Children Formation Program Family Handbook 2017 - 2018

“Go, and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age”. Mt. 28, 19-20

Our Mission It is our mission to share the Gospel and to bring the children, youth and adults of our community close to the message of Jesus Christ, so they can know him, love him and serve him.

General Expectations It is expected that each family become actively involved in our Religious Education Program and in order to model a living, conscious and active Christian faith and to reinforce the values and attitudes for living that faith. The family and their children also agree to act in accordance with these values and attitudes.

Our Program We welcome children 4 through 17 years old. Two years of continuous Religion Education is required for sacramental preparation (First Holy Communion and Confirmation). Weekly attendance to Sunday Liturgy is strongly encouraged. Children gather weekly to foster a living faith in the Lord through study and application of God’s word to their lives.

The reception of a sacrament is an important step in the process of Christian initiation, which begins at Baptism. A sacrament is a physical way of receiving God's grace. This is why careful study and preparation are primary important. It is part of our Catholic Faith to celebrate the 7 sacraments. The sacraments were instituted and given to the Church by Christ. In the sacraments we meet Christ and He gives us sanctifying grace. (CCC# 1131)

Pre-K, K and 1st Our Religious Education starts in Pre-K, K and 1st. Children in these grades will learn about God's love through Jesus teachings, basic prayers, living the faith and more. These sessions are held on Sundays. We begin with the 9:00 a.m. mass followed by formation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. This class does not qualify for the two years of sacramental preparation.

Baptism of Children 7 years old and older - (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) adapted for children) In order to follow the Catholic Church’s general guidelines regarding the established age of reason and to verify the intention to prepare and carry out the duties of Christianity, any child seven to eleven years old will be prepared for Baptism and First Communion. These sessions are held on Sundays. We begin with the 9:00 a.m. mass followed by instructions from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Children 12 years and older will be prepared for Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. These sessions are held on Sundays. We begin with the 11:00 a.m. mass and then the sessions from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. After showing an appropriate degree of readiness the unbaptized child will receive the sacraments during the Easter Vigil Mass. To learn more about the RCIA, visit www.usccb.org.

First Reconciliation and First Communion For children between the ages of 7 and 11, we offer two years of First Communion preparation. In order to register for these, your child must have received the Sacrament of Baptism. In order to register for the second year preparation, your child must have completed their first year preparation here or at any other Catholic Church. If your child completed the first year preparation at another parish, you will need to bring a letter from that parish stating that your child completed the first year preparation in order to register your child in our Religious Education. These sessions are held on Sundays. We begin with the 9:00 a.m. mass and then the session from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

After First Communion Children that have already received their First Communion and are under the age of 12 may continue growing in their faith. Children in these groups are in 4th, 5th or 6th grade. These sessions are held on Sundays. We 2 begin with the 11:00 a.m. mass and then the sessions from12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. This class does not qualify for the two years of sacramental preparation.

Confirmation For children between the ages of 12 and 17 that have received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation and First Communion, we offer two years of Confirmation preparation. We begin with the 11:00 a.m. mass and then the sessions from12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation - (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) adapted for children) Children between the ages of 12 and 17 that have received the Sacrament of Baptism will be prepared to receive First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation through the RCIA. After showing an appropriate degree of readiness the child will receive First Reconciliation in the parish and sometime later First Communion and Confirmation at St. Mary Cathedral or our parish. To learn more about the RCIA, visit www.usccb.org. These sessions are held on Sundays. We begin with the 11:00 a.m. mass and then the sessions from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Custodial Rights In the case of divorced parents, the Religious Education Program will interact with the parent who has legal custody of the child. The Religious Education Program ordinarily will deal with the parent having legal custody in matters of absence, tardiness, truancy, early dismissal, disciplinary issues, Religious Education Program records, authorization to receive sacraments, etc. Access to in-person conferences and the records and information pertaining to a minor child, including, but not limited to, Religious Education Program records, may not be denied to a parent because the parent is not the child’s primary residential parent. Full rights apply to either parent unless a court order specifically revokes these rights. In the latter case, it is the custodial parent’s responsibility to provide evidence of such a court order.

Registration Registration must be paid in full prior to the end of class. See the calendar for the due date. Please remember we rely on your generosity and financial support to keep our parish open. We acknowledge that today’s economy is very difficult for most of us, and each family has to prioritize their budget. In the same way, our parish has to work with a budget to keep serving this community in the best of our capabilities.

