Crosse. La lacune paléontologique qui semblait séparer les Pleurotomaires fossiles de leurs congénères de l'époque de notre actuelle, tend à s'atténuer de plus en plus. Lors dernier travail sur les espèces de ce genre, c'est-à-dire vingtaine d'finnées (l), on ne con- il y a environ une qu'un petit naissait guère, dans les terrains tertiaires, quant aux formes miocènes, nombre d'espèces éocènes ; manquer pliocènes et quaternaires, elles paraissaient complètement. P. tertia- Sismondai, Goldfiiss, de Bunde ; (3) Pleuiolomaria ri;i, Mac Coy, d'\Mstralie. — 6 — nant aux tufs madréporiques quaternaires de la Guade- loupe Il ne reste (1 ). donc que les couches pliocènes, dans lesquelles on n'ait encore recueilli aucun représentant du genre, mais nous sommes convaincu que cette dernière lacune doit être attribuée uniquement à l'imperfection de nos connaissances paléontologiques et que les découvertes de l'avenir ne larderont pas à la combler. Quant aux Pleurotomaires ncluellement vivants, le nombre des espèces a doublé, depuis 1861. Le Pleuroto- maria Beyrichi, Hilgendorf, du Japon, et le P. Rumphii, Schepman, des Moluques, sont venus s'ajouter au P. Quoyana, Fischer et Bernard!, et au P. Adanson iana, Crosse et Fischer, des Petites Antilles. Pour cette dernière es- pèce, dont l'habitat était précédemment inconnu, les dra- gages etiectués récemment par les expéditions scienlifi- ques américaines et les recherches des naturalistes zélés de la Guadeloupe nous ont appris que, conformément à nos prévisions (2), elle habit,^)it les mers des Antilles. On connaît, jusqu'à présent, peu de chose de l'organi- sation de l'animal des Pleurotomaires. Les naturalistes de l'Expédition du « Blake x», accomplie de 1877à 1879 dans la merdes Antilies et le golfe du Mexique, sont les seuls qui aient recueilli vivantes les deux espèces américaines, ' et encore les exemplaires connus sont-ils, aeluellement en assez mauvais état de conservation, si nous nous en rapportons à ce que dit, à ce sujet, notre honorable con- frère du Smilhsonian Institution, f.î. Dali admet la famille des Pleurotomariidœel la considère comme devant être placée dans le voisinage immédiat de celle des Trochidse, tout en possédant quel- ques caractères qui la relient à celle des Haliolidse. Nous reproduisons, d'après l'auteur américain, les caractères attribués par lui à cette famille. Famille des PLEUROTOMARIID^E. Coquille trochiforme, nacrée à l'intérieur, présentant, à son dernier tour de spire, une entaille ou fissure desti- née à laisser échapper les œufs ou les matières fécales. Opercule corné, subspiral ou multispiral. Branchies au nombre de deux, presque symétriques, placées de chaque côté de la fente du manteau qui corres- pond à la portion entaillée ou perforée de la coquille. Animal muni d'un manteau à bord papilleux et à fran- ges latérales;, mais dépourvu des filaments allongés qui caractérisent les Trochidae. Pas de voile frontal ni de fente du pied. Mufle smiple et dépourvu de trompe. Yeux « mal, d'après nature, est, en préparation. Rep. on the MoUusca, p. 79, 1881.1 » placés sur des pédoncules extérieurs, à la base des tenta- cules, qui sont simples. Mâchoires petites et faibles. Armature linguale. Dent rachidienne petite, lancéolée ou plutôt disposée en forme de large baïonnette. Dents la- térales assez simples, nombreuses, semblables eiitre elles, diminuant de taille dans le sens du côté externe, et sui- vies d'un grand nombre ô'imcini longs et minces, dont beaucoup sont denticulés, près de leur pointe, et munis, en même temps, d'une petite houppe de fibres attachée au côté de chaque uncinus, en arrière des denticulalions (1). Les espèces actuellement connues à Tétai vivant peu- vent se diviser en deux groupes. Le premier est caracté- risé par la position supramédiane de l'entaille et de la bande du sinus qui la continue, l'entaille étant placée en- tre la partie médiane du dernier tour et la suture. Le se- cond, au contraire, se distingue par la position infra- médiane de son entaille, qui se trouve placée entre la partie médiane et la partie basale du dernier tour. Par une coïncidence à laquelle nous n'attachons pas au- tant d'importance qu'au caractère tiré de la position de l'entaille et de la bande du sinus, il se trouve que les 2 espèces du premier groupe (P. Rumphii et P. Adanso- niana) sont ombiliquées, tandis que les deux espaces du se- cond (P'. Quoyana et P. Beyrichi) sont imperforées. Sectio I. Species sinu supramediano munilœ, utnbilicatœ. 1. On a collection of buccinacean and mitracean Gastropods (Mollusca, Neogastropoda) from the Mozambique Channel and New Caledonia by W. 0. CERNOHORSKY Abstract. — The present paper deals with a collection of 59 species of buccinacean and mitra- cean gastropods belonging to 4 families from moderately shallow to deep water around the Mozam- bique Channel area, north of Madagascar. A total of 27 % of the species recovered are new geogra- phical range extensions. The New Caledonian material consists of 21 species belonging to 5 fami- lies, and was dredged, with one exception, in moderately deep water. A total of 38 % of the New Caledonian species represent new geographical records, and one of these is a new species : Voluto- mitra (Waimatea) vaubani n. sp. The new name Vexillum (Costellaria) duplex is proposed for the homonymous Mitra simphcissima Schepman, 1911, and its var. glabra Schepman, 1911. Résumé. — L'auteur étudie une collection de 59 espèces appartenant à 4 familles de Gasté- ropodes Buccinacea et Mitracea dragués dans le nord du canal du Mozambique, à des profondeurs diverses. L'étude montre une extension de l'aire de répartition connue pour 27 % des espèces. Le matériel néo-calédonien comprend 21 espèces appartenant à 5 familles et a été dragué, à une exception près, en eau relativement peu profonde. L'aire de répartition connue se trouve étendue pour 38 % des espèces, dont une est nouvelle : Volulomilra (Waimatea) vaubani n. sp. Le nom nouveau Vexillum (Costellaria) duplex est proposé en remplacement du nom Mitra simplicissima Schepman, 1911, et de sa variété glabra Schepman, 1911, tous deux préoccupés.

