Navigational Compasses Everyone knows a few fundamentals of navigation- north is always up, the sun rises in the east, and compasses usually point towards magnetic north. But at some point in time, you'll want to be able to find out where you are, and where you need to go. Most maps are drawn with north located at the top. Road maps are drawn to scale and the scale shows you a ratio of map distance to real distance. In Adelaide generally the hills are to the east and the sea is to the west.

Quick Task Complete the table by making a sentence by filling in the correct compass direction. (One has been done for you)

1. Norwood is EAST Of the city centre.

2. West Lakes is of Port Adelaide.

3. Eastwood is of the city centre.

4. Bowden is of North Adelaide.

5. Marion is of Glenelg

Having access to contacts is essential to have when driving a taxi. Your customer may know where they want to go, but not know where it is or how to get there. You will need to look the place up on your satellite navigational device or in some instances you may need to access the internet. When searching, no matter which tool you are using, you may have to have some knowledge of the location of the place to aid in finding specific directions. e.g. Caravan Parks, Churches, Theatres etc. When searching for a business sometimes if it’s called ‘The’ something……..you will not find it by looking under the letter ‘T’. The word ‘The’ is dropped and the name of the place is listed as the place only. In some instances, the establishment may have a formal name, yet locals call it something else. E.g. The Maid Hotel The more familiar you are with how to communicate with your passenger and how to look up addresses, the quicker and more efficient you will become. So, even though your vehicle is fitted with a satellite navigational system, you will still need to tell the system where it needs to direct you.

Practice using your navigational device and street directory as you follow through this booklet and look up the answers to the tasks allocated.

City “No Right Hand Turns’ King William Street is the major arterial road that runs through the centre of the Adelaide CBD. Due to the tramline installation, vehicles now have many intersections that cannot be crossed by conducting a right hand turn. One exception is northbound King William St traffic, which will still be able to turn right into Flinders St, because traffic will not queue across the tramline. Motorists are able to turn right through Victoria Square into Wakefield and Grote streets. These traffic conditions may add to delaying your passenger’s journey however this imposes improved safety of these locations.

When travelling along King William Street between North Terrace and Victoria Square, list the roads where it is illegal to make a right hand turn. (North Terrace has been filled in for you)

CONGRATULATIONS!

You've run the course and finished this part of the learning program. There is no secret to your success; it is the result of preparation, hard work and the learning you have completed. Well done! A lot of people would like to move mountains, but few of them are willing to practice on small hills. Congratulations on completing this first stage of your future career! A key to success is: study while others sleep, work while others loaf, prepare while others play and dream while others just wish. The future holds great opportunities for you in your career as a professional Taxi Driver. Success is connected with action and you have just taken the first steps to the start of a new chapter in your life. Congratulations on all that you have accomplished!