To make a payment you may stop by the office or mail your check in with your child’s name on it. To find out your balance you may call or stop by the office.

Returning students must register every year!!

Supplies One two-pocket folder, pencils, and one ream of printer paper. The ream of paper must be brought to the office.

Parents Where can a child better learn a spirit of prayer than from the teaching and example of his/her own parents? With this in mind, it is your responsibility as a parent to:  attend Sunday Mass with your child  bring your child closer to Jesus through day-to-day prayer

3  pray with your child  be an example for your child  make sure your child knows the basic prayers of the Catholic Faith  review what your child learned on Sunday throughout the week  if any homework was assigned, make sure it is returned the following Sunday  make sure your child is on time  make sure your child goes to bed early and has a good breakfast in the morning  ensure that your child is accounted for  ensure that your child knows that under NO circumstances he/she is allowed to walk unsupervised on church grounds (church, parking lot, bathrooms, Parish Hall, etc.)

From time to time progress reports may be sent home. Progress reports are to be viewed as information to be used. Review the report with your child in a calm, relaxed atmosphere. Notice first the positive things and recognize the effort involved. If the progress is not as expected, speak with your child and find out how your child feels about it. Together explore ways to improve. Be positive in your approach, showing your interest and support. Let progress reports be a tool, not a judgment. As part of your responsibility and involvement in your child’s faith formation, it is crucial that progress reports are signed and returned. There will also be reminders and notes sent home. Please always ask your child.

Please keep in mind that all communication must be directly with the catechist (Religious Formation/ Education teacher). No other arrangements are to be made through the Coordinator or the Office, unless a catechist is not addressing your concern.

Parents with concerns about a catechist should first attempt to address the concern with the catechist. Only after such attempts have failed, should the parent contact the parish's Director/Coordinator of Religious Education. If the parent continues to be dissatisfied, the parent should contact the pastor.

Parents Meetings We will have Parents meeting usually held on the 1st Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m., see the calendar. At these meetings we will cover what your child is learning in class and will inform you of ways to receive participation hours. The purpose of these meetings is to enhance the task of the parents who are the first faith sharing and catechist. These meetings will also assist you in your child's faith formation at home.

Parent Participation This is a great opportunity for you to get involved in your child’s classroom, activities and community. All that we have and all that we are come as a gift from our very generous God. We each have a responsibility to make a plan for how we will return a portion of our gifts of time, talent, and treasure in service to others. As parents, it is important that you help your children recognize and nurture the gifts received. We each make a difference when we share our gifts.

All parents that plan to physically help in any activity must complete a volunteer application and turn it in to the office prior to volunteering. If you will be working with children you are also required to do a VIRTUS “Protecting God's Children for Adults” training program which is provided at many locations throughout the Archdiocese of Miami and successfully pass a background check by being fingerprinted (every five years).

We ask you to participate at least 20 hours per family per year in parish's activities. Parents must bring their log sheet to the parish office to redeem hours. See the calendar for the due date. You may do this as often as you like throughout the year. Make sure the person at the office signs and dates it and gives you the original back. DO NOT leave your original!!

4 It is the Parents responsibility to look for participation opportunities, and to bring their log sheet each time to be signed by the activity coordinator.

Ways to Participate  Attend Monthly Parents Meetings = 1 hour  Attend workshops, Rosary rallies, presentations, retreats, festival, Lent/Advent services (Stations of the Cross, penance services), etc.  Cleaning  Service before/during/after parish activities  50 copies (for office or class) = 1 hour  Additional raffle books sold = 1 hour  Donate supplies/food [tissues, hand sanitizer, copy paper, post-it notes, pens, stapler, staples, paper clips, scissors, folders, lose leaf paper, chalk/eraser, dry erase marker/eraser, printer cartridge HP Laser Jet P2035n, garden mulch, garden/office trash bags, cleaning/restroom supplies, food/drinks/cutlery, etc.] You must bring in the original receipts, $10.00 = 1 hour.

Fundraiser At least once a year we will have a parish raffle to raise funds for different projects. Each family will receive a book of tickets to sell. Additional books that are sold will be counted as 1 hour of participation per book.

Confession/Reconciliation Children that have already received the Sacrament of Communion are encouraged to attend confession on a regular basis. The Catholic Church requires that all Catholics attend confession at least once a year if they are conscience of mortal sin. However, the Church strongly encourages regular participation in the sacrament of Confession, especially during Advent and Lent or prior to receiving another sacrament such as Confirmation or Marriage.

