Cruel Television: TV Times MECS3004 Seminar Watch the audition of William Hung http://youtu.be/2Qkas9mlMgE Extract from Smith, R. H. (2014) The Joy of Pain, Schadenfreude and the Dark side of Human Nature. Oxford, Oxford University Press. p.113-115 ‘Since its first season in 2020, American Idol has been one of the most highly viewed shown on television. There are many reasons for its popularity. Without the opportunity to see talented performers emerge from obscurity and mature over the weeks and to enjoy the guest appearances from musical legends, it would lack the cocktail of ingredients that has made it so popular. But without the balance of viewing the humiliating as well as the uplifting, the extraordinary appeal of the show would diminish. Humiliation might be one of the worst things to experience. It renders a person’s public self in tatters, defective and inferior. People in such situations are like marks who are socially dead... How could it be pleasing to witness such social pain? One explanation may be in the social comparison implications for the viewer... any downward comparison which is partly what another person’s humiliation implies, can mix pleasure with sympathy. ..Certainly for most people, watching William Hung performing so poorly on the screen created no danger of experiencing a deflating ‘upward comparison’ with someone superior to them. On any visible dimension of comparison even the most ordinary viewers would have felt no threat to their own relative judgement of themselves. On the contrary, most people could conclude that they were better looking, more talented, more self-aware- more cool – than Hung.

New Haven karaoke bar will let you sing yourself silly Internet: Friday, August 24, 2012 Print: Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 By Alexandra Sanders, Register Staff [email protected] / Twitter: @asanders88 New Haven-- Andrew Lebwohl is opening "Karaoke Heroes" a new bar at 212 Crown Street. Peter Casolino/New Haven Register 8/21/12 NEW HAVEN — Soon you will be able to walk through a phone booth and turn into your own version of Superman before walking down into the Batcave, past red, closed-circuit phones that the commissioner can call you on — and sing. Patrons of the new karaoke bar, Karaoke Heroes, won’t be handed weapons to become vigilantes, but they will be given a microphone to become rock stars. Andrew Lebwohl, CEO and owner of Karaoke Heroes, practiced corporate bankruptcy and insurance regulatory law at Dewey and LeBeouf LLC of New York before changing careers to follow his childhood passion: karaoke. “I have been a fan of karaoke since I was 8. I have performed karaoke on four continents, and I’ve sung with a number of a capella groups. In 2011, I actually won the first round of the New York City trials for the National Karaoke Championship,” said Lebwohl. “But I had that other passion I felt like I had given up on,” he added. “I felt like I owed myself a chance to try other things while I’m still young.” Lebwohl received his MBA from the Yale School of Management and he was a fellow at the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute during the summer of 2011.

Generally, questions of fame attack put the celebrity and the PR-Media hub into the foreground. The analysis of stargazers brings up the rear. The investigation of the dynamics between ascribed and achieved celebrity, celetoids, PR strategists, media corporations and the audience may Treap enormously rich fi ndings. But it is not enough for someone to be a star, or for others to construct, glaze and wax the facade of celebrity, or for still larger numbers to be in thrall to celebrity worship syndrome, narcissistic idealization and hero worship. Celebrity culture also demands an absolute foil, a butt. The star at the pinnacle of the pyramid requires a negative force at the base to legitimate celebrity prestige and sanction levels of economic reward that would otherwise be regarded to be excessive. The star signifi es capability, decorum, glamour, intelligence and authority. The fool is an anti-star. He signifi es, among other things, incompetence, ineffectuality, indignity and weakness.

