to which this book attends. Sonic bodies are fine-tuned, as with the phonographic instrument of the sound system “set” of equipment. -

Papa Rosko pulls together a wide spectrum of genres on his debut album, fusing elements of rock, pop, alternative, Latin, and country music into a seamless reggae sound. The self-titled album was recorded over the course of two and half years between studios in South Florida and Kingston, Jamaica. The results are an impressive album filled with original songs and a pair of country-reggae fusion covers featuring reggae and dancehall legends. The album kicks off with Papa Rosko’s take on the classic Johnny Cash song “Folsom Prison Blues,” featuring Toots Hibbert of Toots & the Maytals as special guest vocalist (Toots famously wrote his own prison song “54-46 That’s My Number,” which gets a shout out at the end of the song here.) Another cover on the album is of the timeless song “When You Say Nothing At All,” featuring Jamaican dancehall star Gyptian as guest vocalist. The song has been an international hit for three different artists (Keith Whitley, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Ronan Keating) spanning three different decades. The iconic tune has always been done as a slow ballad, but Papa Rosko brings his unique style to it, picking up the tempo and immersing it in an island vibe. -

1 - Présentation Dossier d’accompagnement de la conférence / concert du vendredi 10 octobre 2008 proposée dans le cadre du projet d’éducation artistique des Trans et des Champs Libres. “Le reggae” Conférence de Alex Mélis Concert de Keefaz & D-roots Dans la galaxie des musiques actuelles, le reggae occupe une place singulière. Héritier direct du mento, du calypso et du ska, son avènement en Jamaïque à la fin des années soixante doit beaucoup aux musiques africaines et cubaines, mais aussi au jazz et à la soul. Et puis, il est lui-même à la source d'autres esthétiques comme le dub, qui va se développer parallèlement, et le ragga, qui apparaîtra à la fin des années quatre-vingt. Au cours de cette conférence, nous retracerons la naissance du reggae sur fond de "sound systems", de culture rastafari, et des débuts de l'indépendance de la Jamaïque. Nous expliquerons ensuite de quelle façon le reggae des origi- nes - le "roots reggae" - s'est propagé en s'"occidentalisant" et en se scindant en plusieurs genres bien distincts, qui vont du très brut au très sophistiqué. Enfin, nous montrerons tous les liens qui se sont tissés au fil des années entre la famille du reggae et celles du rock, du rap, des musiques électroniques, de la chanson, sans oublier des musiques spécifiques d'autres régions du globe comme par exemple le maloya de La Réunion. Alors, nous comprendrons comment la musique d'une petite île des Caraïbes est devenue une musique du monde au sens le plus vrai du terme, puisqu'il existe aujourd'hui des scènes reggae et dub très vivaces et toujours en évolution sur tous les continents, des Amériques à l'Afrique en passant par l'Asie et l'Europe, notamment en Angleterre, en Allemagne et en France. -

In 2006 he released the Album ‘Legal Stranger’ which contains besides hits like ‘Mama Africa’ and ‘Tell me why’ the song ‘Doubting me’ which was nominated ‘Best reggae song of the year’ at the Ghana national Music Awards. In 2008 his third album “Prophecy” was published which was a compilation of powerful songs such as “No pain no gain”, “Give me back all the natural resources” or the hit tune “Hot and Cold” featuring the British – Ghanaian Rapper Sway. As his reputation further grew across continental Europe, Black Prophet has been constantly invited to play at various shows and festivals, such as the Oland Roots festival (Sweden), Rottodom Sunsplash Festival (Spain), Reggae Geel Festival (Belgium) or the Rastaplas Festival (Netherlands). In 2010 the gifted reggae artist won the Benelux – Final of the European Reggae Contest. During his latest European tour with the Jamaican Artist Turbulence in February 2012 the conscious reggae musician showcased his newest album “Tribulations” which offers a unique fusion of African and Jamaican Reggae elements with traditional African music and hip – hop beats.