A sacrament is a physical way of receiving God's grace. Confession is one of the seven sacraments, and like all the sacraments, confession is a gift given by Jesus to the Church. Confession is a beautiful sacrament. In John chapter 20, verses 20-23, Jesus Christ gave the apostles the authority to forgive and retain sins. This authority is still with us today as it has been passed down through time from the apostles to the Bishops and Priests.

Advent and Lent Services All children are encouraged to attend the following with a parent(s):  Lent and Advent services/masses.  The Stations of the Cross held every Friday evening during Lent.  Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday and Good Friday Services. All of these will be announced in the bulletin and Masses. These days are not holy days of obligation, but they are VERY important services in the life of a practicing Catholic. ALL Catholics are STRONGLY encouraged to attend these services. Our goal in all of this is to provide the children, parents and families with as many Catholic experiences as possible.

Going to Mass and Class The celebration of the Eucharist is a gift for all Catholics. Sunday Mass attendance helps you and your child grow in the Catholic Faith. Our Religious Education Program is centered in the Eucharist; therefore all children enrolled in the program are encouraged to attend Mass every Sunday with their parents. It is the Parents responsibility that the children attend mass. After Mass, the children go to class.

5 Envelopes At registration each child will receive a contribution envelope. The envelopes have two purposes: 1) Mass attendance, and 2) teach our children to share. When we do this while they are young, it becomes the way they choose to live their lives. As previously mentioned, all that we have and all that we are come as a gift from our very generous God. We each have a responsibility to make a plan for how we will return a portion of our gifts of time, talent, and treasure in service to others. As parents, it is important that you help your children recognize and nurture the gifts received. We each make a difference when we share our gifts.

Attendance In order for our program to be beneficial, we ask that children maintain a satisfactory attendance. More than three absences from class may result in repeating the year.

Tardiness Being on time is very important for the wellbeing of the whole community. The class will begin with Mass. Children should arrive at least 15 minutes before the Mass starts. When children are late it disrupts the Mass/class, not to mention your child will feel embarrassed. Sunday Mass attendance is the Parents responsibility, not the child's responsibility.

Readiness Determination Sacramental preparation is done to give the child and their family a sense of community, a rounder picture of what receiving the sacraments means, and what Christ expects of them. Readiness to celebrate a sacrament is determined by the following:  A desire to celebrate the sacrament  An age appropriate understanding of the sacrament  Participation in the liturgical life of the church  A basic awareness and growing understanding of who Jesus is A determination of readiness to celebrate the sacrament will be made by the pastor, child’s catechist and faith formation coordinator, along with the parent.

First Holy Communion and Confirmation Readiness Determination  Parent attendance to monthly meetings  Mass and class attendance  Parent and child attendance to the parent/child workshops  Envelope usage

First Holy Communion Requirements  In addition to the above mentioned, the child must have a great desire to receive Jesus, present in the Eucharist.  Attend 1st and 2nd Reconciliation.  Parent and child attendance to the First Communion retreat.  Parent and child attendance to Confession and Rehearsal.

Confirmation Requirements  In addition to the above mentioned the teen must have an understanding of what it means to live a Christian life and want to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  A sponsor certificate must be turned in to the catechist. See the calendar for the due date. This certificate will be provided to the teens in class in September. o The Catholic Church takes sponsorship very seriously. A sponsor is more than an honorary position. The role of the sponsor at Baptism or Confirmation is to be a living example of the faith. Unless one is an actual practicing Catholic, how can he or she be an "example of the faith? 6 o Sponsor must be a practicing Catholic, 16 years old or older, have received Baptism, Communion and Confirmation. If married, must be married in the Catholic Church or be single and without commitment. ( Law Chapter IV)  A TYPED saint report must be turned in to the catechist. See the calendar for the due date. The teens must choose a Patron Saint. Report needs to contain the following information in teen's OWN words and in this order: o Name of the Saint o Story of the Saint o Patron of o Feast day o Good deed o Why did you choose this Saint? o Prayer to the Saint  A TYPED letter for the Pastor must be turned in to the catechist. See the calendar for the due date. This letter must explain the following: o What can you say about yourself? o What are your talents or gifts? o Why do you want to be confirmed? o What are you thinking to do after confirmation for the church and the community?  Teens must participate in the Liturgy (Mass) Ministries ( server, choir, usher, and lector). The goal is to have the children experience the ministries. Ministry is an excellent opportunity to fulfill ones baptismal call of service to one another. The teens will attend workshops/rehearsal to receive formation and training by the ministries coordinators. They will then select one ministry to participate in for the rest of the year. They will be given a sheet to keep record. This sheet has to be turned in to the catechist. See the calendar for the due date.  Teens will be given an evaluation which covers basic Catholic teachings. A study guide will be distributed in class in September. The evaluation will be given in March. We encourage parents to review this information with their teen so that they are prepared. All of the information on the evaluation will be covered in class, but review of the study guide will be very valuable.  Attend the Confirmation Retreat.  Parent, sponsor and teen attendance to Rehearsal.  Teens will have an interview with the Pastor accompanied by one parent.