It has always been my conviction that the spasmodic and haphazard collecting so far undertaken has not exhausted the molluscan species to be found in the deeper waters of South- eastern Australia. Only two large single collections have been made; first by the vessel " Challenger " in 1874 at Station 162 off East Moncoeur Island in 38 fathoms. These collections were described in the " Challenger " reports by Rev. Boog. Watson (Gastropoda) and E. A. Smith (Pelecypoda). In the latter was included a description of a shell Thracia watsoni not since taken in Victoria though dredged by Mr. David Howlett off St. Francis Island, South Australia. In 1910 the F. I. S. " Endeavour " made a number of hauls both north and south of Gabo Island and off Cape Everard. The u results of this collecting can be found in the Endeavour " reports. T. Iredale, 1924, published the results of shore and dredging collections made by Roy Bell. Since this time continued haphazard collecting has been carried out mostly as a hobby by trawler fishermen either for their own interest or on behalf of interested friends. Although some of this material has reached the hands of competent workers, over the years the recording of new species has probably been delayed.

Zoosystema 34 (4): 745-781. http://dx.doi.org/10.5252/z2012n4a6 ABSTRACT The deep-water molluscs collected during the expedition MD55 off SE Brazil have been gradually studied in some previous papers. The present one is focused on samples belonging to caenogastropod taxa Xenophoridae Troschel, 1852, Cypraeoidea Rafinesque, 1815, mitriforms and Terebridae Mörch, 1852. Regarding the Xenophoridae, Onustus aquitanus n. sp. is a new species, collected off the littoral of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 430-637 m depth (continental slope). The main characters of the species include the small size (c. 20 mm), the proportionally wide shell, the white colour, the short peripheral flange, the oblique riblets weakly developed and a brown multispiral protoconch. This appears to be the smallest living species of the family, resembling in this aspect fossil species. In respect to the Cypraeoidea, the following results were obtained: family Cypraeidae Rafinesque, 1815: Erosaria acicularis (Gmelin, 1791) and Luria cinerea (Gmelin, 1791) had the deepest record, respectively 607-620 m and 295-940 m, although the samples were all dead, eroded shells. Family Lamellariidae d’Orbigny, 1841: a total of three lots were collected, provisionally identified as Lamellaria spp.

In an initiative to help further our understanding, invertebrate surveys over the past seven years have now revealed more than 500 species, many of which are endemic. This is an essential reference guide to these species. Illustrated with hundreds of representative photographs, it includes brief narratives on the biology and ecology of the major taxonomic groups and characteristic features of common species. It is primarily aimed at scientifi c observers, and is intended to be used as both a training tool prior to deployment at-sea, and for use in making accurate identifi cations of invertebrate by catch when operating in the HIMI region. Many of the featured organisms are also found throughout the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, the guide therefore having national appeal.
