An Invitation to Enter

I am delighted to be able to invite you to enter the 2018 Round the Island Race which takes place on Saturday 7th July. The date is unusually late, but when the Isle of Wight Festival changed their date to the one reserved for our Race, it was the best choice for tidal options to make sure that as many of you as possible could finish the Race, even in light airs.

The very welcome support from Cloudy Bay as a presenting partner for the Race continues in 2018, and we’re pleased that Raymarine, MS Amlin and Helly Hansen have already signed up as Race Partners. Our efforts to secure a full title sponsor continue and we hope to make an announcement regarding additional Race Partners early in 2018.

I would like to thank all of you that completed our recent competitor survey, which provided some valuable insight into your views of the Race and what you would like to see in the future. One of the initiatives that we have decided to cautiously adopt this year is the move from a single entry fee to one that is based on the length of boat. In doing so, we have been able to hold the entry fee for the smallest boats at the same price as last year and have created five differential length bands so that the increment increase between bands is as gentle as possible.

Tankards will again be available to order and we were delighted that so many of you purchased them as a “thank you” to your crew. Details of how to order are on the entry form and race website.

Please remember that it is mandatory to have two separate mobile phones on board. One, which is the registered race mobile, must be used for your finishing declaration. The Race Committee will also use it for any important Race related announcements during the day and you will also be contacted on it if you are needed to attend a protest hearing. The second one, which is for safety reasons, must be capable of downloading and running the Round the Island Race tracking app.

Please also remember that you must give us full crew details together with contact details for any persons on board who are not under 18 or close family members. This does not change the mandatory requirement for a shore contact person but is information helpful to authorities such as the Coastguard in an emergency situation. You may enter without giving these details but they must be completed before you will be allowed to race.

Throughout the year during the run up to the Race, in addition to the usual press releases, we will be sending out emails which may include important safety news for entrants and we urge you to make sure these don’t end up in your spam folders.

If you are a newcomer to the Race you will find a lot of helpful advice on our website in the Competitor area and if you have any queries the Club Office Staff on telephone number 01983 296621 will be glad to help you.

I wish you all a great sailing season and look forward to welcoming friends, old and new, to Cowes and particularly the Island Sailing Club over the Race weekend.
