July 18, 2011 an Open Letter to the Congressional Republicans: Cut July 18, 2011 An Open Letter to the Congressional Republicans: Cut, Run, and Hide Plan is Unacceptable! Dear Republican Member of Congress: On behalf of the millions of Americans represented by the undersigned groups, we write in strong opposition to Senator Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) "contingency plan" to raise the debt ceiling and pledge the use of every tool at our coalition's disposal to see to its defeat. Our organizations have united in support of the "Cut, Cap, and Balance" plan to save our budget and our economy, but the McConnell-Reid-Pelosi proposal is best described as "Cut, Run, and Hide." In one fell swoop, it abdicates Congressional responsibility by granting the President the unilateral authority to raise the debt ceiling and undermines our ability to secure real policy changes that will alter our unsustainable fiscal path. The wave election of 2010, to which many of you owe your jobs, signaled a massive rebuke of unbridled federal spending and trillion-dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. Our nation stands at a crossroads and your constituents did not elect you to stay on our current course and hit cruise control. The debt ceiling debate has provided us with an unprecedented opportunity to steer America in a direction of fiscal restraint and sustainability. We will not sit idly by while that opportunity is frittered away with a plan to avoid hard policy choices in favor of election-year campaign fodder. That is why we, the undersigned, pledge as follows: 1. We will refrain from backing any Member of Congress or candidate for federal office, or a leadership position in a Republican Caucus, who supports the McConnell- Reid-Pelosi "Cut, Run, and Hide" plan, to the extent that our various legal structures and rules allow. 2. Those of us with Congressional scorecards commit to designating any vote on the McConnell-Reid-Pelosi "Cut, Run, and Hide" plan as a "key vote" that will carry the heaviest weight possible. 3. We will use every tool at our disposal to rally organizations and activists across the country in vigorous opposition the McConnell-Reid-Pelosi "Cut, Run, and Hide" plan, to the extent that our various legal structures and rules allow. The "Cut, Cap, and Balance" plan to cut our deficit, cap spending, and pass a strong Balanced Budget Amendment is a proposal to create a sustainable fiscal future for generations to come. The McConnell-Reid-Pelosi "Cut, Run, and Hide" plan, on the other hand, is another Washington gimmick to avoid responsibility, kick the can down the road, and hope voters don't notice. We will do everything in our power to ensure that they do. Table of Contents Executive Summary 3 Introduction 7 Boundaries and Tensions Within the Online Conservative News Field 15 Training, Standards, and Practices 41 Columbia Journalism School Conservative Newswork 3 Executive Summary Through much of the 20th century, the U.S. news diet was dominated by journalism outlets that professed to operate according to principles of objectivity and nonpartisan balance. Today, news outlets that openly proclaim a political perspective — conservative, progressive, centrist, or otherwise — are more central to American life than at any time since the first journalism schools opened their doors. Conservative audiences, in particular, express far less trust in mainstream news media than do their liberal counterparts. These divides have contributed to concerns of a “post-truth” age and fanned fears that members of opposing parties no longer agree on basic facts, let alone how to report and interpret the news of the day in a credible fashion. Renewed popularity and commercial viability of openly partisan media in the United States can be traced back to the rise of conservative talk radio in the late 1980s, but the expansion of partisan news outlets has accelerated most rapidly online. This expansion has coincided with debates within many digital newsrooms. Should the ideals journalists adopted in the 20th century be preserved in a digital news landscape? Or must today’s news workers forge new relationships with their publics and find alternatives to traditional notions of journalistic objectivity, fairness, and balance? Despite the centrality of these questions to digital newsrooms, little research on “innovation in journalism” or the “future of news” has explicitly addressed how digital journalists and editors in partisan news organizations are rethinking norms.

Understanding Evangelical Support for, and Opposition to Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential Election by Joseph Thomas Zichterman A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Political Science Thesis Committee: Richard Clucas, Chair Jack Miller Kim Williams Portland State University 2020 Abstract This thesis addressed the conundrum that 81 percent of evangelicals supported Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, despite the fact that his character and comportment commonly did not exemplify the values and ideals that they professed. This was particularly perplexing to many outside (and within) evangelical circles, because as leaders of America’s “Moral Majority” for almost four decades, prior to Trump’s campaign, evangelicals had insisted that only candidates who set a high standard for personal integrity and civic decency, were qualified to serve as president.

