This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen CHAPTER ONE the Name of The
This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen CHAPTER ONE The name of the song is “This Lullaby.” At this point, I’ve probably heard it, oh, about a million times. Approximately. All my life I’ve been told about how my father wrote it the day I was born. He was on the road somewhere in Texas, already split from my mom. The story goes that he got word of my birth, sat down with his guitar, and just came up with it, right there in a room at a Motel 6. An hour of his time, just a few chords, two verses and a chorus. He’d been writing music all his life, but in the end it would be the only song he was known for. Even in death, my father was a one-hit wonder. Or two, I guess, if you count me. Now, the song was playing overhead as I sat in a plastic chair at the car dealership, in the first week of June. It was warm, everything was blooming, and summer was practically here. Which meant, of course, that it was time for my mother to get married again. This was her fourth time, fifth if you include my father. I chose not to. But they were, in her eyes, married—if being united in the middle of the desert by someone they’d met at a rest stop only moments before counts as married. It does to my mother. But then, she takes on husbands the way other people change their hair color: out of boredom, listlessness, or just feeling that this next one will fix everything, once and for all. -

What Happened to Goodbye Sarah Dessen Reviewed by: Anika 16 Star Teen Book Reviewer of Be the Star You Are! Charity www.bethestaryouare.org Mclean has been moving town to town ever since her parent’s divorce. At each town she has assumed different identities, wiping the slate clean every time. Mclean’s life was intact when her parents were together, but her sense of self fell apart after her mother had an affair with a famous basketball coach. And now Mclean has moved to a new town with her father. She meets and befriends new people without realizing. Like when she stumbled into Dave, the very person who could help Mclean find her true identity. What Happened to Goodbye was certainly a story about one’s identity. Dessen does an amazing job crafting a cast of characters and the relationships between them. All of which contribute to how the different characters get to know each other and form strong bonds. Dessen allows the reader to discover new things about each character every step of the way. For me especially, I enjoyed the family dynamic between Mclean and her mother. I also noticed that Sarah Dessen uses much detail to wow the readers. Despite that, there are some things readers may not enjoy. I find this story to be incredibly long and slow to build. Dessen’s attention to detail and description is great, but it was rather overwhelming in this book. Bad language, alcohol, and intimacy are present in the story. But these elements are rather minimal compared to other books. -

Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Film & TV › Features Film Reviews TV Reviews Festivals Review: Beyond Clueless A new film about the world of teenage cinema suffers from the same identity crises as its high-schooler heroes, says Jasmin Hayward Thursday 29 January 2015 Director: Charlie Lyne Starring (voiceover): Fairuza Balk Running time: 89 minutes Rating: ★★☆☆☆ In his first attempt at a documentary, blogger and Guardian columnist Charlie Lyne presents us with Beyond Clueless, an exploration into the world of teen cinema. Visually, it’s incredibly enticing. There are often five-minute montages, which, though seemingly pointless, can be forgiven due to their beautiful editing. Surprisingly, the scrapbook style chapter titles fit well, adding to the documentary’s quirky image. The music, an original score by Summer Camp, is equally as entertaining. It is soft, dreamy and melodic when it needs to be, but is also capable of being just as dramatic as any blockbuster. The whimsical voiceover of Fairuza Balk is every bit as fitting to the setting. However, sometimes her dreamlike tones clash with the more darker points, making it seem as if it’s bordering on a pastiche. The documentary’s flaws mainly lie in that it doesn’t know quite know what it wants to be. Indeed, this certainly appears to be the case in the beginning when we are given a very confusing and irrelevant introduction to the documentary by way of a study of the 1996 film The Craft. http://nouse.co.uk/2015/01/29/review-beyond-clueless Archived 11 Dec 2018 09:12:07 Nouse Web Archives Review: Beyond Clueless Page 2 of 3 Furthermore, the choice of films commented on in the documentary begs many questions. -

Contemporary British Coming-Of-Age Films (1979 to the Present)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Royal Holloway - Pure 1 Contemporary British Coming-of-Age Films (1979 to the Present) Philippa Zielfa Maslin A thesis submitted to Royal Holloway, University of London, in accordance with the requirements of a Ph.D. in the Department of Media Arts 2 Declaration of Authorship I declare that the work in this thesis was carried out in accordance with the regulations of Royal Holloway, University of London. This work is original, except where indicated by special reference in the text, and no part of the thesis has been submitted for any other academic award. Any views expressed in the thesis are those of the author. Signed: Philippa Zielfa Maslin Date: 19th January 2018 3 Abstract Locating itself in relation to existing work on youth in, primarily American, cinema, the thesis questions the analytical usefulness of conceptualising the ‘youth/teen film’ as a genre and, instead, seeks to establish the value of analysing the ‘coming-of-age film’ as a genre involving the employment of adolescent protagonists. In setting out to do so, it focuses on films which are set in Britain, made from 1979 onwards, and rarely discussed as coming-of-age films (or, indeed, youth/teen films), but which may be seen to benefit from such a critical approach. Following a survey of a range of anthropological, biological, historical, juridical, psychoanalytic, psychological and sociological approaches to adolescence, as well as scholarship on the literary precursor of the coming-of-age film, the Bildungsroman, and on the relationship between adolescence and cinema, a working definition of the coming-of- age genre is proposed. -

Disparate films from a variety of genres use different forms of popular music in different ways, however these negotiations with pop music and its cultural surroundings have one true implication: that the 'inde- pendentness' (or 'indieness') of these movies is informed, anchored and embellished by their relationships with their soundtracks and/or the representations of or posi- tioning within wider popular music subcultures.