  • AABA Newsletter
AABA Newsletter WWW.AABA - BAY.COM OCTOBER 2011 President’s Column By Malcolm Yeung On Saturday October 1, I attended an extraordinary panel at my alma mater, Boalt Hall. The panel lineup consisted of luminaries from the API Legal Universe: trailblazer Dale Minami; former State Bar President Holly Fujie; LA Superior Court Judge Ralph Ongeko; US District Court, Northern District of California Judge Ed Chen; Hawaii Attorney General David Louie; and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. Besides their collective magnificence, what brought these folks together you ask? All were Boalt Hall Alumni. Five out of the six went to law school at the same time. And four out of the six were housemates in what moderator Dale Minami labelled, “The Asian American Animal House.” Yes, this is a special class, and not just because all the guys had mustaches. Having them together in one place to hear them speak about how they got to where they are now was a privilege in and of itself. What was even more stunning was learning how each of these luminaries have ascended to the top of their profession by dedicating themselves to a very simple pursuit, public service. That’s not to say that each of them have always or even presently have a career in public service. But whether in private practice, public interest, or government -- each never lost sight of an urgency to serve the greater public good in one capacity or another. After the panel, this got a number of us younger -- wait, wrong word -- “less experienced” Boalt Alumni thinking.

  • Obsessive Repulsive
Obsessive Repulsive By Will Self New Statesman, May 14, 2012 Compulsive hoarding is pretty out there, no? I mean what kind of a weirdo saves all that cardboard and bubble wrap, ties it up with string and wedges it in on top of crappy old wing chairs and fake-veneer TV cabinets stacked high with bundles of old newspapers and books, then tops the whole teetering pile off with 30-or-so cat litter trays (full), leaving the felines themselves—perhaps 40 of them—to smarm along the alleys carved through this dreck (for this is but one room of an entire semi so engorged), shitting and pissing wherever? A complete weirdo—that’s who. And these people, together with their odd pa- thology, are of increasing interest to the general population, as is evidenced by the arrival on these shores of the British version of Hoarders, a US documentary series about compulsive hoarders that has already been running over there for four sea- sons and is currently embarking on its fifth. Not that this is Brit TV’s first foray un- der the sinks of the seriously possessive—there was a standalone docco, Obsessive Compulsive Hoarder on Channel 4 back in 2011—and it may be because I’m taken by the phenomenon (a hoarder of programmes about compulsive hoarders) that it seems to me that I’ve snapped on the set on a number of other occasions only to find the camera’s lens nosing along a skirting board behind which are stuffed sheaths of old discount coupons.

POOP READING "American Idol" Is Back, and I've Got It This is honestly the first time that I realize that "'House' Covered Rules" would make a good headline for a laudatory review of by Joe Mulder the show. That took five years, for me to think of that. That's okay, though; when "Shark" (with James Woods) was on, it I love "American Idol." AABA Newsletter WWW.AABA - BAY.COM SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012 President’s Column By Emi Gusukuma AABA Thanks Former Operations Director Angela Tseng and Welcomes Holland-Parlette Associates, Inc. AABA bid adieu to the wonderful Angela Tseng, who served as AABA’s Operations Director for the past two years. Thank you for your service to AABA, Angela! We are excited to welcome Holland-Parlette, an Association Management Company, who will serve as AABA’s Operations Director. The institutionalization of the Operations Director role will allow us to centralize our records and communications, continue to grow our membership, and provide programming support to the myriad Committees. Partners’ Lunch AABA hosted its quarterly Partners’ Lunch on September 28, 2012. Baldwin Lee and the firm of Allen Matkins graciously hosted the lunch, which was attended by almost 30 partners from premier firms across the city. We decided to vary the format this quarter from a free flowing networking lunch to having a discussion topic – in this case, mentoring/ leadership – to facilitate an exchange of ideas and interaction between the partners. Minette Kwok, a partner at Minami Tamaki LLP led the discussion at the September lunch, and by all accounts, did a great job! The next lunch is slated for January 11, 2013 at the San Francisco office of Sheppard Mullin, so mark your calendars! Website Launch Our website is getting a new look! I know, some of you are saying “It’s about time,” and I have to agree. The redesigned website will have greater functionality that will allow us to: 1) learn more about our members and what they want; 2) communicate with our members more easily; 3) accept reservations and payments for events and CLEs; and 4) publicize and showcase AABA’s events and membership in a more user-friendly format.