Bush administration’s foreign policy are becoming. “Acquiring additional burdens by engag- ing in new wars of liberation is the last thing the United States needs,” declared one Bush critic in Foreign Affairs. “The principal problem is the mistaken belief that democracy is a talisman for all the world’s ills, and that the United States has a responsibility to promote dem- ocratic government wherever in the world it is lacking.”1 Does this sound like a Democratic pundit bashing Bush for par- tisan gain? Quite the contrary. The swipe came from Dimitri Simes, president of the Nixon Center and copublisher of National Interest. Simes is not alone in calling on the administration to reclaim the party’s pre-Reagan heritage—to abandon the moralistic, Wilsonian, neoconservative dream of exporting democracy and return to a more limited and realistic foreign policy that avoids the pitfalls of Iraq. 1. Both believe a neoconservative cabal has hijacked the administration’s foreign policy and has now overplayed its hand.

January 13, 2014 Salem Communications' Acquisition of Eagle Publishing Creates Conservative Multi-Media Powerhouse Salem Acquires Several Influential Conservative Brands, Including Regnery Publishing, Human Events and RedState.com CAMARILLO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 01/13/14 -- Salem Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: SALM) today announced the acquisition of the assets of Eagle Publishing, including Regnery Publishing, HumanEvents.com, and Redstate.com, as well as sister companies Eagle Financial Publications and Eagle Wellness. Adding Eagle's business units to Salem's already considerable portfolio of multi-media assets creates a conservative media powerhouse. The two companies represent many of conservatism's finest voices in talk radio, book publishing and digital media. Salem's syndicated programming, individual radio stations, and popular websites reach millions of listeners and readers across the country, while Regnery Publishing, RedState.com, and Human Events provide compelling ideas and opinion to millions of conservatives online and in print. The acquisition of these highly regarded conservative media properties will allow Salem to strengthen and deepen their already extensive presence in the conservative market. Edward G. Atsinger III, president and chief executive officer of Salem, said: "Eagle is one of the most influential companies in the conservative media space. Its addition to Salem brings together a unique portfolio of conservative media properties and fits with our strategy of integrating traditional media and new media assets all serving the same target audience. The opportunity we like most about this acquisition is that each of Eagle's businesses matches up so well with Salem's extensive media platform. With 102 radio stations and a dozen major national websites all targeting the conservative community, this provides a perfect marketing platform to promote Eagle's products to a wider audience." "It is hard to believe more than 20 years have passed since I started Eagle Publishing," noted Tom Phillips, owner and chairman of Eagle Publishing.

  • At Least 75 Conservative Organizations—Several of Which
At Least 75 Conservative Organizations—Several Of Which Have Opposed Pandemic Aid And Government Spending For Others—Took Nearly $20 Million In Funds Meant For Small Businesses. DOUBLE-DIPPING: At Least 14 Of These Organizations Also Took Money Under The Enhanced Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program. SUMMARY: An Accountable.US analysis of new data from Trump’s Small Business Administration shows at least 75 conservative organizations—including several that have vocally advocated against pandemic aid— took nearly $20 million in pandemic aid meant for struggling small businesses. Most egregiously, at least 14 of these 75 conservative organizations also took money under a second government aid fund, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program. Of the 75 organizations Accountable.US identified, roughly half took PPP funds valued at less than $150,000, meaning their identities were only recently revealed following a lawsuit. Among these organizations are: • Center for Urban Renewal and Education, Council for National Policy, and Leadership Institute Inc, each “double-dipped” – receiving both PPP and EIDL assistance - and were part of a group of eight conservative organizations that took aid totaling $2,281,075 despite signing a May 2020 letter led by the Conservative Action Project in opposition to federal aid to state and local governments amid the COVID-19 crisis. • American Majority and its action arm took $130,400 combined despite organizing the “largest single-day conservative grassroots training initiative in history” in September 2011. American Majority hosted training sessions across the country to “educate and mobilize fiscally conservative activists and future candidates to fight for limited government and free market principles.” • The Remembrance Project took $75,000 under EIDL and $15,600 under PPP.
