2 SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL PARISH | GREENFIELD, HAZELWOOD, OAKLAND PARISH STAFF REFLECTIONS Sister Mariella Bradley Office Staff [email protected] SCRIPTURE REFLECTION Larry Clapper This is the theme of Advent and we can deepen our awareness of God’s Director of Facilities and Maintenance love for us by living this awareness of God throughout Advent this year. [email protected] “Watch.” We want God to find us always doing what is right, always Ken Danchik mindful of Him in our ways. We can only do that if we take time to be Associate Organist with Him each day. The Prophet Isaiah reminds us in the first reading [email protected] that there is no God like our God. Sometimes we think that there are Beverly Farinelli no competing gods today. Instead, we can open our eyes and see so Wedding Coordinator many realities competing to be god, so many people who play at being [email protected] god, and so many values that seem godlike to the present age. Don Fellows Director of Music and Organist It is important that we realize that only faithfulness to the One, True [email protected] God will bring us peace and a wonderful human life. Faith never Erica Gamerro promises to make us wealthy or powerful—it actually promises the Part-time Pastoral Associate opposite. What faith does promise is that our life will be filled with joy [email protected] in knowing the Lord and living His divine life. The second reading on Eileen Lancos this First Sunday of Advent is from the First Letter to the Corinthians. In Sacristan this letter we can focus on these words: “God is faithful, and by him you Jean Malek were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” God is Parish Secretary faithful. We are not faithful, but God remains faithful. God calls us to [email protected] fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ. We are called to share the life of Christina McCann Jesus Christ. Again, we can reflect that living the life of Jesus Christ Wedding Coordinator means to embrace poverty, to accept suffering, to serve all others and [email protected] especially those who reject us. Sharing in this life brings incredible joy, Mike Pittek even when it does not bring immediate happiness—which is what our Office Manager world wants us to seek. [email protected]

The Gospel from Saint Mark reminds us once again: keep alert and Terri Taormina Director of Religious Education keep watching for the Lord! It is so easy today to accept the values of [email protected] the world. At times, those values seem even more compassionate than Ted Wojcik Gospel values. We have to recognize that doing right is not the same as Sacristan feeling good about ourselves or about others. One of the great gods of our time is the demand that we always feel good, that we seek Greg Zigray Business Manager momentary happiness, above the values of the Gospel and the [email protected] Scriptures.

May this Advent deepen our faith and help us understand and live what the Scriptures reveal to us. May we find ourselves drawn deeper into the heart of the Church founded by Jesus Christ. It is not easy to stand QUOTES OF THE WEEK against the false gods of our time, but we have received the invitation to walk with the Lord Jesus. Let us walk into His light. “Many, many people are not becoming Christians for one FROM THE HEART OF OUR PASTOR, FATHER STUBNA reason only: there is nobody to 1. forward, we believe that the Mass schedule outlined above is sufficient for our needs at this time. Both St. Rosalia and St. Paul Cathedral have adequate space for those coming to Mass and provide room for expansion.

Please note that we have resumed the 6:00 pm Saturday vigil Mass at Saint Paul Cathedral. We have added a Sunday Mass at Saint Rosalia at 9:00 am instead of 11:00 am. This will give our parish an earlier Sunday morning Mass in addition to the 6:30 am and, in fact, was the time of the Mass at Saint Stephen. This also allows us to move the 1:00 pm Mass in Spanish to 12:00 Noon which was the time of the original Mass in Spanish at Saint Regis. We are hoping that these changes will be welcomed by a number of people in our parish.

5. Transportation. We are working with a transportation company to provide some shuttle service to those who express a need for it. We would want to be able to have a pick up at Saint Stephen site and Saint Regis site for anyone who desires to attend the 4:00 pm Mass at Saint Rosalia site on Saturday night, the 9:00 am Mass at Saint Rosalia site or the 10:00 am Mass at Saint Paul Cathedral on Sundays.

In order to determine the viability of this service, we need those interested to sign up and indicate for which Mass they need transportation. This would be a weekly sign up so that we can make the arrangements. We are asking anyone who would like to use the shuttle service to notify the parish administrative office in advance at 412-621-4951 or email at [email protected]. We will need to know your intention to use the shuttle no later than 3:00 pm on the Thursday of the week you intend to use the shuttle. If you have signed up and find that your circumstances change such that you will not be using the shuttle that weekend, please call the parish office as soon as possible at 412-621-4951 to notify us of that change. Since there is a cost to the parish for utilizing the shuttle service, we do not want to operate the shuttle unless there are people who have signed up to use it.

