This examination was primarily conducted by using the content analysis research technique. The researcher selected a total of 85 newspapers spread across four different South African daily and weekend tabloid newspapers that were published during the period February to September 2008. -

AAAS 135b: GLOBAL HIP-HOP Wed 6:30-9:20 pm Mandel G03 Spring 2012 Wayne Marshall [email protected] office hours: by appointment DESCRIPTION Examining how hip-hop travels and is embraced, represented, and transformed in various locales around the world, this course approaches hip-hop as itself constituted by international flows and as a product and set of practices that circulate globally in complex ways, cast variously as American, African-American, and/or black, and recast through the cultural logics of the new spaces it enters, the soundscapes it permeates. A host of questions arise when we consider hip-hopʼs global scope and significance: What does the genre in its various forms (audio, video, sartorial, gestural) carry beyond the US? What do people bring to it in new local contexts? How are US notions of race and nation mediated by hip-hop's global reach? Why do some global (which is to say, local) hip-hop scenes fasten onto the genre's well-rehearsed focus on place, community, and righteous opposition to structural and representational forms of violence, while others appear more enamored with slick portrayals of hustler archetypes, cool machismo, and ruggedly individualist, conspicuous consumption? How can hip-hop circulate in such contradictory forms? In what ways do hip-hop scenes differ from North to South America, West to East Africa, Europe to Asia? What threads unite them? In pursuit of such questions, we will read across the emerging literature on global hip- hop as we explore the growing resources available via the internet, where websites and blogs, MySpace and YouTube and the like have facilitated a further efflorescence of international (and peer-to-peer) exchanges around hip-hop. -

Dynamics of Competition in Two-Sided Markets with Differentiated Products: a Case Study of the Radio Industry Following the Primedia/New Africa Investment Ltd Merger
Work in progress, not for citation purposes Dynamics of competition in two-sided markets with differentiated products: A case study of the radio industry following the Primedia/New Africa Investment Ltd merger Rantao Itumeleng1 Abstract The decision by the Competition Tribunal to unconditionally approve the Primedia/New Africa Investment Limited merger case (NAIL) is the subject of this paper. This study conducts an impact assessment of the Primedia/NAIL case. It does so using market definition as the first step in the assessment of competition in the Gauteng commercial radio industry. In markets with two different groups of customers, repositioning is fundamental in the assessment of anticompetitive effects post-merger. Utilizing tools identified in literature and international cases, the study adopts an ex post approach to assess competition in the Gauteng commercial radio industry. Findings indicate that in mergers that do not lead to join control, merging firms’ stations reposition away. Highveld and Kaya repositioned away from each other post-merger. Because of this dynamic nature of radio as well as the structure of the market in Gauteng, no effective competitors to Kaya and Highveld in the relevant market, Highveld and Kaya’s prices rose faster than other radio stations’ prices post-merger. At an industry level, competition also deteriorated post-merger as prices rose significantly mainly because of few sales house. These findings imply that the initial decision by the Competition Tribunal to approve the merger unconditionally may be incorrect. It employs the locally produced Yizo Yizo as a case study to explore the intertextual relationship between music and television. Yizo Yizo, a reality-based drama series, was groundbreaking in propelling the experiences of black youth onto the national agenda. In representing what can be described as ‘authentic township experiences’, the series utilizes kwaito, and to a lesser degree, hip-hop, as signifiers of township and ‘essentially’ black youth experiences. Soundtracks to the series utilize both genres and local kwaito and hip-hop artists feature as themselves. The paper adopts a discursive approach to exploring intertextuality and the ways in which meanings embedded in a television series are related to music and other secondary texts and vice versa. -

Media Development and Diversity Agency Postion Paper
T h e Medi a De vel opme nt and Div ersi ty A g e n c y The Position Paper process The Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) Position Paper was finalised taking into account public comments received in February 2001, the public hearings conducted by the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communication in March 2001, and consultations with stakeholders throughout 2001. This Position Paper contains the underlying philosophy and rationale of the MDDA, and as such represents government policy that has guided the drafting of the MDDA Bill, which will be debated in Parliament during 2002. The Executive Summary is available in all official languages on request. This Position Paper is also available on the GCIS website: http://www.gcis.gov.za page 1 "Everyone has a right to freedom of expression, which includes: (a) freedom of the press and other media, and (b) freedom to receive or impart information or ideas." From the South African Constitution, Chapter Two, Section 16 "Open debate and transparency in government and society are crucial elements of reconstruction and development. This requires an information policy which guarantees active exchange of information and opinion among all members of society…….. The democratic government must encourage the development of all tiers of media – public, community and private. However, it must seek to correct the skewed legacy of apartheid where public media were turned into instruments of National Party policy; where community media were repressed; where private media are concentrat- ed in the hands of a few monopolies, and where a few individuals from the white community determine the content of media.