Dress Code We are all part of an environment where we are trying to remove distractions so that we can concentrate on what GOD has brought us here to do. We do not want any child or adult to distract others by the way they dress, or to be distracted by the way others dress. Our way of dressing should be representative of who we are as Christians at all times. Modest attire is required. Should anyone choose to draw attention to themselves by dressing inappropriately, that person will be asked to change clothes.

Examples of immodest attire: shorts/dresses/skirts shorter than 1/4 above the thigh, ripped/graffiti covered clothing, low cut pants or tops (When you raise your arms you shouldn’t be able to see your stomach. When you bend down, you shouldn’t be able to see your underwear.), undershirts, cut-offs, or tanks with the wide-open armholes, shower shoes, shirts exposing the stomach or cleavage, pajamas, or anything with obscene signs, halter-tops, tube tops, tight clothes (Let your skin breath!), sagging pants, (Make sure your pants are not hanging low or revealing your undergarments please!), etc.

7 Discipline Catechists are VOLUNTEERS who are giving their time and effort for the benefit of the children. They have very limited time in which to do their lessons. They are not expected to deal with children who do not cooperate.

Children are expected to behave in a respectful and appropriate manner. It is a priority that children show respect for catechists, classmates, staff, and church property. Children using obscene language, physical violence, and disrespect to classmate, catechists, staff or vandalism will be sent to speak with the director/coordinator. Parents will be called immediately.

A child who engages in conduct, whether inside or outside the religious education program, that is contrary to the moral code of the Catholic Church may be asked to leave the program.

Code of Conduct  Always be respectful to self, others and other’s property.  Always tell the truth.  Always get permission from catechist and be escorted before leaving Mass, church, classroom, assigned area, etc.  Never go anywhere by yourself.  Always clean up your area before leaving.  Never chew gum in church/classroom.  Never drink or eat in classrooms.  Never run anywhere in the premises.

Personal Property Children using personal property (cellular phones, iPods, etc.) during Mass or class without permission will have the item confiscated.

Visitors Children are NOT permitted to bring family, friends or visitors to class who are not enrolled in our program.

Arrival Parents must accompany children to their classroom each morning and make sure they are accounted for. This is to ensure your child’s safety. Please drive slow and be extra careful to ensure safety.

Dismissals If your child is in the 1st block of class (10:00 to 11:15 a.m.), you are required to pick up your child in his/her classroom. No children in the 1st block of class will be allowed to leave the classroom without a parent.

Please be prompt in picking up your child. You have to park the car and walk to pick her/him up so you don’t block the parked cars or the church entrance. Any unattended vehicles blocking either one may be towed at owner's expense. In case of an emergency, this would mean a monetary fine to you from the City of North Lauderdale.

Late Pick-up Policy All parents and/or guardians are expected to pick up their children on time. If you are unable to do so, it is your responsibility to notify the Parish Office that you will be late or are sending an alternate person to pick up your child. Please advise the individual picking up your child to bring photo identification with them.

If you are late, your child will be in the Parish Office. After 10 minutes the parents or the emergency contact person will be called. If this becomes a habit, there may be a $5.00 fee for every 5 minutes late. This fee is due 8 upon picking up your child. Please be aware that if this continues it may result in your child being dismissed from the program.

A staff member will attempt to contact the parent, guardian or emergency contact person by telephone. If a child remains at the church 30 minutes after dismissal time, the local police department may be contacted and the child will be released into the custody of the appropriate law enforcement .

Emergency Procedures If a child is seriously injured or in need of medical attention, a staff/volunteer person will call 9-1-1 and the child will be taken to the nearest hospital. Parent will be notified immediately. Staff/volunteer will not personally transport children.