I would continue to ask for your patience and understanding as we do all that we can to bring our parish together into one community of faith. Change is never easy for any of us. But let us never lose sight of the big picture and why we are here in the first place: to grow more deeply in our love for God, to strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ, to open our hearts each day to the amazing grace of God given to us in the Church and especially the sacraments, and to serve the needs of others, so that we can gain the only thing worth

gaining – life forever in heaven. Saint Paul pray for us.

ADVENT BEGINS TODAY. This is a season of special grace that calls the faithful to be alert and be prepared for the coming of Christ. Our minds focus immediately on the coming of the Lord at Christmas as we prepare to commemorate the birthday of our Savior and the mystery of the Incarnation. Advent calls us to be attentive and to be careful that we keep Christ in Christmas. All around us are the pulls of secularism, commercialism, and materialism. Our response must be one to remind the world of why we have this season – it is to remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ into the world, the mystery of God becoming one like us in all things but sin, so that the darkness of sin could be eradicated by God’s saving power and human redemption won through the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. Be careful not to water down Christmas. We must unapologetically and forcefully remind the world that Christmas is a Christian holiday – one in which we take great pride in celebrating – because it is the birthday of our beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the Lord of all Life.

I encourage everyone, especially our families, to make this season of Advent a time of holiness and grace. Prepare well to celebrate the birthday of Christ by growing in faith. Read the Scriptures; pray the rosary and reflect on the mysteries of Jesus Christ; light the advent candles at home on your table and pray that God’s light will slowly diminish the reality of sin in your own life and in the world; go to confession and receive the healing power of God’s grace to prepare your heart to receive Christ in the Eucharist; attend Mass at least one additional day each week in Advent and realize the fruits that come to those who come to Mass daily. Make this season a time of preparation so the Christ-child will find a worthy place in your heart and home to dwell more completely with his love.

6 SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL PARISH | GREENFIELD, HAZELWOOD, OAKLAND

THIS AFTERNOON, we will hold our monthly afternoon of Eucharist Exposition and Adoration, with Vespers and Benediction. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed after the 12:00 Noon Mass and Eucharistic Adoration will take place from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. We will close with Sung Vespers and Benediction at 5:00 pm which is always a beautiful and inspiring prayer. Please consider taking time to spend in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, one of the great riches and blessings we have as Catholics. Jesus in the Real Presence will touch your heart with his healing and saving love if you make time to devote to adoration. The Cathedral hosts this monthly afternoon of Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction on the last Sunday of each month from 1:00 until 5:30 pm. Please consider joining us.

MANY THANKS TO DIANA GLADSTONE who helped this year to decorate the altar for Thanksgiving at Saint Paul Cathedral and for her help with the Advent wreath at the Cathedral. MANY THANKS TO JEAN MALEK and MADISON MOCK for their help in decorating Saint Rosalia for Thanksgiving. It makes our liturgy much more beautiful and we appreciate their wonderful work!

OUR ADVENT WREATH in the sanctuary will remind us of the four weeks of preparation and the call for each of us to become the light of Jesus Christ and to shine more brightly with his Truth and Love in the darkness of the world.

IMPORTANCE OF PRAYER. Pope Francis recently reflected on how Jesus always took time out to pray and be in dialogue with God, despite busy days helping the poor and the sick. Jesus was not guided or inspired by success, consensus or “the seductive phrase, ‘Everyone is searching for you,’” the pope said. “Prayer is the rudder that guides Jesus’ course,” he said; it does not lead him to the easiest path, but to the one that stays true to God’s will, which he discovers in prayer. A day lived without prayer risks turning into a day that is lived as “bothersome or tedious,” a day when whatever happens is poorly endured and comes from “blind fate,” the pope said. “Prayer is first of all listening to and encountering God,” he said. It helps people face reality, but in a way that they can see problems not as obstacles, but as opportunities to grow in faith and charity. Without cultivating self-reflection, he said, “we become superficial, agitated and anxious.” Jesus showed that prayer is ultimately letting go and putting oneself in God’s hands.

NOTE OF GRATITUDE. We received this note and generous donation from the parents of a college student who has attended Mass at Saint Paul Cathedral on Sunday nights for the past four years. They live in Lancaster, PA: Dear Father Stubna, our son has attended Mass on Sunday nights for the past four years. He has enjoyed the time and benefitted from receiving such great spiritual nourishment and support while away from home. As his parents, we recognize the faith support and encouragement you have given him during his time at the University of Pittsburgh. You may not have been aware of your impact on his life, but we are deeply grateful.” These are the notes that make everything we do worthwhile and meaningful. We can only imagine the impact that our parish is making on countless numbers of our college students who come to Mass at Saint Paul Cathedral in such large numbers. We are delighted to have them as part of our parish community during their time in college and are always happy to see them at Mass.

MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2021 are now being taken for 2021. Forms were published in the bulletin the last two Sundays. If you need one, please contact the parish office. We do not take Mass intention requests over the phone or any walk-in requests until all parishioner forms have been processed. The forms are processed in the order received. Please note the stipulations of the parish Mass policy: Only four (4) requests per registered household will be able to be scheduled, with only two (2) Sunday masses per household. There are no exceptions to this policy. We need to be fair and just to all our parishioners. If there are special wedding anniversary requests for 2021, please get these to Father Stubna as soon as possible. The Mass intention forms are now being accepted at the parish office and will be recorded in the order they are received. Please note that some special parish and diocesan Mass times have already been reserved. No individual Mass requests will be taken until Monday, December 28. Up until that time you will need to submit all requests with the Mass intention form. Any Mass intentions over the limit will be sent out to other priests to be satisfied privately.

WINE, CHEESE AND THE GOSPEL – FALL 2020. Father Stubna is hosting the Fall 2020 edition of Wine, Cheese and the Gospel online as we did in the Spring. This program can be accessed through the Cathedral Facebook page as well as Comcast channel 95. This online edition will take place from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. Our third and final session of the Fall series is:

Monday, November 30: Why Do We Have Saints and Some Saints for Our Times

Please consider joining us for this series that helps all of us to learn more about our Catholic beliefs and how we can live them out with fidelity and courage.

KATHEDRAL KONFECTIONS is a fundraising project organized by a group of volunteers at the Saint Paul Cathedral parish. Once again, this year, we have made DELICIOUS HOMEMADE HOLIDAY PEANUT BRITTLE that is being sold in time for Christmas. All proceeds will be used in support of our Building a Future of Hope Campaign, particularly our project to renovate the Synod Hall building. It is our hope that the Synod Hall building can become our pastoral center, upgraded with accessibility including an elevator, heating and air conditioning, and office and meeting space for the parish center. You can purchase peanut brittle at the rectory during the week and after many of the weekend Masses. It is $10.00 per bag. It makes wonderful Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers! Please consider ordering some peanut brittle for the Christmas holidays and at the same time help to support the needs of our Building a Future of Hope Campaign and the plan to renovate Synod Hall. We hope we can count of your support.

OUR PEANUT BRITTLE MAKERS wear masks, gloves, protective gowns, and head gear. Everything used in the peanut brittle is done following strict sanitizing guidelines. Volunteers are screened with temperatures taken regularly. We have a high standard of quality control in the process of making our peanut brittle which is maintained at all times.

SAINT OF THE WEEK. December 4 marks the feast of the great doctor of the Church, SAINT JOHN DAMASCENE. John was a chief financial officer for the leaders of Damascus when he felt called to religious life and became a monk at the monastery of Saint Sabas, near Jerusalem. He battled the Iconoclastic heresy which denounced the veneration of images and wanted to cleanse the Churches of statues, icons, crucifixes, and images of any kind. His great defense of Catholic doctrine helped to defend the Church against this heresy. As he wrote, “When we see the crucifix, we remember Christ’s saving passion. We fall down to worship not the piece of wood, but the One who is imaged, Christ crucified.” He was a leading theologian and writer including the great work “On the Orthodox Faith,” which presented a summary of the teachings of all the Greek Fathers. Saint John wrote many hymns of praise as well and was devoted to the Blessed Mother. He was a man of great and immense intellect, skilled in many areas of life, and yet choose to use them all in service to God and the Church.

CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS CARDS. As a fundraising project to help raise additional funds for the renovation of Synod Hall, we are selling boxes of Christmas cards this year. There are 12 cards in a box, three each of four different beautiful scenes with our Christmas decorations. The cost is $20 per box. They are available in the rectory and we will be selling after the Masses on several Sundays. Please consider using the Cathedral Christmas cards this year and helping us to raise some additional funds for our Synod Hall renovation project!

BOOK REVIEWS. We invite members of our parish to submit a book recommendation with a short review to benefit our parishioners. We are looking for Catholic books on prayer, theology, pastoral life, even Catholic fiction. Father Stubna reserves the right to reject any book that is contrary to orthodox Catholic teaching or belief. We have had 15 book reviews published so far but are in need of other members of the parish community to share a favorite book in order to continue our series.

HEARING LOOP PROJECT. Many thanks to the Janis Kearns for making a generous donation to our hearing loop project in memory of her mother, SOPHIE KEARNS. We are deeply grateful for her generous support and will remember Sophie in our prayers in a most special way.

