The whole ethos of mindfulness is to encourage people to live in the moment. The theory How to get goes that we are so busy trying to block out past worries and anticipate future ones that we rarely concentrate on enjoying more from what we are doing at the precise moment we are doing it. Because my mind is almost always full of chatter, I feel nothing when I eat, except something between my teeth. The programme aims to change this. The idea is to listen to the app before you cook and adapt your behaviour accordingly by approaching food in a focused way, thinking about the ingredients, where they come from, how they smell, then examining how they taste, how they move on your tongue. It sounds overly holistic but in practice, pretty sensible. The first few days are tough. Before meals, mindful eaters are asked to rate how hungry they are. I mentally note my level of “mind chatter” (distraction) and how I feel, out of 10. After I’ve eaten I ask myself the same questions. While this process of asking myself questions slows me down, it’s not until five days in that I start to actually concentrate on the entire process of eating. The next day, I cup my bag of almonds. I feel the weight. I think about how hungry I am and realising I’m not, don’t eat them. It sounds extraordinarily simple, and it is, but it works. What’s easy at home requires a little more effort when I went out for dinner with a friend one week in. Listening to my mind chatter, while trying to be good company is not easy. All this thought means that I don’t relax, but I do notice the lasagne and try to put more thought into eating it. SIMPLE test of a person’s abil- ity to detect odours and nonin- Odour test, eye exam might vasive eye exams might someday help doctors learn whether their patients are at risk of Alzheimer’s disease, according to research to detect early Alzheimer’s beA presented Sunday. With Alzheimer’s disease spreading fast among the world’s aging population, researchers are increasingly focused on the search for new ways to detect and treat the brain-killing disease in its earliest stages. In two separate studies on the connection between dementia and sense of smell, teams of researchers found that a decreased ability to detect odours in older people, as determined by a common scratch-and-sniff test, could point to brain cell loss and the onset of dementia. In two other studies, researchers showed that noninvasive eye exams also might offer a way to identify Alzheimer’s in its early stages. The findings — which are to be presented Sunday at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark — raise hopes that doctors could develop simple, inex- pensive diagnostic tools that would hunt down reliable biomarkers of a disease that affects more than 5 million people in the United States. Alzheimer’s is a progressive and incurable dis- ease that begins in areas of the brain associated with memory. It is the leading cause of dementia in older people, usually striking after the age of 65. It robs people of their cognitive abilities, speech and, ultimately, their identities. Eventually, it shuts down the most basic body functions, result- ing in death. The studies are just a few of those that will be discussed at the six-day Alzheimer’s Association conference, which has grown since the nonprofit first organized the event in 1988 in Las Vegas. The conference, which became annual in 2009, brings together thousands of researchers from more than 60 countries to discuss the latest developments in detecting and treating the disease. The four studies were united in their search for easily detectable biomarkers for Alzheimer’s. Scientists have long suspected a link between a person’s ability to detect odors and the slow cortexes were also thinner, which is associated with elderly people several times over a longer period of destruction of brain cells caused by Alzheimer’s poorer memory. time. HYPER SUDOKU How to play Kakuro: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.
