Project Scope Why Is This Work Necessary? How Will This Benefit Red Line Riders?
Red Line South Track Renewal project Cermak-Chinatown to 95th Street Spring/Summer 2013 CTA is planning to rebuild the South Red Line from just north of Cermak-Chinatown to 95th Street. The work will benefit Red Line riders for decades to come—through faster travel times, increased reliability, and spruced-up stations with a variety of improvements. As part of the project, in Spring/Summer 2013 the Red Line will be completely closed from Roosevelt Road to 95th Street for five months. CTA will offer several alternative travel options during this closure to minimize the impact on customers as much as possible (see other side of this page). Cermak- Faster travel times Better reliability Improved stations Chinatown Project scope CTA will replace all of the ties, rails, third rails, drainage system and ballast (the stone material that holds the ties in place) in the Red Line right of way. Additionally, all nine stations along the Dan Ryan Branch will be improved, from basic enhancements like new paint and better lighting Sox-35th to additional customer amenities, like new benches and bike racks. New elevators will be installed at the Garfield, 63rd and 87th Street stations—making the entire South Red Line fully accessible. 47th Garfield Why is this work necessary? The Dan Ryan Branch was built in 1969, when Richard Nixon was in the White House, a gallon 63rd of gas cost 35 cents and Gale Sayers won the NFL rush- ing title. The original tracks are well beyond their expected Dan Ryan terminal dedication 1969 lifespan, and call for a complete replacement. -

Meeting Display Boards for Public Meetings on the Ashland Avenue Ashland Avenue Bus Rapid Transit Project, held December 10 and 11, 2013. Logos: CTA in partnership with Chicago Department of Transportation and Chicago Department of Housing and Economic Development Welcome: Welcome to the public open house for the Ashland Avenue Bus Rapid Transit Environmental Assessment and project. • In April 2013, CTA and CDOT announced a vision for a center running Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system on Ashland Avenue between Irving Park Road and 95th Street to provide a fast and reliable north/ south transit connection for 16 miles through Chicago. The vision reflects the planning process and community engagement undertaken in 2012. • Over the summer, CTA and CDOT heard from various key stakeholders about this plan. We are now holding two public open house meetings as an extension of this outreach to gather additional input from the public. CTA and CDOT are still developing the Ashland BRT design, and we are considering options and modifications, including the implementation of additional left turns, based on continued feedback from the public. • The public open house meetings will summarize studies of the project impacts, including traffic analyses, that have been performed as part of the formal Environmental Assessment for the project, in accordance with federal government requirements. The Environmental Assessment is now complete and available on CTA’s website and in hard copy at several community locations. CTA and CDOT would like your comments on the Environmental Assessment, which can be made at the public open houses or by e-mail at [email protected]. -

2 YEARS OF PLANNINGO DESIGN BY TRANSIT Community 2018 Planning Program Implementation Report 2018 COMMUNITY PLANNING PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION REPORT WE ARE THE RTA The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is the unit of local government charged with financial oversight, funding, and regional transit planning for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, and Pace bus and Pace’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Paratransit Service. The RTA system serves two million riders each weekday with 145 CTA rail stations, 240 Metra commuter rail stations, 350 bus routes, with a combined 7,200 transit route miles throughout Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will Counties of northeastern Illinois. Multi-modal connections at Evanston’s Davis Street station The RTA reviews, adopts and monitors the annual budgets, two-year financial plans and five-year capital programs of CTA, Metra, Pace and ADA Paratransit to ensure they are balanced and consistent with long-range plans. The RTA’s Project Management Oversight program, oversees capital construction projects, ensuring they are on schedule and within budget. The RTA provides rider services, including travel-planning assistance, travel training, and also manages the eligibility program for individuals with disabilities and administers the Reduced Fare and Ride Free program for seniors and people with disabilities. The RTA performs periodic financial, operational performance and safety oversight audits of CTA, Metra, and Pace. The RTA also helps fund transit signal priority technology to keep buses operating more efficiently and provides interagency signage to assist riders in making transfer connections between buses and trains. In addition to these important activities, the RTA also offers two programs that add localized value throughout the region by providing funding and technical assistance to local governments. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 5, 2014 CONTACT: Mayor’s Press Office 312.744.3334 [email protected] Pete Scales, CDOT (312) 744-0707 [email protected] MAYOR EMANUEL ANNOUNCES CITY REACHES HALFWAY POINT OF 100-MILE GOAL FOR PROTECTED BIKE LANES BY 2015 Next 20 Miles Installed This Spring; 30 More Miles in Design Phase Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is halfway finished with the plan to install 100 miles of protected bike lanes by 2015, and is on track to achieve that milestone by early next year. “Improving our bicycling facilities is critical to creating the quality of life in Chicago that attracts businesses and families to the city,” Mayor Emanuel said. “We are making Chicago the most bike-friendly city in the United States.” Twenty more miles of protected bike lanes will be installed this spring and summer, with the remaining 30 miles in design phase and planned for installation later this year and early 2015. In 2013, CDOT installed 31 miles of new or restriped facilities, including 19 miles of protected bike lanes, bringing the number of protected bike lanes installed in Chicago since Mayor Emanuel came into office in May 2011 to 49 miles. Chicago’s bikeways now total more than 207 miles, according to CDOT’s report, 2013 Bikeways – Year In Review, which was released today. “Chicago is a national leader in building new and improved cycling facilities and setting a new standard for other cities to follow,” said CDOT Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld. “We are looking forward to continuing our bikeways construction efforts this summer to make Chicago the best cycling city in America.” Bikeways achievements in 2013 include: • Chicago’s first Neighborhood Greenway on Berteau Avenue • Bicycle-friendly treatments on three bridges • Installation of 12 bike corrals • 35,000 cyclists counted in monthly biking data collection events • Installation of 300 Divvy bike-share stations In addition to installing new lanes, maintenance of existing facilities continued as well. -