MINISTERS OF HOSPITALITY/GREETERS ARE NEEDED. Are you a happy, cheerful person? Do you enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new people? If you do, we have the perfect job for you! We are looking for volunteers to welcome parishioners and visitors alike as they arrive for weekend Mass in our beautiful Cathedral. We seek volunteers who truly enjoy talking to people – answering questions, providing information about Cathedral activities, and encouraging participation in the parish. In his Rule, Saint Benedict states that “all guests who present themselves [at the door of the monastery] are to be welcomed as Christ.” Imagine how that kind of welcome could transform our faith community! If this ministry appeals to you, please contact our coordination Mary Kay Tappe at [email protected] or contact the parish office.

GIVING TREE 2020. In this season of Advent, we are reminded about the Giving Tree Project for our newly merged St. Paul Cathedral Parish. It goes without saying that due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s project will be handled differently. Nevertheless, your generosity is more important than ever during these difficult times. Because of social distancing guidelines, there will not be a physical tree with ornaments at either the St. Paul Cathedral or St. Rosalia sites. If you would like to participate or have any questions, please contact Kathleen Garvey via email at [email protected] or leave a message at 412-781-2132. All gift cards are due the weekend of December 12-13. Envelopes with gift cards, marked with one of the organizations (Angel’s Place, St. Joseph’s House, or Providence Connection), can be placed in the collection basket/bin in the church or sent to the parish administrative office to the attention of Mike Pittek/Kathleen Garvey (See the November 22 bulletin for complete details). CHRISTMAS FLOWER DONATIONS will help us to provide the beautiful flowers that will be in the sanctuary of the two Churches being used for regular Sunday worship: Saint Paul Cathedral and Saint Rosalia. You can make donations in memory of your loved ones and friends who will be remembered in a very special way during the Masses on Christmas day and throughout the Christmas season. Please use the envelope provided with your offertory envelope or mark your intentions on a piece of paper with your donation in any envelope and drop them in the collection basket or drop them off at the rectory. We ask that you write the names legibly so that we can properly list them in the bulletin. The names of those remembered will be published in the bulletin on December 20 but they must be in by December 10. Any that come in after that will be published in the December 27 bulletin. Please get your donations in as soon as possible. Your help in making our Church look beautiful for Christmas is a great blessing for which I am deeply grateful.

WHAT IS FLOCKNOTE? Flocknote is an easy and efficient way for St. Paul Cathedral Parish to communicate with parishioners and parish groups through email and text messages. It allows us to reach our members at a moment's notice, resulting in higher attendance at Mass and parish events, increased stewardship, and a more connected parish community. But Flocknote can only be effective if you sign up! There are two ways to join Flocknote:

1. Visit our unique URL: https://StPaulCathedralParishPGH.flocknote.com/everyone

2. Text to join by texting the word CATHEDRALPGH to 84576

PART TIME WEDDING COORDINATORS NEEDED FOR SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL. We are seeking one or two people who might be interested in serving as part time wedding coordinators for Saint Paul Cathedral. This would involve one or two weekends a month. OPLATKY [Oplatki, Oplatek] is a Christmas wafer tradition with roots in Poland and other Eastern European countries. The wafers are baked from flour and water, and are usually rectangular or round in shape, and very thin, with a taste very similar to the altar bread that becomes the Eucharist during Mass. The wafers are embossed with Christmas related religious images, such as a nativity scene.

Gathered around the table for the Christmas Eve meal, the oldest member of the family breaks off a small piece of the oplatky to begin the ritual. The remaining wafer is passed to another member while a prayer for loved ones is said as a sign of family unity. While doing so each member of the family is kissed and is wished a joyful feast. The other family members then greet one another in the same way. This continues until everyone at the table has a piece of the wafer. Finally, the family members quietly consume their piece of wafer. Some dip their wafer in honey or garlic before consuming. Then the traditional Christmas Eve meal continues.

Oplatky is available to purchase for $1 for a pack of 5 wafers in the Saint Paul Cathedral office during regular office hours and at Saint Rosalia Church before and after the weekend Mass throughout Advent.

PRO-LIFE CORNER

AS WE CELEBRATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II'S ENCYCLICAL EVANGELIUM VITAE, “THE GOSPEL OF LIFE,” we want to share a quote from that document each week in our Pro-Life Corner. Thanks to Birthright of Pittsburgh for helping to coordinate this effort. From the “Gospel of Life” #61: “Human life is sacred and inviolable at every moment of existence, including the initial phase which precedes birth. All human beings, from their mothers’ womb, belong to God who searches them and knows them, who forms them and knits them together with his own hands, who gazes on them when they are tiny shapeless embryos and already sees in them the adults of tomorrow whose days are numbered and whose vocation is even now written in the ‘Book of Life’ (cf. Ps 139: 1, 13-16).” ~ Pope Saint John Paul II
