It marked the 60th An- niversary of our founding, an event recognised in different ways in all 15 of our contributing countries. Our rich harvest of graduates – Heads of States, Prime Ministers, Ministers of government, professionals, business and civil leaders – came out in proud numbers to attend banquets, galas, cultural performances, church services of thanksgiving, numerous symposia and lectures on all of our four campuses. Commemorative stamps were issued in 12 countries. A publication entitled 60 Under 60 recognising the broad and exceptional work of some of our current younger academics was widely distributed and very well received. On July 1, the Regional Endowment Fund was launched which will be expected to grow in perpetuity with donations from alumni and friends. The proceeds of the Fund will be used only for scholarships, academic chairs and upgrading facilities. The fund approximated US$4 million at the end of the year and we hope our alumni and friends will strive to achieve a target of US$20 million by 2014 (a small sum by comparison with large US Universities but to quote the Chinese saying, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step”). The year 2008 also marked the launch of our fourth, Open Campus, and Mona’s “Western Campus”. The Open Campus is an amalgamation of the School of Continuing Studies, the UWI Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC) and the Tertiary Level Institutions Unit. This entity will reach beyond the walls of the three traditional campuses utilising on-line and face-to-face modalities to teach students of all ages across the education spectrum – pre- university, undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate and professional upgrade programmes. Many explanations have been proposed to explain this tendency. This study critically examines these theories through historical and musicological analyses and concludes that the prevalence of the downbeat is a mixture of Jamaican folk and African-American popular music influences in its earliest incarnation, but was later deliberately emphasized in an attempt to create a unique new musical style.

    Jamaica’s National Dance Theatre Company – A Postcolonial Reading of the Repertoire Dancing Cultural Roots: Kinaesthetic Memory and the Discovery of Self All we can ask for is that the dancer will transmit to an audience which de- serves it, an aesthetically satisfying and emotionally exciting structural rela- tionship between the elements of space, dynamics and rhythm. For those of us who want the movement patterns of Jamaica and Jamaicans to be faithfully reflected in this artform we will expect the dancer to make his art move to the pulse of Jamaica. That’s as far as we need to go in nationalistic terms (Nettle- ford 1968: 131). As the previous survey on Jamaica’s African Creole religious and rec- reational practices has shown, kinaesthetic memory of these practices is essential for an understanding of the emerging Caribbean dance theatre of the 1930s and 40s. In his essay on the cultural links between Africa and the Caribbean, Harry Hoetink has furthermore described, how the African body in the context of colonization was at the same time per- ceived as a “vehicle of transportation, and as an aesthetic object” (Hoet- ink 1979: 30). Bodily practice functioned as a collective cultural marker within a minimum size unit, as, for example, in the relation of mother and child. Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.
